A full day learning basic pattern drafting methods as used in industry, aimed at anyone wanting to learn how to develop basic blocks from scratch.
This course is open to anyone, not just teachers.
For Teachers: Excellent for teaching at KS3/4/5 - and great for A level students wanting to make their own garments. The course looks at methods and systems used in industry and how to correctly measure the body; create a basic block and practice some adaptions involved in pattern development.

What is special about the Simple Pattern Drafting Skills Course?
This face-to-face course is an experience that delivers textiles and fashion skills, knowledge and understanding. It is a great learning environment which allows you to gain new skills and techniques, showing how these can be incorporated in lesson plans and delivered in a fun, inspiring and engaging way. You can ask questions direct to the course developer/leader, practice skills, create classroom resources and network with other teachers.
Julia Burrows studied fashion design and garment construction at the Faculty of Clothing Design in Durban South Africa. She started her career a designing pattern cutter of men’s and ladies’ leisurewear. Julia moved on to become Senior Designer which also involved running several sample and pattern cutting rooms. She designed men’s and ladies surf and swimwear ranges, a menswear brand range “Rifle” and set up her own ladies’ wear shop and production unit, before moving to the UK.
In Britain, Julia worked for a Marks and Spencer supplier as Senior Designer of woman's lingerie and nightwear and also oversaw a children's nightwear range. Later she moved to London to become Head Designer for a men’s, ladies’ and children’s leisurewear range.
Julia now works as a freelancer, she has worked with small start-ups advising on the industry, design feasibility, fabric and pattern cuts. In 2016 she moved into teaching post 16 adult education as senor tutor, teaching Pattern Cutting and Design at The Fashion Technology Academy in London. She continues to work freelance and is developing courses and leading workshops with Textiles Skills Centre.
DAWN FOXALL
Dawn Foxall has 35 years’ experience in the textiles and garment industry including design consultant, schools presenter and resources developer for EMTEX; Fashion lecturer and programme developer at various UK Universities and FE colleges; course presenter for D&T Association, Key Stage Developments (KSD), SFE and other course providers.
She was also a co-founder of Liv.co.uk, where she managed design, buying and sourcing from Fairtrade, organic suppliers in India and Egypt. She has since worked with brands such as LUSH Soaps and Weleda, sourcing ethical products and consulting for young designers and start-ups. In 2017 she launched her own knitwear brand FOXOLOGY designing and producing sustainably sourced collections.
In 2015 Dawn set up the Textiles Skills Centre (formerly ‘Academy’) supporting textile teachers, delivering workshops and events. She continues to teach pattern cutting at various education and commercial establishments, as well as for Textiles Skills Centre and also drafts patterns and consults for industry.

All of the Textile Skills Centre events are ticket only and payable IN ADVANCE. The Textiles Skills Centre uses Cademy to automate the bookings via credit card and cheque/BACS. When you book you will receive by email a booking confirmation only. If you book by selecting 'Pay By Cheque/Invoice' you will receive an automated invoice to pay against. If you need further assistance with payment then please contact us by email or phone.
