White-water canoeing had always been a part of Viking’s programme and was especially popular when Viking embarked on its three-week expedition to the French Alps or Austria. Then one summer a member returned from university telling us about a strange five a side game to which he had been introduced called Canoe Polo. Somehow the Unit was talked into trying out the sport, and it stuck. For the following 20 years, virtually all those who represented Viking, were members of the Venture Scout Unit. Today, although retaining links to the 73rd Derby Scout group, the club is a member of the B.C.U. in its own right

Buckstone Primary School, situated on the south east of the Buckstone Estate, flanked on one side by woods and Mortonhall Golf Club, was opened on the 19 April 1977 and has become the focal point in the community. A large extension to the school was opened in January 1985. An additional class was built in the summer 2000 also the refurbishments of some classes were completed. The buildings are semi open-plan in design; all classrooms are carpeted and open out to three main multi-purpose areas. Toilet and cloakroom facilities are within the areas. There is a well equipped hall/gymnasium, a library, resource room and a music room.

NEW TEACHER TRAINING AT VALLEKILDE // Almost every fifth employee in the primary school is not qualified as a teacher, and according to an analysis by the Danish Professional Colleges, there will be a shortage of 13,000 trained teachers in seven years. "I think that universities must do everything they can to solve and contribute to societal tasks, and this is one of the important ones." This is what our principal Torben Smidt Hansen says about the new idea of training teachers at Vallekilde Højskole. From the summer of 2024, the idea is that 30 student teachers can take the first year of their education here at Vallekilde Højskole.

weaversbazaar came out of a shared passion for tapestry weaving when Matty Smith and Lin Squires met for the first time on the 2008 West Dean College Tapestry Summer School. We had both been experimenting with art, craft and cloth weaving and loved using yarns in creative ways. As we progressed through that hot summer week, weaving and talking and talking and weaving, we not only discovered many shared life experiences but also a common sense of fulfilment in the process and outcomes of tapestry weaving. However, once away from West Dean, we faced a serious challenge - how to find high-quality yarns in just the right colours needed for the tapestries we wanted to weave. After much research, a supplier of high-twist worsted yarn was found and then a dyer who was able to match-dye from just a one-inch colour sample...and at that point, we began to think about whether this would be a product and a service that other textile artists would be interested in: weaversbazaar was launched! The products and services we offer have grown in popularity: our original range of six colours have grown to over 200.The fine 18/2 yarn we started with has been complemented by two medium-weight worsted yarns (7/2 & 9.5/2). In addition, we have extended the range of yarns offered to include both dyed and undyed Nettle, Silk and Linen. We commission the manufacture of equipment that cant be found else where and a year ago took on a studio space in which we run workshops. In doing all these things have establish relationships with diverse textile artists arounfd the world and to communicate regularly with our growing community; sharing information and news that we hope both interests and informs. And our own weaving has continued to develop. Lin and Matty are both active members of the British Tapestry Group, the American Tapestry Alliance and the Canadian Tapestry Network and relish opportunities to get together with other tapestry weavers and textile artists to share ideas. Everyone who contributes to weaversbazaar is a textile maker. Matty retired from weaversbazaar in April 2020. But we continue and Rachel Hanney has joined Lin to continue to develop weaversbazaar. Our mission remains to be the place to find quality yarns and reliable, to provide a personalised service and to facilitate creativity and especially Tapestry Weaving as a contemporary art form.

Helens professional history included time working as a Senior Nurse Advisor at NHS Direct a Resuscitation Nurse Trainer in Devon and latterly as a School Matron in a private school. David has worked with Helen for several years providing support in training and assessing groups until Helen handed over the reigns in the summer of 2017. David has had a rich career in Health Care. He started in the St John Ambulance aged 12, Joined the Army as a Combat Medical Technician at 16 and trained to work in Operating Theatres a few years later. In 1992 He qualified as a Registered General Nurse working children with disabilities, elderly care, prison health care, NHS Direct and going on to qualify and practice as Specialist Community Public Health Nurse. David began his training career as an Officer with the RAF Volunteer Reserve where he maintains his affiliation with the Combined cadet force to this day. The City Cricket Academy (CCA) was established by former first class cricketer, Don Bhagawati in 2006, the Freeman’s Common premises being opened by former England skipper, Mike Gatting in 2008.Since then we have continued to develop our cricketing links and credentials, giving us an enviable reputation in cricket coaching in the UK and abroad.Our partnership with Leicester Grammar School and University of Leicester allows us to benefit from the magnificent ground and playing facilities.Leicestershire County Cricket Club uses City Cricket Academy (CCA) extensively for their own training, as part of the good working relationship we have with them.The academy’s strong cricketing links with Test playing nations give younger players access to exciting opportunities to develop their skills in different cultures via International Tours to, for example, India and Dubai.We have teams competing in the Leicestershire Youth Leagues during the summer season.We are fortunate to regularly have former Test cricketers as guest coaches and advisors to the academy, bringing insightful ideas and coaching tips to the coaching team.Underpinning all of the above is the City Cricket Academy (CCA) team’s passion and love for the game, and the genuine desire to encourage this in every single individual that comes here, by helping them be the best that they can be, whatever their potential and experience.

My interest in art was established in childhood, as I saw a need to colour in any black and white pictures in my childrens story books, then many years later the magic of selling original paintings started when I got my first red dot at Darlington Art Society Annual Exhibition in 1980. I am largely self taught but constantly experiments with colour and light, tone and composition. I paint subjects from town to country, floral to figurative, snow scenes, summer landscapes, boats, Scottish castles, still life and pets. Although I had had a long career in horticulture taking me all over the United Kingdom I became a full time artist in 1992, just as the Government began to wind up the Scottish New Towns (I was in Livingston) and redundancy loomed. I have been fairly prolific and now (up to 2020) painted over 1800 paintings. All my paintings are numbered and have dates and titles on the back of the frame as well as on the artwork. I have published several limited edition prints, and often put on an exhibition of recent paintings in my Original Art studio in Dundee.
