Refuge In Literacy Uk

London

Refuge In Literacy UK began when children’s author Anne Stairmand donated signed copies of her books to a local domestic violence refuge at Christmas 2020. The response was so positive she wondered if this would be the case throughout the UK, and so she spent the following January and February speaking to over 300 refuges in the UK asking whether authors donating signed copies of their books to their local refuges would make an impact. From the joy of receiving a personal gift, to the simple joy of reading, to the educational, emotional and self-improvement opportunities books can present – which in turn can create empowerment and self-esteem – it was clear these books would have an impact. Children will have a sense of value, worth, self-esteem … They will harness a willingness to read, to learn, to savour the process of reading, escapism and transformative powers of a book. — Thurrock Changing Pathways Essex, 2021 Refuge In Literacy UK is also aiming to address a lack of consistency in literacy resources and training by supporting refuges with reading strategy prompts which feed into the National Curriculum. Our pilot refuges, currently nine across the UK, will help trial these, and evaluations will help us refine and improve. The wider benefits of a signed personal copy of a book cannot be underestimated, encouraging children and parents to become literacy confident in reading, writing and comprehension. — Glasgow Women’s Aid, 2021 We are a board of six directors and have seven board advisors with expertise in many different areas who attend meetings to support and advise throughout the year. The personal benefits of having a newly, personally signed book, creates a sense of empowerment. However, the benefits transcend far beyond the token of a personal gift. — Liverpool Women’s Refuge, 2021 As we are a non-profit organisation, the board are committed to helping those in domestic violence refuges to improve literacy life chances in for those in education and in the wider world.

Coconut Thinking is an advisory that supports schools and learning organizations nurture ecosystems grounded in relationships that contribute to the thriving of the bio-collective—any living thing that has an interest in the healthfulness of the planet. We help you create, develop, stress test, and implement their ideas for sustainable and regenerative learning design. In other words, we work alongside you to shift your learning ecosystem, and the experiences within it, toward life-affirming practices. This might include: designing and leading workshops; creating and implementing professional development initiatives; serving as a critical friend on projects, initiatives, and plans; collaborating on endeavors that liberate learning; bouncing ideas about what might just be possible; and anything else that takes us toward more regenerative ways of becoming. We also connect schools with practitioners, artists, and industry experts to create collaborative spaces that respond to contextual challenges: learning together through contribution to the bio-collective, shoulder to shoulder across generations. What happens when we prioritize relationships among all living things? We believe learning is more than a twelve-year individual journey in educational institutions, more than something that can be measured, standardized, sorted, and labeled. We believe in learning for and as the bio-collective, recognizing that we are interconnected and that nothing exists in isolation. We don’t want to overthrow the system, we want to work with those who can imagine something else is possible. We ask ourselves one guiding question: How do our responses contribute to the thriving of the bio-collective? In our view, learning is not an end in itself. Learning is a process that happens when one experience changes behavior in a subsequent experience, behavior that is expressed in the form of responses to our dynamic contexts. Learning is like potential energy that is converted to kinetic energy through these responses. We believe that this energy should be used to contribute to the thriving of the bio-collective.

GTG Training (Edinburgh)

The Glasgow Training Group was established in Kirkintilloch, Glasgow, in 1971, with the aim of delivering high-quality apprenticeships across the West of Scotland for the automotive industry. The company, which was created by an automotive retail consortium including Sir Arnold Clark, brought about much-needed change for apprentices and the entire industry, and introduced a varied and innovative training programme that would grow to become one of the most respected in the UK. Purchased by the Arnold Clark Group in 2003, the business soon became known as GTG Training Ltd. and expanded its offering to provide high-quality training courses and education across a wide range of disciplines, such as Business Skills, Computer & IT, Health & Safety, Transport & Logistics and Automotive Technical. With £50million of investment since 2004, GTG now owns five dedicated training centres – in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Wolverhampton. At the very core of the business lies a deep-seated passion for providing high-quality apprenticeships. We recognise the importance of investing in the future workforce and our aim is to give learners the skills and experience they need to succeed in the automotive, transport and health and safety industries. GTG hears the voice of its stakeholders and is always considering how best to meet their needs, including clients, learners, delegates, staff, the Board and the wider industry. That’s why we consistently reinvest our profits to provide flexible and effective workspaces, up-to-date technology, relevant and modern equipment, dedicated staff and more. The growth of the business has coincided with a number of important milestones – becoming the official provider of fleet services and volunteer training for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games; a visit from Prince Charles in 2015 following our involvement with Prince’s Trust Get into Cars initiative and our Training Provider of the Year award at the 2019 Talent in Logistics awards. With the approval of many prestigious bodies, such as SQA, IMI, RHA, ILM, FTA, City and Guilds, GTG has defined its position as one of the UK's most innovative, experienced and qualified training providers.

Wilson's School

IN THE GREAT WAR, 730 Old Wilsonians and staff went to fight. 120 never came back. To this day they are commemorated on the school’s War Memorial, which was opened in the old school (Camberwell) in 1921 following donations from the OW community. It was one of the few items brought from the old school to Sutton, demonstrating its spiritual and moral importance to our community. This week, assemblies led by the Head allowed the school to remember the fallen. The Headmaster’s talk focused on the significant (but often overlooked) contribution of troops and labourers from all over the world during both World Wars. India (modern day India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) contributed 1.4 million troops up to 1919 and saw action at Ypres, Neuve La Chapelle, Gallipoli and Mesopotamia. Fighting on both sides, two million men from the African continent were involved, with ten percent being killed or dying of disease. Mr Cole has spoken in the past of the cultural sensitivities shown to Muslim, Hindu and Sikh soldiers who were treated in a military hospital based in George IV’s extravagant pavilion in Brighton, but this year’s assembly focussed on the Double V Campaign to ensure civil rights for those who were returning from battle. Mr Cole emphasised the importance of commemorating all who fought in this and subsequent conflicts and reminded all present of the need not just for respect, but for gratitude to those who enable us to live in a free and tolerant society. We are reminded that many men and women from around the world gave their tomorrow for our today. At the end of the assembly the Head read out a selection of names of those who fell from our community, a wreath was placed by the School Captain (accompanied by members of the CCF) at the school’s War Memorial and silence observed after the sounding of the Last Post.

Morse Alpha Expeditions - Sailing

morse alpha expeditions - sailing

For the truth is that I already know as much about my fate as I need to know. The day will come when I will die. So the only matter of consequence before me is what I will do with my allotted time. I can remain on shore, paralyzed with fear, or I can raise my sails and dip and soar in the breeze. Richard Bode, First You Have To Row A Little Boat Morse Alpha Expeditions was born out of a need for quality leadership training in the recreational yachting world. Most sail-training programs focus on the essential hard skills. After years of experience in the professional maritime industry, we decided to not only cover expedition sailing skills in a Morse Alpha Expedition but also emphasize crisis management, leadership, professionalism, and camaraderie. These are the skills that will keep you and your crew safely working together even in a crisis situation. Our programs cover a broad curriculum of hard skills such as sail theory, weather, technology, voyage planning, first aid at sea, engines, traditional navigation, emergency drills (MOB, drogue, fire, etc), VHF protocol, RADAR, anchoring, and more. But it doesn’t stop there. We also discuss communication and leadership, bridge resource management (BRM), maritime law and conduct, etc. Our philosophy is that even when you aren’t sailing a commercial vessel, you are still bound by the same laws, weather challenges, crew dynamics, and physical forces. Therefore, recreational sailing shouldn’t be taken lightly. But on the flipside – we love to laugh, bake cookies on cold days, dip in the ocean, and have fun. On a Morse Alpha Expedition you might be woken in the middle of the night to stand anchor watch on deck, or you might be laughing over a bowl of popcorn after a hard days work. Morse Alpha Expeditions are the perfect balance of serious training and light-hearted fun.

Welcome to Abbey College; your local school where every child is known as an individual and all children can achieve their ambitions. We believe a good education is crucial for the wellbeing and fulfilment of our students. This was highlighted in our most recent successful Ofsted inspection where the school was awarded Good in every category and achieved an overall Good status. We provide an excellent education and the best opportunities for the students in our care. As society continues to change, it is important that our school provides a safe and stable environment where all young people feel valued, can learn and achieve the best of their abilities. 100% of our parents last year said that they would recommend the school to other parents on Parent View, which is just one of the things we are very proud of.   In 2019, (the last time official examinations were taken), 68% of our students achieved the top 4-9 grades (the equivalent of the old A*-C) in both English and Maths, with over 50% attaining grades 5-9. Our collective aim is to ensure that all students experience happiness, while they are challenged to meet goals and achieve their dreams, alongside celebration, reflection, and tradition. A student’s education is not a dress rehearsal; they only get one chance. I believe that high quality teaching, learning and engagement is at the heart of every good school. I look forward to continuing to work with the wonderful team at Abbey College, to ensure our students have the best opportunities to be successful. At Abbey College, we run a wide variety of extra-curricular and leadership opportunities for our students allowing them to show their potential in many ways; from joining the Junior Leadership Team to becoming one of our Sports Leaders. We are proud of our students and staff, so please come and meet us all and experience the College for yourself. To arrange a visit, please call or email and we will be delighted to arrange a personal tour for you.

You look at the ever new opportunities and challenges arising from technological innovation, from advancements in knowledge and science, from new trends in society, and from transformations in the natural environment. Understanding the nature and magnitude of change is key. It is the first step towards formulating a new strategy and designing a new role for your organisation. Through tailored, problem-based learning, we help you gain complete understanding of the changes to come. Learn ...to create a new vision Every minor shift in any industry has the potential to turn into that ‘big change’. The change that creates new scenarios of use, defines new business roles and relationships and gives rise to new leaders. We help you ‘see’ today the impact that transformations in the business environment will have on your organisation tomorrow.
