Decaying Structures in Knitting

Decaying Structures in Knitting is an experimental knitting workshop, exploring ways to create holes and open surfaces using simple hand knitting techniques.  Exploiting the properties of the fibre, the session will also look at creating eroded surfaces using both heat and chemicals methods.

• Creating loose structures with large needles
• Making patterns and random holes using casting on and off techniques
• Using a heat gun to produce an eroded surface on synthetic materials
• Applying devoré paste to knitting to create both textural and colour effects

There will be demonstrations of knitting and yarn making techniques, plus a worksheet, PowerPoint presentation and samples to inspire further ideas after the session.

All levels of ability are welcome. The workshop is aimed at anyone with an interest in textiles or mixed media sculpture, wishing to explore the artistic potential of knitting. The emphasis is on creating experimental samples, rather than a finished piece.

Materials and equipment: -

• Yarn, any conventional knitting yarn
• Knitting needles or crochet hooks, to match the size of your yarn, plus larger or jumbo sized needles if you have them.
• Scissors, for cutting yarns
• Large eyed sewing needle
• Internet access, with a microphone and webcam. Please only book is you are able to attend in real time.
