Urban Tango Nights is an Argentine Tango club based in Swansea, South Wales, UK Our aim is to promote all forms of tango from Canyengue to Fusion, Salon to Nuevo, Alternative to Experimental and generally have fun along the way. As Tango is widely considered to be a social dance we believe that enjoyment should be first and foremost. We actively encourage experimentation and the development of personal style as well as understanding the history of the dance. We believe there are no rules in Tango (except general good manners). We do not encourage the use of the cabaceo, but instead encourage people to talk to each other as you would in any other social dance. We also encourage women to ask men to dance. Tango can be danced to any music and we find this allows for full expression of the freedom of the art form and we do not usually use tandas or cortinas. We also believe that there is no such thing as beginners or advanced dancers in tango there is only those who know how to do a step and therefore need to practice and develop that step, and those who need to learn the step.

Canolfan Maerdy is the Anchor Organisation for the Upper Amman Valley and provides a multifunction community hub, with excellent services, meeting the needs of the community as part of a collaborative effort to regenerate our once vibrant local economy. Its work is focused on the Upper Amman Valley with links and engagement into Carmarthenshire and the Upper Swansea Valley as appropriate. Canolfan Maerdy has a skilled and committed Board of Trustees, employs 22 staff, supported by the work of over 30 committed volunteers to deliver services. Canolfan Maerdy came into being in 2009 as the successor to Amman Valley Enterprise, which had been active in the community for the preceding 20 years. Canolfan Maerdy as a community focused and led organisation and has long been a pathfinder organisation, identifying new needs in the community and developing services, often with others, to meet those needs. A prime example of such a service would be general interest, adult learning courses and clubs now often provided free by volunteers at the library or at very subsidised rates by Carmarthenshire at the Black Mountain and Glanamman Centres. The focus is on working in a complimentary manner with other organisations and agencies, identifying any gaps in services and facilitating development to meet needs as they become apparent.

Ffynone House began life as St Winifrede’s Convent School in the latter part of the 19th Century. Pupils were taught by nuns of the Ursuline Order, who still retain a presence at Stella Maris Convent close by. Part of the school suffered bomb damage during the Second World War and a photograph of the bombed science laboratory can be seen at Swansea Museum. The Convent continued to provide education for boys and girls after the war, and in 1964, a new block was constructed with a purpose built hall, classrooms and laboratories. However, the opening of Bishop Vaughan Catholic School in 1966 enabled a larger number of students to be accommodated, and in 1969 the convent school closed. Today, reminders of the St Winifred’s can be seen in the stained glass window in the entrance hall, the old school crest in the refectory, and the cross on the front façade.

Located at University of Wales, Swansea, which overlooks the majestic panorama of Swansea Bay, all participants will be spoilt for choice both in the realm of music and holidaying options on offer. As in any learning situation, the bottom line rests with the quality of the faculty, and in this case, it is as good as it gets anywhere in the world. Each member of the faculty is internationally renowned, not only for their musical and performance expertise but also their social skills, a consequence of a regular diet of globe-trotting, performing and conducting master-classes to people of all ages and abilities. It was famously said of the Artistic Director, Dr. Nicholas Childs, that if he had played the cello rather than the euphonium, his name would have been Rostropovich. He is now perhaps more widely known as Artistic Director of the world-famous Black Dyke Band. Meanwhile, the instrumental tutors represent the cream of Britain’s incredibly talented core of brilliant instrumentalists: the incredible Tom Hutchinson from The Cory Band, Daniel Thomas, Richard Marshall and Brett Baker from Black Dyke, Freelance soloist Owen Farr and Gary Curtin from the Fodens Band. Under their expert tutelage you will be given the opportunity to explore new repertoire, meet new friends and generally have a fantastic time. For those applicants who possess an overwhelming desire to seriously improve their all-round playing skills and musical understanding, then, without doubt, they have chosen wisely, for the fixed intention is to provide them with a learning experience of a lifetime, whilst still allowing time and space for holiday fun. If the aim is to balance a general improvement in overall playing standards with making new like-minded friends, whilst enjoying a little more time in the sun amidst great surroundings, then look no further. In short, everyone enrolled in the summer course will be able to design a great banding holiday with precisely as much music making as is desired. The International Brass Band Summer School also caters for non-participating and non-residential visitors. For those who want to brush up on their brass band skills whilst their partners soak up the sun in a sublime environment, rest assured, this will resemble Christmas in the summer.
