HBTC (Hull Business Training Centre) was founded by Judith Dolman-Williams and Margaret Wingfield in 1994. At this time the world was a very different place. The use of mobile phones was extremely rare. The internet had been created but not many people had heard of it. A small band called Oasis released their debut album. The TV show ‘Friends’ first aired and Forrest Gump was the top grossing film of the year. Initially HBTC was based out of small office on Coelus Street, Hull. We carried out training for employers on our premises, across Hull and the East Riding. Within just a couple of months, the office on Coelus Street proved to be too small, as the business grew rapidly. So we relocated to an office block within Chamberlain Business Centre on Chamberlain Road, Hull. Initially we rented just a couple of rooms in this large block. But HBTC went from strength to strength, and added further rooms to our lease, as other businesses moved out. By the late 1990s, HBTC proudly occupied the full block. We secured our first apprenticeship training contract in 1996. Which has become the main focus of the business. The main areas were, and still remain, business, IT and teaching. In late 2001, an exciting opportunity arose to expand our already successful Job Centre Plus contract. This saw HBTC move our unemployed provision to the city centre. We decided to move all of our operations to one location on Spyvee Street at the end of 2004. In more recent years we have expanded our provision to the south of the Humber. Opening our Grimsby office in 2011 and our Scunthorpe office in 2013. Enabling us to cover Hull and East Yorkshire, Northern Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire. In 2015 we moved to the city centre at Charlotte Street Mews. Where we are still currently located. Not far from the New Theatre and Queens Gardens. In the old Citizens Advice building. We have moved with the times as the business landscape has evolved due to the impact of technological and digital advancements. But the core emphasis on what we offer has remained the same. The offer now includes apprenticeships, online courses and work-based learning opportunities across a range of sectors, including team leading, digital and customer service. HBTC are an Ofsted rated ‘Good’ training provider. Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills. They inspect services providing education and skills for learners of all ages. HBTC also hold the Matrix Standard, which is the international quality standard for organisations that deliver information, advice and/or guidance (IAG). At lot has changed since 1994, but our original HBTC Mission Statement still remains. “Committed to providing the opportunity for everyone to develop, in a caring and nurturing learning environment, through a highly trained and motivated workforce.”

WQHair extends the deep passion of Waqqas, who stepped into the industry at the young age of 20. Starting his career in 2002 as a hairdresser, he knew this would only be the beginning of a unique career path in the hairdressing industry. What started as a part-time job as a hairstylist in a local salon grew into a lifelong dream to bring a higher level of service to clients. As his skills grew, so did his passion to enhance his training and education in across many areas of the hairdressing industry. That’s where Waqqas was introduced to the Flagship Toni and Guy Academy, where he completed a six-week advanced cutting course. The in-depth training, and his apparently innate talent, lead to the next step in his career path as he took a job with the Academy. Through his work for the Toni and Guy Academy, Waqqas continued to build his skill set, working in the Midlands and London. As he continued to advance his career, his next undertaking would lead him to become an Art Director who offered exclusive services to clients. That’s where he stepped into a new level of success- adding celebrities to his expanding list of clientele. It was here that Waqqas began his working relationship with L’Oreal Professional. He collaborated with the company to offer hairdressing services for photoshoots and fashion shows. This lead to one of the most memorable moments in his career thus far- working at the London Fashion Week for several years. In 2007, Waqqas returned to the Midlands where he would even further his training and education. As he put his skills to work in a salon setting, he began to teach and manage a range of courses required for hairdressers working in the UK and Denmark. In 2013, his training and education would lead him to his current position in the industry. Waqqas trained as a wig maker. This expansion of his expertise would lead him closer to his career goals-bringing a higher level of service to the clients he was so passionate to serve. With a personal experience in the journey of hair loss, Waqqas wanted to help bring his clients a regained confidence through his new skill set. Through his advanced training in Hair Specialties and Make-up, Waqqas also works with professionals in the TV, Film, and Theatre industries who require wigs. Additionally, he currently lectures at the Higher Education level for topics including fashion work, wig styling, and wig making. I’ve always been fascinated by people. In fact, I love people and the fact that we are all so different. And I love conversation. We live in a world which is ever-changing. We have to adapt and some of us find that easier than others. And I'm no exception to that. I’ve spent a good deal of my life finding out what makes people tick, and I didn’t even realise it was happening. And that’s how I came to discover my passion – helping people to change the way they see themselves and the world around them. To learn to love themselves again. To believe in themselves. To overcome stress or emotional pain, whatever the cause. And to begin enjoy life again. Just as I have. My own experiences and extensive training have helped me grow, and I know I will never stop growing and evolving. I still study, attend workshops and training to enhance my knowledge and skills. Although, of course, certificates are no indication of anyone's life experience, wisdom or compassion. When I'm not studying, I love travelling and have had many wonderful experiences. I love anything to do with the theatre, music and dance. I grew up in a theatrical world. I played clarinet, performed on stage from a very young age and have directed musicals. Now, I just love to watch. What's next? Watch this space! MY STORY We all have a story, whether it’s just a few chapters or an enormous long novel. I have my story too, and I’ve used it to change my life and completely turn it around. I'd been interested in spirituality and the mind-body connection for as long as I can remember, and a huge life change gave me opportunity to re-examine the way I lived my life. I really believe that we can change our lives by changing the way we see ourselves and what’s happening around us – our thoughts create our reality. If we let go of negative patterns and limiting beliefs, we can change our thoughts and change our lives. After living through and learning from the many challenges in my own life, I recognised the potential for helping others to embrace positive change into their lives as well. I still apply my training in my own life. Recovering from abuse, self-loathing, failed relationships, lack of confidence and many other things that troubled my past has changed my life completely, just as it can change yours. It doesn’t change what’s happened, you can’t change the past, but you can enjoy your life now and create a better future. I know from personal experience how powerful this can be. I can help you to see what’s holding you back, offering you support and guidance as you go forward and take control of your life. I can’t do the work for you, but I will support you all the way, for as long as you need. Wouldn’t that be great? Loving the life you live and living a life you love? I do, and so can you!

The 8th Imagine! Belfast Festival proved to be a successful offering involving 147 events and 359 speakers & performers during 21-27 March 2022. The eclectic week of talks, workshops, theatre, poetry, comedy, music, exhibitions, film and tours attracted an audience of 9,210 online and in-person attendees. Most of the events (82%) were free as the festival returned to live events after two years operating online. Although Covid continued to impact on our programme with 17 events cancelled due to illness, we were still able to roll out a huge range of events including headliners such as Michael Ignatieff, Tom Robinson, Helen Thompson, Michael Longley, Ece Temelkuran, Bill Neely and a host of exciting arts and cultural events – with many sold out or oversubscribed. We have conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the festival through an audience survey(3.5% sample). Our survey found that 95% of respondents felt the festival satisfied their expectations. It was particularly pleasing to find that 60% of audience members were attending a festival event for the first time and 37% of the sample had never been to a festival venue before, which suggests that we were able to reach new audiences and introduce them to new venues and partners. Other outcomes included: 12% of attendees came from outside Northern Ireland. Of these, 13% stated the festival was the main reason they were visiting Belfast. Audience spend: Our sample spent an average of £35 attending our events Number of festival partners: 52 Number of international participants: 40 with 27 events organised by participants from outside UK & Ireland Number of free events: 121 – 82% of total events Average ticket price: £7.8 Number of workshops: 14 Number of venues used: 35 Media coverage: Total number of items: 98. Reach: 4,022,796. AVE: £181,881. PR value: £545,644 Positive feedback was also elicited from survey respondents, detailed as follows: 95% of respondents felt the festival satisfied their expectations with only 1% reporting dissatisfaction (increased from 94% in 2021) 95.3% of people answered the question ‘after attending the festival, would you be more likely to attend other politics-related events’ (88% last year) 97.8 of respondents stated they were more likely to recommend the festival to family and friends after attending one of our events with 1.6% stating they felt the same When asked whether the festival promotes Belfast and Northern Ireland in a positive way, 98.4% said yes, with 1.6% responding as ‘don’t know’ People appeared to be reasonably well informed about the festival. 92% of the sample stated they were either well or somewhat informed about the festival prior to attending an event Respondents overwhelmingly found the subject matter of the event/performance as the main reason for attending the festival. However, familiarity with the speaker/performer was also cited as a factor. We also asked whether respondents considered themselves to be disadvantaged and found that 21% of the sample considered themselves to fall into this category which suggests were able to significantly engage with vulnerable and less well-off sections of the community. We invited the public to suggest and organise events in November 2021 and received a record 98 proposals, most of which we were able to support. This was a higher than expected level of public participation in the festival which resulted in more events than planned taking place in the 2022 programme. We also had a greater variety of events with more place-making events, exhibitions, music and discussions/workshop events compared to previous years.

We are passionate about enaging people of all ages in ecological issues, natural history and wildlife. We run Community Events such as Moth Breakfasts (opposite) and Community Mothing and have run courses for schools, youth groups, community organisations and home schoolers. We have a multitude of illustrated talks which have gone down a storm at local gardening clubs and Women’s Institutes. We even appeared as a guest lecturer at Birmingham University – examples are listed here The Nomadic Museum of Natural History is a combination of street theatre and education tool. Formulated out of an idea of a ‘Cabinet of Curiosity’ and the plethora of natural history items in our house it slowly became a 1m long transportable natural history museum. We have since taken in all over the country to festivals, events and private functions. Primarily a botanist he has developed skills as an all round naturalist. He has been commissioned on work involving Newt and reptile relocation and survey work at Moredon Park, Swindon Bat monitoring on the Bats in Churches project, Herefordshire Meadow restoration projects in Peterchurch, Herefordshire Badger mitigation work at Snodhill Castle, Herefordshire A summary of his skills is available here Teaching Trees For over 20 years, Teaching Trees been connecting schools with local woodlands across England and Wales. We have been employed to run the programme for Herefordshire and Worcestershire which we have done since 2017. It is funded by the Royal Forestry Society and aims to connect children to woodlands and get them to understand the trees, wildlife and production of timber that are essential for all our health. However we are experts at introducing people to Wool craft and tour the country as the Woolly Circus. All aspects of wool are covered: wet felting, needle felting, weaving, spinning and preperarion of fleeces. We also offer Green Woodworking courses which include Whittling to make spoons and other items from greenwood with axe, knife and crook knife. We are adept at many crafts and in the past have run workshops in knotwork, origami, willow weaving, pewter smithing with cuttlefish, sewing, leatherwork, stone age craft, decoupage and home made toileteries. We are available to run craft activities at festivals, events, parties and groups. He studied tabla in UK with Harjinder Singh Matharu and in India with Shivanand Bandhari at the Naadashree Arts Institute in Kumta, Karnataka, and with Kailash Nishad in Benares (Varanasi). Jon has performed twice at TED events, and his performance at TEDxWarwick was selected from over 10,000 TED events globally for inclusion in the TED Global Music Project. Jon plays a range of percussion instruments and has worked across a wide range of musical styles, from Indian classical music and other traditional world music to contemporary experimental & ‘fusion’ styles, theatre & dance collaborations, and his solo multi-percussion Live Sampling / Live Looping performances – Drumscapes. In 1994 / 1995, Jon returned to India where he learned from Shivanand Bhandari at the Naadashree Arts Institute in Kumta, Karnataka, India. In 1998 & 1999, Jon returned to India and studied with Kailash Nishad in Benares, (Varanasi) in North India, a city renowned for the study of North Indian (Hindustani) music. In 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 & 2005 Jon organised performances & workshops for Kailash in the UK, where he delivered workshops in universities & performed Tabla solos at Arts Centres & venues in the South West UK. During these month long visits to the UK, Kailash stayed with Jon in Devon and continued Jon’s tabla tuition. They also gave performances together, with Taaliqa playing the first set & Kailash performing tabla solo in the second. In 2005 they also performed together in a collaborative finale. Jon’s other musical studies include a BA ( Hons ) Music degree from Dartington College of Arts in 2000, where his main subject was in composing music for live performance.

Our aim is to provide a safe and inviting space in which children and their parents can unleash their creativity and let their imaginations go wild. Pop Up Play village is made up of role play areas. We’d call these sets or scenes if we worked in the glamorous worlds of TV or theatre – but sadly we don’t! We have a hospital, vets, baby nursery, supermarket, café, construction site, library, baby play area, art studio and outdoor explorer zone. Each one filled with high quality toys, props and dressing up kits – specially sourced and impeccably clean. What Makes Us Different? We’re often asked whether we’re a playgroup or a drop in toddler play session. Yes, we have toys to play with, things to dress up in and caffeine on tap but our village is about much more than that… Our play sessions have been specially designed by an expert in early years education to help children learn and develop through play. Each of our areas provides them with the tools to develop socially and learn more about themselves, their peers and the world we live in. And whilst this is about education and development, our key priority is having fun. That means fun for everyone. There are no adult wallflowers here. Parents and carers are welcomed into our village and actively encouraged to lose their inhibitions and play together with their children in a way that’s often just not possible at home. And whilst we love our village and all the characters who live in it, we realise it’s good to shake things up a bit from time to time. That’s why we often invite guests to play – dinosaurs, pirates, mermaids, unicorns and dragons – to name a few. We also mark events and the seasons as we pass through the year. Laying The Foundations It was back in 2007 when I started teaching my first ever class that the first foundations of the Play Village were laid. Watching the children in my reception class acting out real-life scenarios in the role play corner, I realised the true value of learning through play. I’d always worked hard to create engaging and realistic areas in which the children could let their imaginations run free. I absolutely loved teaching and gained six fantastic years of experience before having my first child. When my son was 2, I found at weekends it was really hard to find fun, exciting places to take him. It was on one cold, dreary Sunday afternoon in February that the idea of running pop up role play events came into my head along with the name Pop Up Play Village! I thought about it for many months after this vision and it wasn’t until after my daughter was born in June 2016 that I decided it was time to go for it by opening up the world of mobile role play to children and their parents in my local area. Of course, Pop Up Play Village didn’t pop up overnight and as with any build, a great deal of research and testing came before. I wanted every element of the village to be the best it could possibly be and so sourcing the right toys and props took time. Safety, durability and play-ability were key and thankfully, as well as many years of teaching experience behind me, I had two excellent testers in the shape of my children – who were inspiration and guinea pig in equal measure! The doors finally opened on Pop Up Play Village in 2017 and we’re proud to say we’ve undergone huge expansion since. We’re now popping up all over Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire. We run sessions for families and schools, entertain children at weddings and events and host their birthday parties. We’ve already been accredited by the Approved Franchise Association and also have the support of two major high street banks – Lloyds and NatWest. But we’re not sitting back. We’ve got ambitious plans and there’s plenty more to be done if we are to bring the Pop Up Play Village experience to many more families across the country and beyond.
