After a four year degree studying French, German and Spanish - I decided the obvious thing to do next was teach English in Japan! Random - but I’m so thankful I made this decision: because it was my introduction to teaching and set me on the path as an educator. 3 years later, I trained as a yoga teacher in Scotland, before moving to Cornwall and deciding I wanted to be a Primary School Teacher. I wanted to share with kids so much about life and the world! Teaching was, admittedly, harder than expected. I loved elements but hated others. I’d always prioritised my health and wellbeing - but I found myself becoming stressed like I’d never experienced before. I know now that if I’d have continued to prioritise my own wellbeing, not only would teaching have been easier - but the children would have also benefited so much more. This is one of the key reasons Class Yoga is here: to raise the wellbeing of educators, so that the pupils benefit in turn. (Listen to more on this, here.) I believe we need to look after our own wellbeing to raise the wellbeing of our pupils I started to share yoga when I could. I got to see what worked and what didn’t; and I got a glimpse of some promising results. But when I left full-time teaching and started supply (and sharing more yoga) I started getting called back - to teach yoga! Because now the clear evidence, of greater calm and focus in children in the classroom after yoga, was shining out! So began my calling to teach yoga to more children, in more schools. Over this time, I developed and refined my method of teaching mindful movement to children, that I still teach and train others in, today. On becoming an independent social enterprise, we went on to deliver large-scale neighbourhood regeneration programmes like the Single Regeneration Budget, New Deal for Communities and Neighbourhood Renewal Funding. In 2011 Renaisi was part of the consortium that set up the Big Local programme. Our role managing the ‘reps’ took us beyond London and allowed us to bring together the two halves of our expertise; supporting communities and social research. Alongside that national work we delivered services in Islington, Haringey and Hackney that helped migrant communities get the most out of the local school system. While the policy and funding landscape has changed a lot in the last 20+ years, ‘place’ has remained the lens we use to consider our work. We’re constantly learning from the different perspectives we see from working directly with communities, with the providers of services and the investors in communities. Active Cumbria, the Sport and Physical Activity Partnership is one of 42 Active Partnerships in England and is hosted within Cumbria County Council’s Public Health Team. Through strategic connectivity and partnerships, Active Cumbria has facilitated many measurable and positive outcomes contributing to an increase in participation in physical activity and sport. Our 5 Year Plan provides us with a framework which helps inform our decision making around effort and investment, and has been developed in partnership with our Advisory Board and wider sector partners to reflect the key challenges that increased levels of physical activity can contribute and support to improve the health and wellbeing of our communities. Tackling inequalities in participation in sport and physical activity is at the heart of the Plan, and aligns with the ambitions of Sport England’s 10 Year Strategy ‘Uniting the Movement’ which can be viewed here. Active Cumbria is governed by an independent Advisory Board, made up of highly skilled individuals from a range of backgrounds. The Board operates under an agreed Terms of Reference, and provides strategic leadership to the organisation and to the Core Team of professionals, who provide the co-ordination and structures which allow individuals and organisations to work together more effectively. The Advisory Board is committed to meeting the requirements of the Government’s Code for Sports Governance, and regularly reviews all aspects of its operations to ensure it is meeting the requirements of a Tier 3 organisation. One demonstrable way of evidencing our commitment to achieving the aims of the Code is through the make-up of the Advisory Board, which currently consists of 42% female members, against a target of 40%. This figure increases to 50% female representation when looking at only independent (and not Ex-officio) Advisory Board members.

I was graduated from Yildiz Technical University, which is one of Turkey’s leading universities, Chemical Engineering Department in 2004. When I was studying at the university, I was tutoring lessons in chemistry, mathematics, physics and science. Later, I worked as a chemistry/science teacher in a private education tutoring school. I completed my master’s degree formation as a chemistry teacher which allowed me to work in all schools in Turkey as a Chemistry/Science Teacher. In addition, I started my master’s degree in chemical engineering. But, with the birth of my daughter, I quit my second master thesis. After working for 8 years as a chemistry/science teacher, I was promoted as the head of the chemistry and the department of science. Two years later, I was promoted to the Deputy Principal of the Secondary School. After working for 3 years as the Deputy Principal of the Secondary School, I worked for 2 years as the Principal of the Secondary and High School director. During my work, except for my business, I participated in many programmes to help and support young people. One of them is the Duke of Edinburgh International Youth Award. I worked as an award leader supervisor and coordinator. Another one is for gifted and talented students, I developed some activities in science and maths with my colleagues. During the period I worked, I realized the importance of personal development and participated in many training programs. After my training in mentoring and coaching, there was a huge change in my attitude on life. It is possible for each student to reach the maximum of his / her potential with proper directions. In this context, I am coaching and mentoring and try my best to guide the students and their parents to make the right choice for the right high school and the right university.

The Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) is a networking community that assists local authorities who are striving to improve their frontline services. APSE works with more than 250 local authorities across the UK to advise and share information and expertise on a broad range of frontline public services. These councils are supported by a team of experts, who draw upon a wealth of knowledge in areas such as policy and practice, as well as in vital frontline service areas. Members of APSE have access to many excellent benefits that help local authorities to grow.
