Oak and Smoke Tannery is dedicated to Natural Tanning and Traditional Leatherwork. Oak and Smoke Tannery is made up of Jane Robertson and Jessie Watson Brown. We are two individuals with a passion for the wildness in nature and the skills that enable us to live closely to the earth. Through this journey… we discovered tanning! The tanning processes we practise use only natural ingredients – locally harvested tree barks such as Oak and Willow, oils and Smoke. We tan and sell leather, rawhide and unique leather handcrafts. The Heritage Crafts association has categorised tanning as ‘critically endangered’ as a craft because there are so few people practising it and even less teaching it. We intend to demystify the art of tanning by teaching simple methods, with simple tools. This is how we were taught and how we still practise. We learned tanning in Washington State in America and more recently from traditional tanners in Scandinavia.  We love the discovery of learning how different skins and processes work, and seeing the alchemical change that they go through during the tanning process. When we first returned from America lots of people were asking us to teach them tanning so we set up our first hide camp. The first year was small with a group of friends, and it was a booming success. Since then its grown and grown every year and now we run numerous camps every year, as well as guest teaching on other courses and offering individual tuition. All this as well as of course tanning leather ourselves on Dartmoor and in Mid Wales. We would love to see tanning become normal in peoples homes, as it once would have been. Most of the UK's domestic animal skins get exported to other countries or tanned in chemically intensive commercial tanneries, and most wild animal skins are wasted - its heart breaking! It officially began for us in 1918 after our volunteers, who were recruited into the 130th Field Ambulance, returned from France where they’d helped treat soldiers on the battlefields of the First World War. It was the hard work and dedication of those volunteers, at home and overseas, that earned Wales it’s very own St John Priory, based in Cardiff. After the war, our volunteers continued to provide first aid treatment in Cardiff and the surrounding valleys, including taking care of the war wounded and rehabilitation of returning St John Ambulance Cymru volunteers. Since then we've been there for people through some of the country’s highs and lows, from providing support at the Aberfan disaster, to being pitch-side as Wales won Grand Slams. As the need for first aid developed, so did we. The organisation set up the first Ambulance Service for Wales and in 1974 we were the first organisation to take first aid treatments and emergency response into the heart of communities, by introducing mobile treatment units - something we still do today. The tradition of delivering first aid hasn’t wavered, and while our 4,000 volunteers are no longer needed on the battlefield, they support at a different type of field – the sporting field. As proud medical cover providers for the Principality Stadium, we help keep the public safe during events – including the world’s biggest sporting event; the Champions League Finals when they came to Cardiff in 2017. A nation of lifesavers St John Ambulance Cymru believe everyone should learn basic first aid skills. Since the beginning we've trained people in first aid at work and in communities. Accessibility to first aid training was improved after we made the Preliminary Course in First Aid and Nursing available in Welsh, and in 1923 the organisation set up the first Cadet Brigade in Wales, meaning for the first time, children and young people in Wales had the opportunity to learn lifesaving skills. St John Ambulance Cymru Badger and Cadet Youth Programmes are now a staple of our work, teaching those aged 5-17 how to save a life and providing the perfect springboard for our healthcare professionals of the future. Today, we're proud to train over 30,000 people in first aid skills every year. Training everyone from school children to multi-million pound businesses, and working towards a Wales where no one dies because they needed first aid and didn’t get it.

Hi I'm Katie, the face behind Sealy MacWheely. I am a passionate spinner, knitter and lover of all things bright and colourful! Sealy MacWheely began with very humble beginnings and came into being initially whilst I was a student to raise money for the brilliant charity, Childreach International, with whom I trekked through the Andes of Peru in the summer of 2013. Once the trek to the summit of Machu Picchu was complete I simply couldn't let go of my wee business and after graduating and moving down to the outskirts of the wonderful city of Glasgow I refreshed and rebranded and began the daunting task of vending at local craft markets. It didn't take long for my business to outgrow itself and soon I was driving across the country to larger yarn and fibre festivals and events and with a little hesitation and a lot of excitement I eventually quit my regular job and took up Sealy MacWheely full time. This of course led me to my wee Yarn & Fibre Shop which would never have existed had it not been for the incredible support of our amazing yarn community. With the help of a successful Kickstarter campaign in the autumn of 2018 I was able to move into my beautiful wee shop in Kirkintilloch where I could focus all my creative energy into sharing my love of fluff and colour! I am also passionate about ecology and the environmental impact of my business has been factored into every decision I make. Both the shop and my home where I do my dyeing are powered by 100% renewable energy and I use absolutely no single use plastics in my branded products. I am proud to announce that Sealy MacWheely has recently teamed up with Ecologi, meaning that for every purchase made both in the shop and online a tree will be planted in an effort to combat the climate emergency that our planet currently faces. Although the Covid 19 pandemic has been a bumpy ride the shop has recently moved to a new premises with an in-situ dye studio and I have absolutely no intention of giving up! In fact I have so many exciting adventures lined up for the next year that I can't wait to share with you so keep your eyes peeled!
