Magnum Driver Training was founded by two former Traffic Police officers and the aim of Dave Irvine and John Hunter was to teach and promote safer driver training. Dave has retired from learner lessons although will still be involved in Advanced testing and fleet driver training. Dave and Jim have more than 40 years traffic driving experience. They are Scottish Police College Advanced Driving Certificates holders, members of the Institute of Advanced Motorists, fully qualified DSA Approved Driving Instructors and Pass Plus registered instructors. Dave is an examiners and fleet trainer with the IAM (Formally the Institute of Advanced Motorists, now IAM RoadSmart). He also holds the RoSPA Gold Diploma in Advanced Instruction and is an examiner for RoSPA. Dave also holds an IAM RoadSmart Masters Certificate in Advanced Driving with distinction and an Institute of the Motor Industry Examiners qualification. The minimum age to start learning to drive in the UK is seventeen. You will also need a Provisional Driver's Licence. There are two ways to apply for this. Provisional Licence: By Post Ask your local Post Office for a 'D1 Pack'. Complete the D1 Form and send it to the DVLA in Swansea. You will need to include a passport photo and original proof of your identity unless you have a modern 'biometric' passport (in which case you only need give your passport number). How Many Driving Lessons Will I Need? The Department of Transport carried out a survey of thousands of people who passed their practical test over a seven year period and published their findings in 2008. The average was 47 hours of driving lessons, with an average of 20 further hours practising with friends or relatives. Atlas recommend that your driving lessons are two hours long. If you intend to practice with a family member or friend please make sure that you are both aware of the law. When Do You Want Your Lessons To Take Place? At Atlas we're flexible: you decide when you would like to learn. We do recommend that you have your driving lessons at different times of day and also both during the week and at weekends. We will pick you up from your home, or we can meet you at work for a quick lunchtime lesson or for 'rush hour' practice. It's up to you. Choice of Instructors (ADIs) It's important that you feel relaxed and comfortable during your lessons and that you and your instructor 'get' each other. At Atlas we have a number of different ADIs, so we can offer you a choice of instructor in most of the areas we cover. How Soon Can I Take My Test? No-one is allowed to apply to take their Practical Driving Test without first passing a combined Theory and Hazard Perception Test (commonly referred to as 'the theory test'). Even if you drive very often you can normally expect it to be at least 6 months before you are the safest and best driver you can be. And it's a sad fact that new drivers - particularly young drivers - are far more likely to have an accident. Road Safety Charity Brake highlighted 2015 data from the DVLA and DfT which showed that, whilst new drivers from 17-19 made up only 1.5% of those licenced to drive in the UK, this age group was responsible (i.e. they were the driver) for 9% of accidents that involved serious injury or death. There are two main reasons: over-confidence and risk taking (including speeding); poor assessment of hazards. There is no official test; instead, the assessment takes the form of five to six hours extra tuition covering: Town driving Busy high streets, especially at rush hour, present many challenges. On successful completion of the course you are issued with a certificate that entitles you to a discount on your insurance premium - as much as 50%, depending on your insurer. Motorway Driving Lessons Almost all new drivers feel most nervous at the prospect of driving on the motorway. Yet, once you become familiar with them, motorways are far less stressful places to be in charge of a car than your average high street! You are travelling at high speed, but everyone is going in the same direction and there are no pedestrians or parked vehicles to worry about. Atlas' motorway lessons are specially designed for newly qualified drivers. We will give you the confidence to go on the motorway on your own by giving you in-depth tuition on: using slip roads to get on and off the motorway; reading signs and reacting in good time; understanding junctions; driving at a constant high speed; and overtaking and changing lane.

I founded Helen’s Driving School in 2009. Initially teaching on my own, I was joined by Jacqui in January 2020, due to the growing number of pupils on my books. Together we worked under the umbrella of Helen’s Driving School and strive to get all our pupils to pass first time. Since surviving all the challenges the pandemic brought, Jacqui and I decided 2022 was a good time to change the set up of the driving school into a partnership and create Top Hat Driving School. I am passionate and enthusiastic about safe and eco friendly driving, and enjoy sharing these skills with my pupils and I thoroughly enjoy meeting such a variety of people. Having lived in Bristol all my life, I have great local knowledge of both Bristol and surrounding areas, including the test areas. Lessons with me are always relaxed and friendly with a laugh or two along the way. I pride myself on my approach to teaching and I feel that with my style pupils learn quickly and successfully because they feel at ease. I have taught many nervous pupils over the years and have found the best way to overcome the fear and nerves experienced whilst learning to drive is simply to maintain a calm and relaxed atmosphere in the car at all times. It is normal to feel anxious and as I have much experience in dealing with pupils anxiety, and have many tools and techniques to help manage these feelings whilst driving. Over our lessons, I will help you build your confidence and develop your driving skills to enable you to become a safe and confident driver for life. Jacqui Barr I worked in the film and tv industry for many years, but in a complete right turn (pun intended!) decided to retrain as a driving instructor. I qualified in 2018, and absolutely love the job. Every day is different, and I look forward to spending time with my pupils who teach me just as much as I teach them. I met Helen in the Avonmouth Test Centre at the end of 2019 and thought she was brilliant. She asked whether I would be interested in driving for Helen’s Driving School and of course I lept at the chance. The pandemic hit almost immediately, and lessons ground to a halt. Weathering the storm has not been easy, but (in the main) we have come out the other side: Helen and I decided we wanted to reflect the changes we’ve been through, and so created Top Hat Driving School. In addition to becoming an instructor, in 2019 I took a further exam with the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) to become an Advanced Driver, putting a spotlight on driver safety and skills. I bring these advanced driving techniques to my teaching, as well as being assessed as a DVSA grade A instructor (Standards Check 2021). I am conscious of Climate Change and the impact driving has on the environment. Therefore I am commited to giving all my learners methods for driving in a more eco-friendly way, reducing our impact on the environment, and saving money too. I carbon offset all my annual mileage with Carbon Footprint, choose petrol over diesel, and in the not too distant future intend to go fully electric.
