Blackburne House, formerly the Women’s Technology and Education Centre (WTEC), was established in 1983 with the aim of progressing women from disadvantaged backgrounds into employment within technical professions – an area in which, at the time, women were significantly under-represented. The organisation grew quickly and considerably and, in 1991, moved into new premises in Liverpool’s famous Georgian Quarter. More than £4m was raised in order to breathe new life back into Blackburne House and the beautiful, Grade II-listed building became our new home. Today, Blackburne House is a vibrant and thriving organisation and one of the country’s leading education centres for women – but we wouldn’t have experienced the growth we have without the help of our partner organisations. Over the years, we have established a number of successful social enterprises that succeed in supporting our educational aims and provide tangible examples of how new markets can be used to serve local communities. Attracting thousands of visitors each year, our facilities now include a thriving bistro, health spa, conference and events facilities and a 30-place nursery. HISTORY OF THE BULDING Blackburne House is a stunning Grade II-listed building, situated on Hope Street in Liverpool’s famous Georgian Quarter. Hope Street was voted Britain’s Best Street in 2012 and it’s little wonder; it’s a strikingly beautiful area, boasting two cathedrals and some of the best restaurants in town, not to mention a lively arts scene and independent retailers. The building has a deep-rooted history in providing education to women and girls – dating as far back as the mid-1800s as the first girl's school in the country – with some well-known faces passing through its doors, including former MP Edwina Currie, actress Tina Malone and journalist Gillian Reynolds, who was awarded an MBE in 1999 for her services to broadcasting. The Liverpool Institute High School for Girls, as Blackburne House was formerly known, closed its doors in 1986 and the building remained unused until 1992. We reopened the doors to a totally transformed Blackburne House in 1994, following an extensive programme of regeneration. Today, the building retains much of its original charm, whilst a suite of new facilities ensure it is comfortable and accessible for students and visitors alike. We are currently undergoing a planned refurbishment programme of the building to ensure its continuation of purpose, reduced environmental impacts and to future-proof it for the student and visitors of the future. We are home to a wide range of social businesses including The School for Social Entrepreneurs, Blackburne House Bistro, Blackburne House Nursery, The Health Place, and Blackburne House Conferencing and Events – all of which create social value for the wider community. All of our profits enable us to deliver outstanding educational and economic opportunities for women from across the city who view Blackburne House as a safe place to access learning and personal development. Feedback from our learners and customers has proven that, by offering a range of educational opportunities, women across the city go on to access higher education and employment, becoming role models for their family and friends. Blackburne House is key to the economic activity of many women and this can only be achieved as our social enterprises generate income and opportunities.

The company was founded in June 2011 by Buzz Bury, Sharon Phillips and Steve Burns after several months of discussions and business planning. The idea had been spurred on by significant cuts to public spending and the shift in emphasis for young people and community services to the development of social enterprise. Think Forward C.I.C. was created as the vehicle to provide services which benefit the local community, particularly young people and community groups.  The Team Steve Burns Steve has enjoyed a wonderful and challenging career in education for the last 22 years spanning the voluntary sector, social services, youth & community work, further education, and working with young people excluded from mainstream schools. His experience includes four years within a managerial position in a pupil referral unit in Blackpool. Steve is committed to life-long learning and has so far undertaken a MEd in special education, a post-graduate diploma in youth & community work and certificates in counselling, careers guidance, life-coaching and a Master Practitioner qualification in NLP. Buzz Bury Buzz is a qualified Youth and Community Worker with more than 28 years of experience ranging from club and issue-based work to management and staff development. He has significant experience in project management, particularly specialising in supporting art and creatively based activities and is an established and valued European Youth Work Trainer within the “Youth in Action” programme of the European Union. He has demonstrated innovative training delivery in the fields of “Youth Participation” and “Global Citizenship” as well as supporting international volunteer initiatives. Sharon Phillips Sharon has 16 years of experience working in services for young people, both in career guidance and in a leadership role for Integrated Youth Services provision. In her previous role at Blackpool Council she was the strategic and operational lead for training, development & accreditation for Blackpool Young People’s Services. Being passionately committed to youth workforce development, she is enjoying being back at the coal face delivering training and in her spare time (ha ha) is in the middle of studying for her Masters Degree in Youth and Community Work.

In this digital age there is more competition for our attention than ever before. This has a knock on impact on our lives as where we place our attention determines what we experience and how we feel... I, Alex La Via, was inspired to set up Live More Offline after noticing the impact of digital technology in my work and home life. Digital wellness is about using technology in a way that brings us closer to the things and people we value rather than being distracted away from our goals. Examples of unhelpful digital habits can be the extra episode of Netflix which leaves us feeling tired the next day, digital notifications that get in the way of focused work or scrolling time away yet feeling we don't have the time for the things we love. I am passionate about helping people to create a relationship with technology that is on their terms and creates the life they want! Alex La Via The Live More Offline approach is rooted in the evidence base of mindfulness and neuroscience. Drawing on research emerging on the impact of digital technology on focus, memory, creativity, empathy, wellbeing and sleep, to name just a few areas. I have experienced the 'always on' culture first-hand, within my corporate career, and understand the challenges of managing the blurred line between work and home life. In addition, I noticed my greatest challenge with technology on relocating to Yorkshire in early 2018 and being between jobs. At this time, I started spending more time on social media and Netflix. After noticing the impact on my life, I took the bold decision to disconnect from digital technology by flying to Spain and walking 500 miles on the Camino de Santiago. Spending six weeks walking in nature and disconnecting from digital technology, I felt energised, healthy and inspired. This led me to question how to get the right balance back at home. From this moment, I have undertaken academic research and furthered my training into the impact that digital technology is having on wellbeing and creating the lives we want. I now bring this combination of personal experience and knowledge to empower others to find a balance with digital technology which supports their goals and the life they want to live. It would be a pleasure to help you in creating meaningful change to meet your needs and goals.
