Description

Some children feel the instant freedom and release of school once they have been deregistered. They demonstrate this with a relaxed demeanour, the tension leaving their body, a smile on their face, and maybe even laughter and light conversation. Their eating habits change for the better, they start taking interest in what they wear, making comments about the things they read and watch, and asking to see friends, go to the cinema, or take the dog for a walk. For some children the visible difference is heart-warming and a confirmation that the right choice has been made and that from this point on, things are going to be better.

This isn’t the case for all children though. For some children, they continue to live under the cloud of their school experience. The removal of school doesn’t provide the instant relief that parents were hoping for and gives little reassurance that things will change or that Home Education is the answer. Parents can be left with a child who is equally disengaged with the world as they were disengaged from school.

The difference is that now there is the possibility for recovery and there is the possibility for making things better for the child. Even if these things haven’t happened as a direct result of deregistering and they need support through the process. Parents now have a unique opportunity to truly listen to their child. Now they can be supported through this period of time towards something more suited to their needs.

Dr Naomi Fisher, clinical psychologist and home educating parent to two Self Directed Learners, and Heidi Steel, qualified teacher and parent to four always unschooled learners, share their professional and personal knowledge and experience about the process of recovery, what it truly looks like, and how you can support your children through it.

Two further webinars are available addressing this process one focusing on teenagers and the other taking a look at how parents can recover too.
