Description

Learn how to take a log of green wood, trim it with an axe, draw it to shape using a shave horse and a draw knife and then use the pole lathe to turn your piece into an item of your choice.

This green woodturning workshop is held in a dedicated covered, outside space in the peaceful setting of our workshop in the cottage gardens of our home on the Cambs/Norfolk border.

Our classes are one to one or for pairs (see "Pole Lathe Turning for 2 people") so you enjoy an immersive experience with the full attention of the tutor. There will be no other students in the workshop.

The origins of the pole lathe are lost in antiquity, but it is known that Vikings used them as they have been discovered in archaeological finds in York. The ancient craft of pole lathe turning petered out in England after the Second World War.

You'll learn how to make a number of items that you'll be able to take away with you at the end of the day. The day can also be tailored to meet the requirements of those who are relatively new to woodturning and wish to gain some more insight.

The full-day workshop includes refreshments throughout, all the equipment and materials and also lunch.

Couples or even parents and children can come along and experience the art of green woodturning together if you choose the "Pole Lathe Turning for 2 people" workshop!

The dates for this workshop will run from March through to the end of September.

About a week before your workshop date, we'll e-mail you again with more details about parking etc.

We also offer accommodation in the form of our Crafter's Retreat cabin (www.craftersretreat.co.uk) or we can advise of other local B&Bs.

What's Included

Refreshments will be provided throughout the day, and a light, rustic farmhouse-style lunch is also included - tailored to meet all dietary requirements. Depending on the weather/time of year, lunch can be taken either out in the cottage garden or in our country kitchen which has a view over the garden.

The sessions are hands-on, and the student will be able to use the green woodworking equipment and pole lathe to create their pieces. The tuition can be tuned to what they would like to do, as people tend to learn quicker working in areas that they are interested in. They can choose from a number of items that would be suitable for beginners or those relatively new to the art.

The aim is to make an item or items that they can feel proud of and take away with them. All students will be provided with a certificate of completion. All of the wood used is from sustainable local sources.

The 1-day workshop includes:

- All tools, materials and personal protection equipment (eye protection/lung protection).

- Smocks and old shirts, but the student may wish to bring their own. If they already have some woodturning tools, they could bring these along too if they wish.

- Refreshments (tea/coffee/soft drinks) and a light, rustic farmhouse-style lunch - catering to all dietary requirements.

- One-to-one tuition/private tuition ensuring the student gets the maximum benefit from the day with no distractions.

- All work can be taken home.

- Certificate of completion.

- Detailed course notes for those who wish to pursue the craft.

- Follow-up advice.

About Blended Monkey

Blended Monkey
Blended Monkey
Wisbech
Blended Monkey was founded by husband and wife team, Simon and Louise Taggart, whose woodturning and pottery studios are based in a small village on the Norfolk/Cambridgeshire border, where the surroundings and changing seasons provide ample inspiration for some of the designs and ideas that can be found in their pieces.

"Our Blended Monkey gardens provide ample inspiration for our work, and is the perfect setting for woodturning & pottery courses. Louise (ceramicist) - I studied at the Falmouth School of Art & Design and I am interested in various art forms, design and applied arts. Simon (woodturner) - I have been teaching woodturning for many years and I love working with wood & exploring its versatility." - Louise & Simon

They offer half- and full-day 1-2-1 or pairs experiences, including their unique "2 Crafts in 1 Day" workshops where the students gets to explore woodturning in the morning and then pottery in the afternoon.
All workshops include refreshments; the full-day workshops also provide lunch - catering to all requirements and allergies.

Simon and Louise are keen supporters of and fundraisers for the Mind charity, and the past few years have seen Simon and Louise focus their efforts on offering creative therapy workshops to provide rehabilitation and therapy for people of all ages who are suffering with brain trauma, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. They are also increasingly seeing students who are coping with poor mental health (depression, anxiety, PTSD …) often resulting from stressful jobs which take their toll physically & psychologically.

The regular practice of any art or craft is incredibly beneficial in the treatment of those with poor mental health or who are rehabilitating after a brain trauma. Simon and Louise have seen amazing results in some of their students who come to them regularly to create with wood & clay. They work together with care associations, council departments & individuals to tailor their half- or full-day workshops to suit the individual needs of the student. They really enjoy sharing their woodturning and ceramics expertise and their lovely environment to contribute towards the rehabilitation and therapies of people in need.
