In his presidential address in 1920 to the Iron and Steel Institute, Dr Stead revealed that he had discussed many years earlier with Andrew Carnegie his ideas for a technical institute which would facilitate "the continual acquisition of knowledge by the staffs and workmen of the iron and steel industries". Andrew Carnegie was impressed by Dr Stead's conception and told him "he would pay for just such an institute in Middlesbrough, and equip it with the standard technological books if the directors of the industries would maintain it". Discussions took place between Dr Stead and individual ironmasters who, while approving the scheme, would not act without further consideration. Andrew Carnegie died so his offer was no longer available. It is to the credit of the ironmasters that in spite of this they responded to the vision and enthusiasm of Dr Stead and the Cleveland Technical Institute was born. After many years of patient perseverance and hard work the Cleveland Technical Institute opened on 22nd September 1921. By then Dr Stead's health was failing but he became the Institute's first president, a position which brought him deep satisfaction. Iron and steel, shipbuilding and engineering were the basic traditional industries of the Cleveland area and it was to the leaders in these industries that Dr Stead made his first approaches. A joint Committee representing the Cleveland Institute of Engineers and the North-East Coast Institute of Engineers and Shipbuilders was formed and held its first meeting on 5th January 1919, in the Cleveland Club, Middlesbrough. Members of the Joint Committee were: Cleveland Institute of Engineers - Dr JE Stead, JH Harrison, RH Archer-Coulson and RE Cowell. NE Coast Engineers and Shipbuilders - EL Ord, E Hall-Brown, Harald Dixon, EH Fraser-Smith and GM Harroway.

Principal Consultant and Founder - Simon Barnard Simon BarnardSimon has more than thirty years experience teaching and consulting in Innovation, New Product Development and Quality Improvement. An Electronics engineer by training, he spent his early career working on automotive and aerospace control systems for Lucas Research. In 1987 he was trained by Shin Taguchi(of ASI) in Taguchi Methods and was subsequently involved in its implementation within Lucas. He took the opportunity to bring Taguchi Methods to a wider audience by joining ASI in 1989 and quickly expanded his training portfolio into QFD and other Continuous Improvement areas. In 1996 he was trained by TRIZ Master Victor Fey and more recently successfully achieved MATRIZ level 3 certification, following extensive coaching by TRIZ Master Sergei Ikovenko. With colleague Ray Greenall they built up a successful Six Sigma training business that was taken over by BSI Management Systems in 2006. Simon left BSI in 2007 to establish SCB Associates Ltd. The Chamberlain School of English is a small English family business that has been offering language trips for students (13-17 years old) to Eastbourne on the south coast of England during the school holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia (Easter/Summer) since 1984. During a language trip with us, the students can learn English at the same time as spending a wonderful holiday: specific English lessons in the morning, a varied leisure and entertainment program in the afternoon and evening, trips to London and Brighton and accommodation with English families - extensive language holidays at a fixed all-inclusive price. Thanks to our many years of experience, we know what makes a successful language trip for students. During each language trip there is always only one group. Since we have a limited number of students for each course, we get to know the children within a very short time and the students also quickly make new friends. Our very carefully selected host families for the language trip mostly live near the school or can be reached quickly by bus. The families are nice, open-minded and take good care of our students. We have a great English team of supervisors who are involved in all language travel activities and excursions. This also gives the students plenty of opportunity to use and improve their English in their free time. The teachers are experienced and adapt their lessons to the needs of the students. The small classes make it possible to support the students individually and to respond to the language difficulties of each individual. Our school building , Gildredge Manor , is a beautiful old manor house ideally situated in a lovely park setting close to the town centre. Not only the lessons take place here. We also host our entertainment afternoons and evenings here. Gildredge Manor isn't just home for our language study trips - we live here too, so our door is always open to our students.

Island Riding Centre has 5* equestrian facilities and accommodation and a welcoming team to ensure that your riding experience and holidays are unforgettable. We opened in July 2017; we are a fully insured, licensed equestrian centre, ABRS accredited livery yard and horse riding stables with an indoor 60m x 25m sand school and an outdoor 60m x 40m sand school. We are a Pony Club Centre and are members of the Association of British Riding Schools. We are an RDA Accessibility Mark centre and have the island’s only para hoist, and a Changing Places Toilet cubicle – we passionately believe that riding should be accessible to all. Onsite we have a cafe, restaurant and children’s playground, we are an award winning holiday complex based on the Isle of Wight (a couple of miles off the south coast of England) with self catering cottages and safari tents. The Isle of Wight has a strong tradition of horse riding with hundreds of miles of bridleways, glorious beaches and trails with spectacular views. Tapping in to the Island’s popularity as a tourist destination, owners Paul and Louise decided on an equestrian complex combined with self-catering holiday accommodation, which would cater for everyone. Suitable for riders (and non-riders) both young and old, those with limited physical abilities, novice riders to experts we hope it will not only provide recreational fun, but also help development and – who knows – find the potential riding stars for the future! Aunty Social is a community arts organisation that gives people opportunities to develop their creativity, learn new skills and connect with others through positive arty activities. We coordinate a diverse programme of arts and cultural activities designed to bring people together in a safe, supportive, gentle space. What about the future? Well, we’re keen to build on everything we’ve achieved. We’re looking to employ staff to help us with our new venue and with office work – hey, if we can do all of this in our free time on evenings and weekends, imagine what we could achieve if we had some help! All in all, we want to continue offering the people of the Fylde Coast even more great things to do. We want to share and make great art in our local communities so we can all enjoy all the social benefits. A little history We started out back in 2011 as a group of friends who wanted something fun, affordable and social to do. There were very few ways to meet new people that didn’t involve going to a pub or a bar. So we raided our attics, scoured our wardrobes and went off to a car boot sale to raise £30 for our very first workshop. Since then, we’ve done all manner of lovely activities and reaching thousands of local people. We’ve received funding from a variety of sources such as Arts Council England, Blackpool Council, BFI, Richmond Fellowship, Leftcoast, Street to Scale and EU Youth Initiatives but this is not the majority of our income. We really believe in sustainability and work hard to earn our own income through workshop delivery, research and creative retail sales; making sure that projects can pay for themselves or each-other. Fast forward to 2022 and we now have a variety of projects on the go as well as online arts and culture magazine Blackpool Social Club and the Winter Gardens Film Festival. We’re still completely volunteer-run and led; we are super proud of all our helpers who help us put on events and activities to a professional standard.

PETA was founded in 1970 by Alex Zemenides who, at the time, was Managing Director of component manufacturing company Sealectro. At the time, Zemenides felt there was a lack of training and development opportunities for his staff in the local area. Training that could be tailored to his staff and business, that met industry and commercial standards and that didn’t have to work around a rigid syllabus or programme. Together with five other local businesses, he created the Portsmouth Engineering Training Association – PETA – that was based in Southsea, Portsmouth. The combined vision of this group was to establish an organisation, controlled by local business, that would be free from external influences to concentrate on the training and development of people employed, or about to be employed, in industry and commerce. As such, PETA was set up to be (and still is) a registered charity, directed by an executive council of leaders elected from our member base. There are no shareholders at PETA, only stakeholders. We operate on a self-financing basis and are non-profit making, which means all our funds are reinvested into the services and training we deliver. Whilst our heritage is in engineering, today, PETA offers over 200 courses and apprenticeship programmes in the most sought after professional, digital and technical skillsets – from management training to health and safety qualifications, IT skills and engineering. Today, PETA is one of the largest and most respected training providers on the south coast and we will continue to build on this reputation, transforming careers and building the next generation of business leaders and technical experts.
