The fashion industry is the second most polluting industry in the world. 1 in 6 people work in the fashion industry, yet only 20% are paid above minimum wage The system isn't broken, it's working exactly how its supposed to. It's time for that narrative to change.

I am a practising and exhibiting textile artist who makes work focussing on memory, identity, loss and absence, using a variety of mixed media techniques alongside adapting traditional patchwork and embroidery processes for contemporary work. I have also been teaching textiles for many years, and enjoy developing the design aspect of projects with students, as well as teaching the more practical stitching and colouring skills. I have delivered City & Guilds to Diploma (the old Part 2) level in both Embroidery and Patchwork & Quilting. 2015 saw me complete my Masters with Distinction as well as having a gallery at Festival of Quilts. Then in 2016 I was part of the very successful unFOLD exhibition at the Knitting & Stitching Shows at Alexandra Palace and Harrogate International Centre. We repeated that experience with The Button Box exhibition at Festival of Quilts 2018. In 2019 I successfully entered work into the Vlieseline Fine Arts Textile Award at FOQ and then worked with unFOLD members to produce a group piece which was accepted into the Janome Fine Art Textiles Award in 2021. The Covid pandemic and lockdown saw me presenting one of the Community Stitch challenges for TextileArtist.org online, to 18,000 members of the community. This was a very exciting opportunity which coincided with the development of my new online courses. With a few external teaching commitments left for 2022, I have decided to concentrate on courses in Eastbourne for 2023 to enable me to get more stitching done. So if you want to work with me on one of my courses, you will need to book a Studio 11 course, or an online course.

I make heirloom quality quilts from a variety of fabrics, I love using old clothes and giving fabric a new lease of life as a beautiful and practical quilt. I've always loved colour, pattern and print and studied textile design at university in what feels like a different lifetime. Since then I've always retained an interest in design and have found my creative passion in quilting.

Thank you for visiting my site and taking the time to look at my work. I am a textile artist, living and working in York. I create a lot using wool. This covers both my large, tactile pieces of felted art created from luscious merino fibres and my smaller, sculptural knitted and crocheted items. I began my career in community arts in Lincolnshire in 2002, before deciding to move to York to study Art and Design at York St John University. Since qualifying I have enjoyed a variety of jobs and roles within the creative sector. I am now back to where my main creative passion lies though, creating my own work and running workshops and textile classes around the UK to show others how to get the most out their own creativity. my creations begin with the seed of an idea. I draw and then move onto selecting the fabrics and threads, scrutinising layout and colour, rejecting and changing, developing and refining, until I meet with completion and contentment. I’m Catherine, a Welsh textile artist, living and working from my studio in North Wales, surrounded by beautiful countryside. The creative process is very fluid, and that is what makes it exciting. I enjoy allowing the working process of developing a piece, to also inform the outcome, rejecting notions of beginning with a perfect idea of an end result in mind. It then allows me greater flexibility to change and refine and be in the moment. I also create smaller applique pieces are often more predictable, and I regularly portray bucolic landscapes, coastal and nautical, flora and fauna.

Beverley and Nigel Caleno own, run and are fully immersed in all aspects of Old Bank Studios life. We bought the Old Bank in Harwich in 2011. Having brought up and educated a family in Colchester, we were looking for a change of lifestyle and an opportunity to build on Bev’s Interior and Soft Furnishing business. Falling in love with this magnificent building and the unspoilt, faded charm of Harwich town, where beautiful architecture sits alongside maritime industry and stunning estuary views…….. we took the plunge. Bev very quickly opened her Textile Studio and it soon became clear that demand for her workshops and courses was going from strength to strength. Encouraged by this success, the decision was made to start inviting tutors from outside to deliver workshops; we were going to need more space! And so began a full restoration of the main banking hall; with it’s high ceiling, perfect light and ample space, our new Art Studio was created. As time went on a kitchen was installed in the former bank vault. Since our first Art Workshop in June 2013, we have successfully run hundreds of one day events and longer courses, attracting many of the country’s leading artists and tutors to work with us. Our reputation has spread far and wide and we regularly welcome students from the four corners of the UK, as well as further afield. On a personal level we both continue to explore and develop our own creativity and hold an annual exhibition of our work. Bev is firmly established as a Textile Artist and more recently a painter in Watercolour, whilst Nigel works in in many media, but is gaining a reputation as a Plein Air Oil Painter. We look forward to welcoming you to the Old Bank Studios very soon.

I begin to incorporate free motion embroidery into my work, this is the technique of drawing freehand with the sewing machine to illustrate an image or design. Building on my knowledge of garment construction I particularly specialise in historic stay and corsetry based garments.

We hold workshops around London, encouraging participants to mend their favourite items of clothing instead of disposing them into landfill. Our workshops aim to introduce ways of mending clothing through various textile methods in order to fix, deconstruct or customise to revive much loved pieces. We aim to inspire people to learn new, invaluable skills and reconnect with textile techniques, encouraging creativity and mindfulness when it comes to your wardrobe.
