Cherwell College Oxford

Oxford

CHERWELL COLLEGE OXFORD is located in the heart of Oxford. The College is a leading independent, co-educational, boarding and day school for students aged between 12 and 18 years of age. Cherwell is one of the few colleges focused on bespoke education. Cherwell is one of the few remaining pre-university colleges in Oxford which continue to preserve the very best the British education system has to offer – the tutorial. In an age of continuing uncertainty, young people must be encouraged to ‘think on their feet’ and adapt quickly to the ever-changing political, economic and social situations in the world, which have a direct impact on their lives and academic and career aspirations. Cherwell’s adaptability and bespoke approach to education, delivered via a quintessentially Oxbridge tutorial method of teaching (one-to-one tuition & small group seminars), assists the College in nurturing and developing the individual student’s potential to the full. The format of tuition is discussed at an interview stage and determined by the subject syllabus and the specific needs of the student. This combination of small group and individual tuition ensures comprehensive syllabus coverage, enhanced by student feedback and classroom discussion, while enabling each student to fully understand each topic, and to apply this understanding effectively under examination conditions. Regular progress tests and mock examinations feature in the timetable, particularly important to those students where examination results do not always reflect their true academic potential. Monthly reports, written by each subject tutor, allow parents to closely monitor academic and pastoral progress.

Redthread

Delivered by leading charities tackling youth violence, Catch22 and Redthread, The Social Switch Project is switching the narrative on how social media’s relationship to youth violence is understood, tackled and solved. How the project was formed The Social Switch Project launched when Google.org was seeking a way to tackle the growing issue of antisocial and violent online behaviour, which often leads to violence offline. Where antisocial behaviour was once mostly limited to a physical audience, harmful content is now rapidly shared online, resulting in retaliation and feeding gang violence. This programme contributes to the public health approach to tackling youth violence. Utilising funding from the corporate sector, Catch22 and Redthread are able to offer these learning opportunities for London’s young people and professionals. Who is involved? Initially funded by Google.org, two of London’s leading charities Catch22 and Redthread, launched the pilot project in 2019. Catch22’s extensive research in the area and frontline experience of reducing violence, is combined with Redthread’s expertise in delivering youth violence interventions. Google.org encouraged both partners to use their knowledge to create an exemplary pilot project.  The Mayor of London’s Violence Reduction Unit is now supporting the next phase of the project to build our impact and shape its future development. The Social Switch Project has a large advisory board, with representatives from across the sector, police, and academics. We’re already working with key players, including Google, Facebook, TikTok, City Hall, the Metropolitan Police, and The Children’s Society.

Mark’s Story Mark had huge problems at school. He had little social skills to be able to cope with learning and as a result was unfocussed and behaved aggressively. He was at real risk of exclusion. The team at The HIVE encouraged his involvement in Croydon Children’s University™. Mark has been a success story, wanting to come to the activities, wanting to learn and build up his points. Both school and his parent’s say Mark’s participation in Croydon Children’s University™ has made a huge difference to both his behaviour and the way he is now able to cope with all that life throws at him. With inspirational teachers who go above and beyond, our students are supported and challenged to be the best they can be. Our students have respect for themselves, each other, their teachers and their school and leave us well prepared to face the world as confident, caring, independent and resilient young people. What is it like to start my own business or to sing in a theatre? I love science, I’d love to learn how to canoe and abseil? The answer to all these questions can be found at Richmond. Our students experience life at work, perform on stage and embark on local and international expeditions with teachers leading these events who share their interests and wish to develop them. On visiting, there’s an immediate sense that it is more than just a school, it’s a community within a community and students, visitors, parents and staff often comment on the special buzz they feel when they are here. It’s hard to pinpoint, but it’s a combination of many factors that unite to make this such a special place. Dedicated teachers, fabulous facilities, a wonderful heritage, a sense of belonging and incredible students, are just some of the elements that make Richmond School and Sixth Form College such a special place to learn.
