For over 120 years, MRS Training & Rescue (formerly known as Mines Rescue Service), has developed specialist skills, experience and knowledge gained from working in difficult and potentially dangerous environments, to effect the rescue and escape of mine workers from underground. However, given the gradual decline of the coal mines over many years, culminating in the closure of the last deep coal mine in December 2015, we have been able to expand and diversify to meet the needs of today’s health and safety market. We have been able to secure long term success by leveraging our expertise, and have branched out from underground mining into providing unique rescue services, specialist equipment (some of which has been designed using practical expertise gathered on the job), consultancy and a comprehensive range of accredited health and safety related products, training and services to a wide range of industries, including nuclear, aerospace, manufacturing and utilities. Training and assessing customers' employees to safely enter, work and exit from confined spaces, is offered at all of our eight training centres, and can also be delivered at customers’ premises by using our mobile rigs. We have been involved with industry in developing the National Occupational Standards, and all the confined space suite of qualifications awarded by City & Guilds are available at our accredited training centres. We have also developed bespoke courses for specific industries such as the water industry.

The institution's original buildings were the first in the country to be purpose-built for the professional training of teachers. The first cohort of 10 male student teachers had been taught in temporary premises in Nicholas Street from February 1840, until increasing student numbers led to a move to further temporary accommodation in Bridge Street later that year. The need for a permanent site led the Dean and Chapter of Chester Cathedral to donate land adjacent to Parkgate Road and the new facilities were opened in 1842 for the 50 student teachers and their school pupils. The Parkgate Road Campus has subsequently been developed to accommodate the needs of students and the University still provides higher education in this location and at other sites in the city and beyond. Education qualifications remain significant and are now a fraction of the 420 course combinations on offer. In the 20th Century, the institution steadily expanded its student numbers and the variety and nature of its courses, which range from Animation to Zoo Management. The University of Chester now has over 1,700 staff and some 20,000 students, drawn from the United Kingdom, Europe and further afield, particularly from the United States, India, China, Nigeria, Turkey, Uganda, Pakistan, Ghana, Bangladesh, Qatar, Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. As well as undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, a new range of foundation degrees and apprenticeship degrees combines conventional university study with learning at work. MPhil and PhD qualifications are an established and growing area of activity, with the University gaining the powers to award its own research degrees in 2007. I’ve worked for more than 30 years delivering and managing services in the public sector to support disabled people. In 1997 I moved into higher education becoming the manager of the disability service at the University of the West of England in Bristol. After UWE, I was the manager of an educational development project in Manchester before two roles in national coordination teams. As part of the National Disability Team I oversaw £2.1m of HEFCE funding across 23 projects in a range of HEIs in England. The projects were funded to set up disability provision from scratch within small specialist institutions and to develop a range of inclusive teaching, learning and assessment resources for the sector. I was then senior policy adviser at Action on Access, the national coordination team for widening participation. I’ve worked in a consultancy capacity and been a member of policy groups for a range of projects and organisations including, the Institute of Physics, the Higher Education Academy, the General Teaching Council for England, the Quality Assurance Agency, and a number of universities including York, Durham, Huddersfield, Middlesex and Cardiff Metropolitan. I was a member of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Disability Practitioners for a number of years and I’m now the CEO of the International Network of Inclusive Practice. I recently worked as a visiting lecturer at the Education University, Hong Kong and currently work as a lecturer at London South Bank University.
