The AQA GCSE English Language consists of two paper-based and spoken language assessments.

Paper 1

• Topics covered: Reading (literature fiction text) and writing (descriptive or narrative writing)
• Exam duration: 1 Hour 45 minutes written exam
• Marks: 80
• Weight: 50% of GCSE
• Question type: Short question, long question and extended writing question

Paper 2

• Topics covered: Reading (nonfiction text and literature fiction text) and writing (present a viewpoint)
• Exam duration: 1 Hour 45 minutes written exam
• Marks: 80
• Weight: 50% of GCSE
• Question type: Short question, long question and extended writing question

Non-examination Assessment: Spoken Language

• The purpose of the assessment is to provide students with a chance to demonstrate their speaking and listening skills.
• Skills tested: Presenting, responding to questions and feedback, and use of Standard English
• Marks: Marked by the teacher
• Weight: separate endorsement (0% weighting of GCSE)
