Welcome to our website where I hope that you enjoy it and find what you are looking for. I am honoured and privileged to be the Head Teacher of Newbattle High School. I am proud to be leading such a great school where our vision and values are centred on supporting all young people to exceed beyond their potential. This is reflected in our school motto “Challenge” and our hashtag “AIMHIGHER”. The school’s ethos is ambitious, inclusive and supportive. Based within our Community Campus, working together for better outcomes is a priority and I see this every day in action where we know, and are proud of, our students. We are well supported by our parents/carers, community and partners both in and outside of school. A few aspects of our vision which sets us apart. All students are strongly encouraged to stay on until the end of S6 with correct courses to suit every young adult. These range from Advanced Higher, Work Based Learning, College Delivery onsite, Wider SCQF courses etc. We have an overwhelmingly nurturing ethos here where every student counts. This can be seen through our extensive and unique pastoral structure staffed with our Mental Wellbeing Nurse, Teacher of Wellbeing, Nurture staff, Outreach Teacher, Pupil Care and Welfare Officers and our fully funded Positive Learning. These important roles complement our House and Support for Learning teams. We are a Centre of Excellence Digitally with resources, partners, learning pedagogy etc to ensure that our pupils are advantaged digitally. We have learner pathways for career, College or University and have engaged Higher Education (Edinburgh University being a pivotal partner), Further Education (Edinburgh College being a pivotal partner) and Businesses as partners in the totality of our curriculum and school.

Research is an essential part of what we do in Trinity. We are driven by a passion for research and scholarship. Our research has a fundamental influence on our teaching. Research, along with teaching, forms our identity. Research is one of the factors that makes Trinity the leading university in Ireland and a university of international standing. The research we do here in Trinity is diverse and rich. We take pride in being research active across all three of our faculties - Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences; Engineering, Maths & Science; and Health Sciences. The Trinity Campaign is built around the theme Inspiring Generations, a theme that is very apt for research as our work looks to understand the past as well as build the future. Our Research Charter provides a context for how we work. The Charter is the result of a highly consultative process that engaged people from different disciplines and divisions across Trinity. The Charter is our public commitment to the values that underpin our research. We also warmly embrace the principles set out in the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment. One of the seven principles in our Charter is ‘Standing Up for Research’. This is especially important in today’s world. We need to ensure that the neutral voice of the expert researcher is taken seriously, that research continues to be resourced, and that research continues to matter. To that end, #researchMATTERS is our research magazine and our way of sharing some of the many research stories that are part of work and life in Trinity. Our vision is to engage in research with the quality, intensity, depth, diversity, and openness that leads to fundamental breakthroughs, new understandings, key insights, and that can make translational and transformative advances.

I am a mindfulness and yoga teacher with over 15 years’ experience working in facilitation, personal development, training design and delivery, coaching and wellbeing. I teach yoga, mindfulness and stress management techniques to help people thrive, especially when life is complex and demanding. My passion is helping people live happy and fulfilling lives, do what they love, and make a difference in the world. We all face challenges in a fast-paced world. I work to create moments of stillness and connection that allow you space to breathe and just be. From this place you are free to think clearly and get your life working in the way you want. Whether working with individuals, groups or corporate clients, compassion is at the heart of what I do. I believe that self-care can be a radical act that transforms our relationship to the world and our place within it, through nurture, rest and deep healing. I know that profound change can happen kindly, through thoughtful enquiry and values-based action. My work is grounded in the integrity of many years of personal practice, study and experience. This in turn supports the values-driven foundation for my work in social and educational inclusion, with a particular focus on equality and inclusion in higher education. I also have experience in facilitating learning across a wide range of settings including schools, universities and workplaces. Picture My current interests are positive psychology; mindfulness based approaches; stress and resilience; creativity; nature connection; and the power of play. I have trained as a mindfulness teacher with the Centre for Mindfulness Research at Bangor University and the Oxford Mindfulness Centre at the University of Oxford, and follow the UK Mindfulness Network Good Practice Guidelines.

ActiveHistory.co.uk is the work of Russel Tarr. I am Head of History at the International School of Toulouse. Prior to this I worked at Wolverhampton Grammar School. I have a degreee in Modern History from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University. I am also a fully-qualified teacher with a PGCE from the School of Education at Birmingham University. What is ActiveHistory.co.uk? ActiveHistory.co.uk (est. 1998) provides interactive simulations, decision-making games, self-marking quizzes, worksheets and lesson plans for teachers and students of World History. It provides materials on scores of topics from the Middle Ages to the present day, aimed at every age range between 11-18 years. It provides a highly effective means of teaching history using all the benefits of modern internet technology. ActiveHistory is a practical, continually evolving resource produced by a full-time history teacher for his students and his colleagues. All of the top activities have been produced with the classroom in mind, and are continually amended after being tried out in class by myself and other visitors. As a result the site has earned some glowing testimonials from its loyal subscribers and praise from newspapers such as the Sunday Times and the New York Times. Roger Frost in The Sunday Times wrote, "To see teaching creativity bubble onto the internet, and regain any lost joy for school, take a trip to Active History. Pick your year and topic, and discover an enjoyable, intensely hands-on learning environment...The exercises are witty, irreverent and often brilliant". Becky Hewlitt, writing the Times Educational Supplement, was of the opinion that, "If the Queen taught history then Russel Tarr would be a knight of the realm. His superb site has saved me thousands of hours of planning and is a constant source of innovative and exciting ideas."
