The Broken Spoke is a not-for-profit social enterprise started by people who are really passionate about cycling, and we provide open workshop support, mechanics courses, cycle training, women’s and transgender people only mechanics sessions, and a hub of information for people who cycle (or really want to). We partner with local community organisations, school groups, and individuals with the goal of making people more proficient and confident in cycle maintenance and riding. Since February 2018, Broken Spoke has been registered as a Community Benefit Society with charitable objectives and we are registered with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) under number 31918R as Broken Spoke Bicycles Limited. Some history Broke Spoke was founded in June 2012. From the beginning the founders have been working closely with the Cooperative Enterprise Hub for advice and training. Thanks to their assistance and support, Broken Spoke became a fully fledged not-for-profit Industrial and Provident Society Multistakeholder Co-operative in December 2012. (Phew, that’s a mouthful…) On 10 October 2016, we updated our registration in line with the current legislation and were then called a ‘registered society under the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014’. (…not sure if that made it easier?) In 2017 we decided that the Community Benefit Society model is actually a better fit with the purpose and objectives of Broken Spoke. On 12 February 2018 we registered the amendment of our rules and thereby transitioned to being a Community Benefit Society, still registered under the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014. We are also still dedicated to adhering to the co-operative principles and are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity.

Field Breaks started out in the Autumn of 2007 to provide a selection of professionally tutored illustration workshops in the Peak District. This followed the demise of similar workshops in the area and filled a much needed gap for people wanting short affordable art breaks in botanical illustration and landscape painting. Such was the demand for this provision that over the following years the programme has been extended to include a greater selection of courses and venues, along with a growing number of specialist professional tutors. 2020 and the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic saw great challenges to all small businesses, including Field Breaks, with courses rescheduled for safer times. This was an opportunity however for founder member Sue to think seriously about her achievements, goals and ambitions, and after some deliberation decided to pass the business on to fellow artist Hazel. Along with many happy memories of running Field Breaks, Sue is enjoying the opportunity to start new projects. With the handover, Hazel decided to revitalise the old website - "I'm re-dressing the shop window while it's quiet!" Following suggestions from her peers, this also gave her the opportunity to re-think and amend the name from "Field Breaks" to "Field Breaks Art", which lends more focus under the artwork umbrella. We hope you like it! After the extended lockdown, Hazel added a new range of on-line mini workshops in the Spring of 2021, which were a lovely way to keep connected with other artists and share ideas. From July 2021 we were once again able to offer in-person workshops so the focus was to deliver quality tutor-led courses while maintaining a level of safety, including reduced class numbers to enable social distancing. In 2022 we are pleased to be able to offer another full programme of workshops in drawing, painting, botanical illustration, natural history, landscape, abstract, and mixed media including textiles and craft workshops in batik, jewellery making, lacemaking and felting. The XML Summer School is a unique event for everyone using, designing, or implementing solutions using XML and related technologies, held in Oxford, UK. The week-long event is made up of courses which range from the basics of XML to advanced topics in linked data, web design, and publishing. Faculty tutors include practitioners and academics who are at the forefront of XML and related technologies. How is the teaching structured? Each course comprises a series of small-group classes, with plenty of time for questions and discussion. Some courses also feature a hands-on component, where you’ll have the opportunity to try out the techniques you have learned, and receive feedback and support on your work. There are also panel discussions, and informal learning opportunities over meals and evening activities. What prior knowledge do I need? That depends. The Hands-on Introduction to XML course is intended for anyone who needs to work with XML and wants to learn the basics. The other courses all assume at least this basic level of knowledge, so if you’re a beginner, you’ll need to take the Hands-on Introduction before moving on to the more advanced training. The exception to this is Trends and Transients, which features lectures by guest speakers about a variety of topics on the cutting edge of XML-related technologies. Accommodation, meals, and social events are included in the fee. The venue is St Edmund Hall, one of the most historic sites at the University of Oxford, dating back to the 12th century. All the faculty and delegates stay in college and take part in the social events, so there’s lots of opportunity to discuss questions that arise after the classes.
