By I Am In Print

LOOKING FOR: ADULT FICTION, NON-FICTION Sian Ellis-Martin joined Blake Friedmann in 2018 and is building a list of fiction and non-fiction at the agency.  With regards to fiction, Sian is looking for commercial, upmarket and accessible literary novels. She always wants to be completely absorbed by the world of the novel, to jump into the character’s life and be swept into the narrative as if she’s been there all along. She’s drawn in by compelling characters and relationships, and loves stories with a mystery or question at the heart of them. She’s open to these ideas being explored in a variety of ways, but at the moment, she’d particularly like to find an epic love story, a fun, queer rom-com with an unusual setting or pitch, and/or a sweeping family saga. She leans more towards contemporary settings but does enjoy a historical backdrop too. In non-fiction, she’s looking for narrative non-fiction, history from different perspectives and books that make complicated ideas around things like politics and literature more accessible. Her favourite type of non-fiction book is the one that makes you interested in something or someone you’d never thought you would be. She’d also love to find cookery and food books too, particularly cuisines that are less visible in the book world, or budget cooking. She’s not currently taking on YA, children’s, fantasy or science fiction projects. Sian would like you to submit a covering letter, 1 - 2 page synopsis and the first three chapters (or 5,000 words) of your manuscript in a single word document.  (In addition to the paid sessions, Sian is kindly offering one free session for low income/under-represented writers. The clients Clare represents include Perdita & Honor Cargill, Caroline Crowe, Tom Ellen, Martyn Ford, Stewart Foster, Olivia Hope, A M Howell, Polly Ho-Yen, Rachel Ip, Beth Reekles, J.P. SOLD OUT! 12th July Thérèse Coen #Agent121. Looking for: MG, YA, ADULT FICTION, NON-FICTION

5.0(1)

By I Am In Print

LOOKING FOR: MG, YA, ADULT FICTION, NON-FICTION Thérèse is a Literary and Rights Agent at Susanna Lea Associates, @SLALondon. Born and raised in Belgium, on a diet of frites and Tintin she moved to England in her late teens with her family, then stayed in London to do a History degree and Masters at University College London. Having been brought up bilingual, translation rights seemed like her logical next step. She started off in the rights department at Bloomsbury Publishing, before hopping across the square to Ed Victor’s agency, and found experiencing both the publishing and agency side of publishing incredibly valuable. She has been building her own list of authors alongside selling translation rights since early 2016, which she has hugely enjoyed; working with authors right from the book’s conception, while also experiencing the thrill of selling her own authors’ works in the UK and US as well as in translation to publishers across the globe. In terms of adult fiction, Thérèse has a huge soft spot for historical fiction, having read Early Modern History at university, but is also very much on the hunt for crime/thrillers, bookclub, high-concept love stories and literary fiction. She loves strong female characters, in particular when they go through an evolution or journey as the story progresses and gradually find that inner strength. On the children’s fiction front, Thérèse is all about finding a fresh, new voice. She loves all things funny, fantasy and adventure – across lands, time and space, and involving strong friendships and strong lead characters - and wants to be transported straight away when reading a manuscript. She likes very vivid, well-crafted and imaginative worlds, such as stories set in a toy factory or in an underwater world. Thérèse would love some more adventures set in space, mysteries, quirky characters, explorers and imaginary friends. And last, but not least, in non-fiction, history features heavily in her interests, but Thérèse would also love to see books about big ideas, culture, sociology, science, anthropology and memoir. Anything that helps expand the mind and questions or informs the way in which we view ourselves, the world and how we fit into it, all written in an engaging and accessible manner. Thérèse would like you to submit a covering letter, 1 page synopsis and the first three chapters or 5,000 words of your manuscript in a single word document. (In addition to the paid sessions, Thérèse is kindly offering one free session for low income/under-represented writers. London Writing School

london writing school

London Writing School offers online writing workshops designed to offer some inspiration, make you think about the craft of writing and carve out some time in the day to get pen to paper.  Our paid courses allow you develop an idea at your own pace. Who are the workshops for? Perhaps you want to give writing a go but aren’t sure what will happen. Maybe you used to write and want to get back to it. Or you write, but would like more structured inspiration and a practice session. The sessions are designed so that you can make the most of them whatever stage you're at.  What do we do? We usually have a warm up exercise around the theme of the workshop, do a little bit free writing, and then there’s a chance to build a more structured scene that could go on to become a short story, or even spark an idea for a novel. If you are full of ideas we hope to bring them into sharper focus, if you’re feeling a bit creatively empty we aim to fill you up and get you going again.  Do we share work? In the free sessions we don’t read out work or share it with others. Come and experiment with no judgement. About the teacher I've been shortlisted for various awards and schemes including the BBC Writers’ Room, Crime Writers Association Debut Dagger, Theatre 503 seed commissions and the Launch Pad Manuscript Competition. I write in different forms. My work has been on stage in London, audio drama 'The Grove' has thousands of downloads and my novel 'A Company of Roses' is available on Amazon. I have an MA in Screenwriting and a PGCE from Goldsmiths University where my focus was on creativity.

As humans we have an innate connection to the natural world. This connection is tied up with the deepest part of ourselves, our unconscious. The part of our self that is both illusive and difficult to define but that is bound up with our emotional and physical make up. It is also bound to the creative part of us, it’s where our ideas come from. It’s curious, then, why writers don’t talk more about their connection to nature and the natural world. It is curious because ignoring this part of our creative makeup makes the writing process all the more difficult. Not just the writing process, but the writing life and making meaning with our words. Maybe it’s time to consider a change. Get away from your daily routine, or even your surroundings, and discover a way to Reimagine, Refresh and Reboot. “Highly recommend the course for opening up fixed writing patterns and limiting thought processes, to inspire a more enjoyable writing process and make your writing richer so it is ultimately more successful” Liz Web, Author of The Daughter As a new or struggling writer, how do you know it’s time for a helping hand? Here are my reasons why you’d want to do this for yourself, your writing process and your writing life and the benefits that come with investing in The Write Wild Method: GETTING UNSTUCK YOU - Are you stuck in the middle of things? Or stuck, unable to begin? The Write Wild Method will help you gain a fresh perspective, find new ideas and insights and ultimately get you started, or unstuck so you make it to the finishing line of your writing project. WRITE COMPELLING PROSE YOUR WRITER’S VOICE – are you struggling with making meaning with your writing? Does it feel flat, unexciting, are you wondering why anyone would want to read anything you write? Would you benefit from a method that will give you the confidence to find and develop your authentic voice so you can write the words you mean to write? BATTLING WITH FEAR AND ANXIETY YOUR WRITING LIFE – did you know that the more anxious you get the less creative you can be? This is a fact, anxiety swamps the part of your brain that is responsible for creating. Anxiety kills creativity flat. There are simple techniques within The Write Wild Method that will reduce your level of anxiety so that you can begin creating, the more practice you get with these techniques, the more creative you will be able to become and the better your writing life will be. GOALESS OR DIRECTIONLESS YOUR WRITING PROCESS – are you confused about what direction you should be taking? Uncertain about which writing project you should be tackling? Do you have a clear idea but are unable to make that idea materialize? How you begin and keep going to the finish is not always about how committed you are to any one project. It can be that you have no clear direction about what the project demands or what you want from the project. The benefit of developing a writing process that works for is that you will get from start to finish in a way that satisfies your project, yourself and your reader. Within the Write Wild Method you will be able to identify what works and what doesn’t work in terms of process and get practice in making your writing process the thing that gets you reaching your goals.
