Masterful use of shape can take your work to new heights, add vitality and energy to your work with improvised free cut shapes is the goal of this workshop. Exercises will focus on sharpening your awareness of the role shape can play in your work. Ideas will be developed by using fused fabric studies. Fabric compositions will be developed using piecing and raw edge fused collage. Learn to use shape and colour confidently by fusing, appliqueing, piecing or stitching them to add movement and direction to your work. Working with a variety of shapes you will learn how to add a new graphic quality by stitching or overlapping colour to make an individual free-form composition.  You may choose to work by hand or machine or both.

I really wanted to use all my creative skills, skills I’d had for many years but never had time to use any more, and skills I realised I could and wanted to pass on. I also wanted to work for myself, I wanted to be able to work around my children. And I am doing all of that now, and am loving it. I get to be surrounded by like minded people, great fabrics, my kids and cats, and listen to music all day. I get to decide what I do every day and how I do it.

I can teach you a large range of skills from cutting accurately with a rotary cutter, sewing a straight line, (harder than it sounds) Applique, English paper piecing, following a patchwork pattern, putting a quilt together and free motion quilting. What you learn is up to you. I usually work in 3 hour sessions as there is a lot to take in and practice.

my creations begin with the seed of an idea. I draw and then move onto selecting the fabrics and threads, scrutinising layout and colour, rejecting and changing, developing and refining, until I meet with completion and contentment. I’m Catherine, a Welsh textile artist, living and working from my studio in North Wales, surrounded by beautiful countryside. The creative process is very fluid, and that is what makes it exciting. I enjoy allowing the working process of developing a piece, to also inform the outcome, rejecting notions of beginning with a perfect idea of an end result in mind. It then allows me greater flexibility to change and refine and be in the moment. I also create smaller applique pieces are often more predictable, and I regularly portray bucolic landscapes, coastal and nautical, flora and fauna.

Maggi and Sarah created two projects to engage teenagers during the summer holidays, encouraging creativity and the development of new skills. The pack included a hard-backed sketchbook with a workbook of suggested art based activities, also Derwent Arts kindly donated some drawing equipment. The second project included a fully illustrated instruction booklet, coordinated fabrics, ribbons, needles and threads to create a decorative length of bunting, which could be customised with applique lettering or imagery. The scope of these projects could reach beyond the original pack and the summer holiday period, inspiring children to consider further individual projects. The quality of the pack and its learning materials encourages young people to work independently and the workbooks encouraged recipients to explore their own personal projects. The packs also contain Crafts Council project ideas to inspire children and teenagers, and support material for those who may wish to embark on the Arts Awards scheme. ‘Recreate Make’ intend to develop an Arts Award offering in the near future. With the help of the West Cumbria Learning Centre, Maggi and Sarah were able to distribute projects to 38 young people across West Cumbria who it was felt would find them beneficial. We gave the packs out during the summer holiday of 2021 to help additional homeschooling ideas for the arts. They were given to children from Wigton to Whitehaven, the majority centred around the Workington area.
