Description

What’s stopping you living the life you want?

You’re here because you have a goal you’d like to achieve… but something keeps stopping you. When you try to take steps towards your goal unhelpful thoughts and feelings show up. And they stop you from taking the action needed to build the life you want.

You wish you could get rid of those unpleasant thoughts and feelings so they didn’t get in your way.

Unfortunately, us humans don’t have ‘off’ switches. Have you ever felt worried and someone said something like, “Don’t worry, it might never happen”?

Did that fix it? Were you able to control your worrying? Maybe you could distract yourself for a while, but what about later? What about when you were left alone with your thoughts, could you get rid of them then?

I’m guessing not.

What if your thoughts and feelings weren’t the problem?

When you try and force yourself to ‘think positively’ or somehow stop feeling bad, it doesn’t work. Instead you layer on a load of new difficult thoughts and feelings, like:

  • What’s wrong with me?

  • Other people do it, why can’t I?

  • I need to be more positive… have more will power… have more self-control.

The thing is, it’s not the thoughts and feelings themselves that are the problem. It’s that you get caught up in them. They hook and reel you in. And so, you find yourself doing unhelpful things. Things like self-sabotaging behaviours, exhausting yourself going round in circles, or avoiding doing the things that could make your life better.

With all that going on in your head, it’s not surprising you find it hard to focus on creating the life you want.

So what can you do about it?

You can’t control what happens to you. You can’t control your thoughts and feelings, no matter how much you’d like to. But you can control how you respond to what shows up. And that’s what I can help you with.

You can learn skills to help you unhook from these thoughts and feelings, so they don’t hold you back from building the life you want. When you create distance between you and your thoughts, you can respond to them in a more productive way. In a way that makes your life better. You will be able to do more of the things that truly matter to you – take action towards your goals, and create a rich and fulfilling life.

If you’re feeling…
  • Weighed down by fear

  • Unsure how to move forward

  • Like you’ll get ‘found out’ (that crippling imposter syndrome)

  • Like you’re not good enough or don’t have what it takes

  • You constantly compare yourself to others

  • Distracted and overwhelmed

I can help you…
  • Create a life that is meaningful

  • Find clarity and focus about your future

  • Step out of your comfort zone

  • Increase your resilience in challenging situations

  • Speak to yourself with kindness

  • Be more present in your life and with those you love.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Acceptance and Commitment Coaching

My coaching and training is based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a psychological behavioural therapy approach, with over 20 years of empirical research. ACT is now being recommended to help people who have diagnosed mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, OCD, and trauma. ACT is increasingly being used within the NHS and in private practice by a variety of health professionals.

Having seen the benefits of ACT in my own life I now use it with people, who may not have a mental illness, but still experience stress, worry, burn out, cravings, self-esteem and problems with motivation and self-sabotaging behaviour (which is probably all of us). It is also helping increase performance and wellbeing in sport, business, the arts, healthcare and emergency services.

The main goal of ACT is to increase mental flexibility (your ability to respond flexibly to life’s challenges) helping you be more resilient, productive and reduce the struggle with your thoughts and feelings. Essentially to ‘get out of your head’ so you can focus on the things that really matter in your life. Learning and practicing ACT tools and techniques allows you to reduce the impact difficult thoughts and feelings have on your behaviour and to increase your ability to choose how to respond in challenging situations.

But we are not just going to work on your thoughts and feelings, the ones that are holding you back. We will also work together to help you set goals and take action, after all that’s why you’re here. We will work on those thoughts and feelings so you are then able to choose how you want to respond to them, so you can change your behaviour and take the action you want. ACT can help you prioritise the stuff that is truly important in your life, help you make decisions, inspire, guide and motivate you to take action and create a more fulfilling life.

  • What about Positive Thinking?

I know what you’re thinking, there are other coaches that say,

“if you just think positive, keep in a positive frame of mind, you can have everything you want”.

Well, in the long run, how has that worked for you? To some degree, and in some areas of your life, positive thinking may work. If I need to run up a hill or have the confidence to stand up and do a presentation in front of hundreds of people, then positive thinking does work for me. But, for the deep-down stuff, for the thoughts and feelings that reoccur again and again, I’m afraid it doesn’t even scratch the surface.

That’s the great thing about my coaching, we can use positive thinking techniques where it works for you and use ACT tools when it doesn’t. Afterall, you are probably here because you’ve tried positive thinking and it hasn’t worked. In ACT you will be learning a new skill, another tool to add to your toolbox.

  • What are your qualifications and experience?

Coaching is currently an unregulated profession, which essentially means anyone can call themselves ‘a coach’. So, how do you know your coach is properly qualified? There are organisations such as The Association of Coaching who will only take members that can show evidence of a particular level of training from a registered coach training school. The requirements to join the Association require schools to follow strict guidelines to ensure the quality of their training, you cannot simply download an online course! I completed my coach training with one of the best coach training providers in the UK, where I achieved a Distinction Grade (the highest grade you can get!).
