I am a freelance designer-maker, applied artist, crafts-woman, whatever you want to call me – I stitch stuff by hand; fabric, metal, porcelain, leather, vitreous enamel.. . My work is various, it depends whether I am working for myself, to commission or collaborating with other artists. But whatever I do is slow to make; detailed hand stitching in any material whether in silk, linen, wool or wire takes time, consequently my work is also slow to evolve. I decided to show on this site what I do, who I am work with, how I work and also how I think. I want to show the work behind HER WORK not just the finished things. The journey from the first idea, searching, researching, drawing, sampling and eventually making the finished piece. You will be able to watch my work progress, or not; maybe by seeing this record people will come to value making that is manufactured by hand, heart and eye. In May 2010 I developed – Heart Space Studios ( from my yoga practice “Put your Hands in your Heart Space”) and for 5 years it was a space in Bristol England for all things textile. The activities at the studios can still be viewed – I closed the studio workshops in 2015 – the classes remain on this site as part of the blog, they contain many of my most popular posts….. Heart Space Studios continues as a group of makers who develop projects primarily for publishing companies. Most notably we work with designer Kaffe Fassett in the production of his patchwork quilt books and other fabrics.

Needles and Sparkles

For as long as I can remember there has always been thread in some form or another in my life. Be it stitching embroidery kits,a french knitting dolly or even hooking a rug when I was a child. I formalized my threadiness with a three year apprenticeship at The Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace, receiving the best training in all aspects of hand embroidery. From goldwork to bothsides alike with canvas work, stumpwork, beadwork, jacobean and many other wonderful techniques thrown in for good measure. Upon completing my apprenticeship I went to work for Jimmy Choo couture and the Jim Henson Company. I also have had the privilege to be responsible for pieces for the likes of Prince Charles, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Sultan and Sultana of Pehang, The Sultan of Brunei, the AA, Acorn Designs Ltd, Adidas, , Barbara Clark, Barbara Windsor, Ben de Lisi, Bruce Oldfield, The Beckhams, Catherine Walker, Chanticleer, Clemonts Ribeino, Colefax and Fowler, Dame Edna Everage, Dizzy Rascal, Estelle, Hardy Aimes, Irish Rugby Union, Jasper Conran, Jenny Dyer, John Lobb Ltd, Julia Taylor, Kevin Arpino, Kylie Minogue, Lady Sovereign, Lipsy, Lennox Lewis, Lesley Cutler, Marion Thomas, Miss Dynamite, Robinson and Valentine, Sassi Holford, Sharon Bowen, Sharon Cunningham, Sharon Osborne, Shirin Cashmere, Steven Hakes, So Solid Crew, Thomas Pinks, Tristan Webber, Turnball and Asser, Ulrich Engler, Victoria Bain, also theater productions such as An Inspector Calls, Lion King, Miss Saigon and Romeo and Juliet amongst others. In 2009 I had the honor of being asked to work for The Royal Household at Buckingham Palace. I worked there for nearly five years and had the pleasure to work on many prestigious outfits for Her Majesty and Her Family.

Offering in person Embroidery and other needle craft courses and workshops in Cumbria.  Also available online. I learned to sew and embroider at a very young age, with skills passed down through generations of Irish Grandmothers.  These skills have been honed with training from some of the worlds' leading embroidery schools such as Hand and Lock and the Royal School of Needlework in London. With over 25 years of experience, I own and operate the Maire Curtis Lakeland Studio and accept bespoke commissions from all over the world for individuals and couture designers. Growing up and living in the stunning Cumbrian Lake District provides an endless source of inspiration and when I am not stitching or designing, I am to be found up to my elbows in dirt in the garden or drawing and painting. Whilst face to face workshops prove very popular, I am now offering courses and workshops online to a wider audience.  This also allows people to learn at their own pace in the comfort of their home. Now that our courses are hosted directly via the Cademy website, you have instant access to dip in and out as you choose any time you want. COURSE FEATURES All of our courses feature in depth tuition with professional hints and tips supported by images and videos.  You also have direct tutor support for six months from registration.  Contact information will be provided in the course notes.
