Description

This mini-course is part of the larger Words Have Power course series, Introduction to Contemporary Gothic Literature, and allows access to the course materials and live seminar on Gothic Recycling in What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher and "The Fall of the House of Usher" by Edgar Allan Poe. In this session we begin to identify what the Gothic is, and the way it reuses the tropes and stories of its own history to tell new stories for the current times.

Pitched at the level of a first-year or foundation undergraduate university/Bachelor's module, this course is suitable for people who enjoy reading Gothic fiction, writers of the Gothic or horror, or anyone who would like a taste of developing the skills gained through a higher education English Literature course. You will have access to two pre-recorded lectures, a live two-hour seminar, and the course Discord server for this text.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need a qualification in English to take the course?

Absolutely not. We welcome anyone with an interest in reading or writing in English.

  • How much time commitment do I need to do the course?

The course is delivered through pre-recorded lectures and live online seminars. The lectures can be watched at any time, although there are two per text, and we recommend watching them before the seminar on that text. The two-hour seminars will be run every fortnight, so you have two weeks to read each book (plus a little extra if you start as soon as you get the course list).

  • I can't make the dates of the course seminars. Will you run this course again in future?

We very much hope this will be the first course of many, so if you can't make the dates given, chances are it will run again. Contact Vicky at info@vickybrewstereditor.com to suggest days/times for future courses. You can also access the course simply as self-guided learning. Please subscribe to our Substack to find out more information on how to do this as it becomes available.

  • Who is running the course?

This course is run by Dr Vicky Brewster. Vicky is an English literature academic and fiction editor. They completed their Ph.D. at Swansea University, researching hauntings in 21st-century fiction. They have also been published widely on the topics of hyper-contemporary fiction, Gothic, and horror, particularly in the award-nominated collection Gothic Nostalgia (2023), LIT: Literature Interpretation Theory journal, and Future Folk Horror (2023). Vicky has also worked as an editor since 2018 and counts among their clients traditionally published authors, prize-nominated authors, and Amazon bestsellers. They have been running writing and editing workshops throughout their editing career, and they are really looking forward to blending literary theory with creative practice in the Words Have Power course series.

  • I have accessibility needs -- can I still do the course?

The answer is almost certainly yes, but we are constantly learning how we can be more accessible. Please drop us an email at info@vickybrewstereditor.com to discuss your needs.

  • Is this course only available in the UK?

At the moment, I can only offer the interactive courses in the UK. This is because Cademy, who are my service provider, can only provide courses to the UK, and also because I'm currently the only teacher and I'm not able to work to other people's time zones. However, please subscribe to the Substack for updates on our plans to release the course as self-guided study.
