Richmond North Yorkshire

Being the best we can be.The students who join us have the potential to do great things. With inspirational teachers who go above and beyond, our students are supported and challenged to be the best they can be. Our students have respect for themselves, each other, their teachers and their school and leave us well prepared to face the world as confident, caring, independent and resilient young people. What is it like to start my own business or to sing in a theatre? I love science, I’d love to learn how to canoe and abseil? The answer to all these questions can be found at Richmond. Our students experience life at work, perform on stage and embark on local and international expeditions with teachers leading these events who share their interests and wish to develop them. On visiting, there’s an immediate sense that it is more than just a school, it’s a community within a community and students, visitors, parents and staff often comment on the special buzz they feel when they are here. It’s hard to pinpoint, but it’s a combination of many factors that unite to make this such a special place. Dedicated teachers, fabulous facilities, a wonderful heritage, a sense of belonging and incredible students, are just some of the elements that make Richmond School and Sixth Form College such a special place to learn. We were very proud to be awarded the 2021 School of the Year in the Northern Echo Education Awards, in recognition of the many brilliant facets of the school and the community it serves.

Please help us to break the cycle of poverty that entraps children and prevents them from becoming productive members of society. Children don’t choose to be born into poverty. Most grow up never realizing their human potential. Instead, they face physical and psychological trauma—hunger, malnutrition, disease, low self-esteem and lack of opportunity. Christel House is much more than a school. We give children a hand-up, not a handout, by providing a rigorous academic education supported by programmes to develop the whole child. We don’t just educate, or feed, or provide health care—we do all of these things from early childhood through early adulthood. And we continue to mentor our students for 5+ years after they graduate from Christel House. The results? Christel House works! Since 2001 in India and South Africa we have impacted the lives of over 2,300 children, their families and communities. In India, fewer than 10% of all children ever get to college. In South Africa, 52% of young people cannot find work. Approximately 86% of graduates from our schools in these countries are now working, in apprenticeships, or continuing their studies full or part-time at college or university. Their futures are secure, their ambitions realised. Welcome to The Spires College, an 11-18 secondary school with both a comprehensive intake and a selective intake. I am incredibly proud to be the Principal of The Spires College and am privileged to work with such a dedicated team of staff and with so many wonderful young people. Our aim is simple: to make certain that every young person achieves their true potential. We prioritise a love of learning. Our curriculum is focused on the teaching of rich, valuable knowledge and on the skills required to make effective use of this knowledge. Our teachers are passionate about their subjects and enjoy sharing their expertise with the children they teach, as well as using their pedagogical knowledge in the classroom to ensure that children learn effectively. At The Spires College we believe that the ability to read with understanding, judiciousness and confidence is one of the most valuable skills anyone can have and so we devote significant time and resources to developing these capabilities. We also value all aspects of education in its broadest sense. Our students are encouraged to engage with as many opportunities beyond the classroom as possible. This includes a very wide range of extra-curricular clubs, teams, competitions and visits but our students also take an active role in shaping the future of the College through a wide range of student leadership activities. This website gives you a flavour of what our College has to offer but please do come and visit us to find out more about what makes the College such a special place.

Alternative Curriculum Education

We currently work to support secondary schools, colleges, private care organisations and pupil referral units and offer both an academic and vocational programme of activities for young people not accessing mainstream education for whatever reason. We can offer students up to a three day programme or a combination of days (up to a maximum of 18 hours per week) to suit your requirements. We can also cater for small groups (4-6 students) and can offer a bespoke programme of activities on either a short term or long term basis. Students can be placed 'on and off' the programme as required and can start the programme as soon as we receive a completed referral and consent/medical form. We liaise closely with the referral agency and the parents/guardian regarding attendance, behaviour and achievement throughout the students placement at A.C.E. and provide daily attendance registers to each referral agency. Student trackers and reports are sent termly and are also available on request by other professionals involved with a young person placed with us. Alternative Curriculum Education was founded over 20 years ago in 2000 by the Directors Marie Carrick & Leslie Carrick. Since then they have built up a team of reputable Tutors and Support Workers and helped over 1000 students achieve the grades they require to secure places at college and thus advance their learning. The centre was awarded the Alternative Education Probation Certificate from Cambridgeshire County Council in January 2020 as well as various other awards over the years.
