One day, having left their jobs at Lloyds of London and a travel company to train at the world-renowned London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, Boo and Jon were reflecting on the challenges common to both worlds and came to the realisation that the business world had a lot to learn from the theatre and vice-versa. Combining their skills and experience from both worlds created the perfect recipe for their first “Power of Speech” course. 20 years later, all our courses and coaches still reflect the subtle combination of these two worlds. I really enjoy teaching. The point is to discover people’s real interests, and to help them on to the next step, whatever their current starting point. To make a lot of progress in a short time is exciting for everyone around you. I trained at the Slade School of Fine Art, at London University. I have worked in many schools and colleges throughout my life, teaching on a variety of courses. These have ranged from BA Art and Design to working in a primary school. I taught in a girls college in the USA, at Southampton Institute, and at others in Hampshire and London. I have had single students who needed to develop work for art school courses and exams..Also small groups have often come here to learn techniques and work on ideas. I’ve printed textiles for the Royal Shakespeare Company and English National Opera, and experimented with ceramics. I use photography and drawing to examine and develop ideas. At the moment I am interested in print rather than painting, but it is interesting to combine the two, and see what happens. Video also has its own attraction, and I have tried out projection on moving surfaces, including people, and am still interested in taking that further.

The Carlton Football Club and La Trobe established their partnership in 2016 with a mutual commitment to enhance education and community outcomes in Melbourne’s North and give La Trobe students the opportunity to benefit from exclusive work placements across the Club. In 2019, the Carlton College of Sport was established to give greater opportunity to study a range of diploma level sports qualifications in an elite sporting environment, with a pathway to enrol into the University’s degree courses upon successful completion. The Carlton College of Sport currently offers two courses, the Diploma of Sport Coaching and Development and the Diploma of Elite Sport Business, that are accelerator pathways into further tertiary study. The course content is delivered by La Trobe University staff at a teaching space at the Carlton Football Club, effectively making the Club a campus of La Trobe University. Both diplomas are delivered in person across 3 days a week (2 days at Ikon Park, home of the Carlton Football Club, and 1 day at La Trobe University’s Bundoora campus) across 1 year of full time study. In addition to academics students also undertake a minimum of 100 hours practical placement delivered by Carlton to enhance their learning experience and ensure they have job ready CV’s by the time they graduate the program.
