London

Welcome to Woolwich Polytechnic School for Boys, and thank you for taking the time to express your interest in us. We are a very special school that aims to serve the community, improve opportunity for our community and also reflect our community through our diverse and ambitious curriculum, as well as through our diverse staff and student bodies. We hope that you, too, feel that specialness when you visit us, a specialness that encompasses care and compassion, a genuine delight in children’s contributions and a drive towards “success for everyone”. We have a long and proud history, having educated boys for over 100 years: we have been a technical school, reported as the most improved boy’s school in the country, a community school and now an academy, a single school and now the founding ‘brother’ to our sister school, Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls. We have year-on-year exam results at GCSE and A Level that make us, our students and their families rightly proud. Yet our relentless focus is upon the futures of our current students as we counsel them through their educational careers to be the most successful version of themselves. To support your son through their secondary education, we have firm foundations in exemplary pastoral care and expert teaching. Safeguarding our students is the absolute priority that informs the behaviours we demonstrate in the staff and student bodies. Our pastoral care and personal development programme are child-centred, empathetic to individual children’s needs, recognising their challenges and assisting with overcoming them. We care; we listen; we understand context and we actively build meaningful relationships with every child. Our teaching is equally child-centred, offering support and challenge as required to ensure that all our students achieve the grades they need to pursue the courses and careers they aspire to with confidence. Our curriculum is designed so that students can make interconnections between the various subject disciplines, hence stimulating a culture of curiosity and questioning so that all our boys leave us as well-rounded, caring members of the community, ready to navigate the adult world safely, critically and knowledgeably. We also recognise that child development is enhanced through pleasure and we therefore cater for their personal interests with an extensive enrichment programme, including wellbeing days, our Activities Week, curriculum and reward trips and a variety of clubs. There are always opportunities for your son to have their voice heard, whether through the Student Council or more informal feedback to tutors, teachers and head of year or our dedicated student voice co-ordinator. I am confident that you will have made the right choice for your son by privileging us with his care, education and personal development so welcome to the Poly family.

Sheffield

Manor Training & Resource Centre (MaTReC) is a voluntary-sector training organisation. Its legal status is that of a charitable company limited by guarantee. Founded in 1987 its primary aim is to empower the local community by delivering low cost training to equip people with the skills to re-enter and/or advance within the labour market. Manor Training & Resource Centre Ltd (MaTReC), evolved from Manor Employment Project (MEP), which began life in 1979. The MEP project was set up to provide premises for small local businesses. By the mid 80s the issue of training had become increasingly important, so MaTReC was established in April 1987, with the express aim of providing local people with the opportunities to obtain skills and qualifications. We now offer training to all the peopleof Sheffield and surrounding areas. MaTReC’s main site was converted from old shops using local labour. It was opened in 1989 by Richard Caborn MP. The charity is constantly updating its programme of courses so whether its Functional Skills Maths and English, GCSE Maths or English or other courses MaTReC will help find the right course for you. We help to re-engage adults furthest away from the job market by identifying and removing barriers to learning. We teach functional basic skills including English, Maths and basic ICT. We pride ourselves in supporting adults with specific learning difficulties to reach their potential to gain confidence and self esteem.

The Yoga Den

Scotland,

For as long as I can remember I have loved movement and using my body to the full. My mum said that I never walked anywhere- I cartwheeled. Physiotherapy was on obvious career choice for me, and I qualified as a physiotherapist in 2001. I have worked as a physio in the NHS since then (aside from a few maternity leaves). I am currently on a career break from my job in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where I mainly work on the medical wards, helping to get (often older) people back on their feet after a period of illness. For all the shortcomings of the NHS, it is a wonderful organisation and one which I am proud to be a part of. I began attending yoga classes in 2005, and I immediately enjoyed the classes; the physical postures reminded me of the gymnastics I had done as a child. Although I remember being a bit mystified when the teacher kept telling us to "breathe"... I thought 'well, of course I am breathing!' It wasn't until, after a couple of years, I had a few months out of going to classes, that I noticed my mind started racing, I wasn't sleeping as well, and I realised that yoga was having a bigger impact on my whole life than I first thought. And that maybe there was something more to all this 'breathing'?! So I started taking my yoga practice a bit more seriously and I finally began training as a yoga teacher in April 2016. I live in beautiful East Lothian, Scotland, with my husband and our 5 children (the twins arrival in 2018 was a bit of a surprise to say the least!), so family life is a full-time job in itself and finding time for my own personal yoga practice can sometimes be a challenge. The last few years have been an intense period of my life, with all the demands of a large young family, and also having cared for, and lost, both of my parents within just a few years. My yoga practice is truly what keeps me grounded and balanced. It helps me to negotiate all the ripples, waves and storms of life with acceptance, clarity, strength and peace. I opened The Yoga Den, in the gorgeous and friendly village of East Linton in July 2020 - perhaps not the best year to open a new yoga studio, but we made it through covid! When I qualified as a yoga teacher, I only ever intended to teach a couple of yoga classes a week, to have my own studio feels like a bit of a crazy dream! I am so happy that other amazing teachers & therapists can join me in providing this healing space to serve the community of East Lothian, and beyond.

Kiranjot

I received my spiritual name Kiranjot after practising Kundalini Yoga for 11 years. Kiran means ray of light from the sun and jot is a vessel. I went to my first Kundalini class in 2003 while looking for ways to tackle the debilitating depression I was suffering with and realised straight away Kundalini was the cure. I started teacher training in 2004 and haven’t stopped since, taking yearly in depth trainings with masters teachers within Kundalini Yoga including Gurmukh, Guru Rattana, Guru Dev, Shiv Charan and Satya, Karta Singh and Carolyn Cowan. After the home birth of my son in 2007, I left my media career and started to attend births and teach yoga. Birth and Kundalini Yoga are both hugely transformational experiences. Essentially what I do is facilitate space for people to go deep into their process and have positive life affirming experiences whether that be in a yoga studio or on a labour ward. For many years I’ve had an interest in astrology. I’ve always taken into account the turning of the seasons and the astrological weather when I plan my yoga classes. I believe that’s why so many people say after class, “thank you, that was spot on” I live in Peckham south east London and have taught thousands of hours of regular classes in the biggest and best yoga studios and humble community centres in London and abroad. Please go to the home page for my current schedule and check out the retreats page to see what exciting yogic adventures I have coming up.
