As a team of highly experienced practitioners we offer comprehensive support for children, young people and adults. For educational environments we support with concerns relating to behaviour, identify needs and aid learning and development. In addition we can enhance staff skills through highly effective training and organisational development. We also work directly for families who need help and guidance on Special Educational Needs as well as supporting children with a range of individual emotional, learning and behavioural difficulties. I have over 20 years' experience (BSC (Hons) Sociology & Communication Studies) regarding intervention and prevention of vulnerable families in the UK. I trained as a Domestic Violence Crisis Counselor in New York and then progressed to train in London as a qualified mediator. I quickly became involved in community development; running large outreach programmes entitled "Life's Better Together". This included homework and art clubs, summer sports camps in local schools with volunteers and in partnership with Wandsworth Teenage Pregnancy Unit to provide short, sharp, intensive training for teenage mothers. I then moved into the youth offending world, coordinating Youth Inclusion Projects (YIP) with large staff teams providing outreach services to excluded young people and then strategic and operational co-ordination of Lambeth Youth Council.

DYT’s mission is to help young people who struggle with reading, writing and language. This group of learners consistently underperform in literacy because of underlying difficulties that are not responsive to standard educational approaches, and may require targeted intervention, either in class or in a small group or individual setting. We advocate for the use of evidence-based practice and pride ourselves on having a team of experts who have both current knowledge and experience of working in schools alongside teachers and teaching assistants in both primary and secondary settings. We have developed our approach to collaborating with schools around our own Literacy Difficulties Framework, which acts as both a position statement and guidance on recommended practice. We organize meetings and social and community events with a view to decreasing social isolation and promoting diversity in the community. We also organise a varied schedule of events for the wider community during Black History Month. Our mentoring schemes introduce Young People to careers in the creative and food industries, while our outreach work has included collaboration and meetings with local schools, hate crime organisations, youth schemes and Sutton United. Kaleidoscope (available online and in hard copy format) is our fledgling magazine which gives a regular overview of our charity initiatives, together with articles on African, Caribbean and British culture, politics, history, and sport, with a view to giving writers of all social backgrounds a voice on their topics of interest.

At the heart of the community in Derbyshire since 1847YMCA Derbyshire is an independent Christian charity committed to helping young people. Regardless of gender, race, ability or faith, we provide a variety of support, particularly at times of need. We are also registered social landlord and company limited by guarantee. Formed as Derby YMCA in 1847, our head office (known as The Campus) moved to the current location on London Road in Wilmorton in 1967. Derby YMCA became YMCA Derbyshire in 2004 to reflect our growing activities across the county. We now operate as a charity across Derbyshire – in Derby, Chesterfield, Ilkeston. In the near future, we aim to further expand our reach within the county. We are affiliated to the National and international YMCA Movement.

Julian House offers services to clients with differing levels of need, these include homeless services, accomodation and our hostel on Manvers streetJulian House is a charity that supports vulnerable and at-risk individuals. These include adults and young people experiencing homelessness, escaping domestic abuse, adults with learning difficulties and people who need support after leaving prison. “Every year, we support over 1,800 vulnerable individuals.” We operate more than 40 different projects, accommodation sites and social enterprises across South West England. These include our homeless outreach services, a 20-bed emergency access hostel, various support. We also run multiple training programmes (including at our bike workshops in Bath and Trowbridge) to help people regain confidence, learn new transferable work skills, get back into education, volunteering and employment.

Community Motors CIC was a social enterprise, set up in 2014 by Elaine and Justin Cooper as a Community Interest Company, to meet two specific aims: To provide excellent motor vehicle services to the local community and to provide opportunities for young and disadvantaged people to train in useful vocational skills, in particular motor vehicle mechanics. We saw and wanted to address the career challenges of young people who are not ‘academic’, are probably not suited for University, and who are currently not well served by an education system which is primarily measured by – and hence values - academic results over practical and personal development. Therefore, starting from an empty industrial unit, and joined by Mark and Kevin, our Garage and Training Managers, we built an enterprise from scratch which aimed to deliver practical and ethical excellence in all we did. We provided clear and consistent services and advice to our customers and alongside that offered young people the chance to gain real-world experience and accredited training in a professional working environment, working and learning alongside motivated, talented motor vehicle technicians, many of whom had overcome their own struggles when growing up. We worked hard to run and build the organisation as well as we could, building relationships with local schools, colleges and pupil referral units, as well as many, many members of the community around us, who came to trust us with the safety and reliability of their vehicles. We won both local and national awards for the quality of our enterprise, and many positive reviews and testimonials from happy customers and trainees.

Holistically, we also support family sessions alongside the children, in parallel workshops called The Parenthood Academy: Self development for parents, as well as exploring strategies on progressive parenting for the millennials. The multi award-winning Manhood Academy for Boys was birthed by 8 men who shared a single vision. Following a trip to Gambia by 4 of the co-founders of Manhood Academy, in February 2016 a community call out brought them together in the same room, meeting at an Ethiopian restaurant in South London. At the end of the round table meeting they unanimously chose to “Be the change we wish to see in the world” by collectively establishing The Manhood Academy.Each founder previously holding a distinguished track record in youth work, from a BAFA award winning senior educator to working on the streets of London with urban youth. The Manhood Academy officially launched to the community at Park View Academy, London on October 15th, 2016.A curriculum was co-designed from the collective wealth of experience of the founders, and the nameManhood Academy, Womanhood Academy & Parenthood Academy were coined. Established under the umbrella (CIC) community interest company name: Lifehood Academy on 15 May 2017. The Manhood Academy program was implemented with the intention of exposing our young people to character building experiences, tests and master classes.All geared towards shifting young people’s paradigm, from the chronic news headlines, school disenfranchisement and stereotypes some of our young people manifest as a self-fulfilling prophecy. Bringing about a new and empowering context, supporting the our youth to take responsibility for decisions that will set the course for a positive future.
