It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to our website, which we hope captures the ethos of our wonderful Academy. Harris Academy Morden is a wonderful place to learn and teach. We have a very hard working team of teachers and support staff; they provide a caring and welcoming atmosphere for our students. The Academy site is a huge site with close to 6 acres of school buildings, sports halls, gymnasium, all weather pitches, tennis courts and large playing fields / athletic track thus providing excellent facilities. The Academy has a limit of 900 places across Year 7-11. We are unlike other schools; we do not want to expand at this moment in time, in fact we wish to remain small for as long as possible! This will ensure a small school where your child is known to staff and a caring environment can be provided. The Academy is traditional in our approach to discipline and uniform, yet forward-thinking and at the cutting edge of curriculum development. The Academy aims to develop the whole child. The School aims to cater for everyone. Children are accepted from the age of three years, and we provide classes for all ages, including adults. Children can train in ballet, modern theatre dance, tap and (when they are a little older) jazz, musical theatre, commercial jazz and contemporary dance. Adults, too, can attend ballet and tap. The majority of our students want to dance for sheer pleasure, some will want to work towards examinations and others may want to make dancing their career. Whatever their aims we give them every encouragement to achieve them. Dancing should be fun! Our first priority is that students enjoy themselves, safely and under the eye of experienced teachers. But dancing also provides other benefits: exercise and an improvement in posture and co-ordination; development of confidence and social skills; musical and artistic appreciation; the cultivation of imagination, to mention a just a few. All of our teachers have been through Enhanced DBS checks. Most of our teachers are qualified with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) and those who are working towards their teaching qualifications are regularly monitored. All are enthusiastic and work hard to ensure that a high standard of teaching is maintained at all levels. The Weston is a business partnership which aims to provide a friendly and personal atmosphere for students and parents. Salto is a vibrant and active centre, over 2000 people use our facility every week through schools, parent and toddlers, classes and squads. We are proud to have over 1200 current British Gymnastics members and 50 members of Gymnastics Ireland regularly using our facilities. Through our range of programmes we offer gymnastics activity for everyone. We have created opportunities for our performance gymnasts to move into the Salto Gymfusion display team, sports acrobatics or undertake level 1 coaching awards. This ensures our gymnasts can make smooth transitions from one discipline to another at the same facility within the same gymnastics family. Our Elite WAG and MAG squads have the opportunity to be selected for Celtic Cup, Northern Europeans, Europeans, Worlds, Youth Olympics, UKSG and Commonwealth Games. We are the only gym club in Northern Ireland to be represented at all these events. We have an excellent relationship with our local City Council in Lisburn who provided the land for the facility and were instrumental in our bid to become an Olympic Training camp. Our Club won the Lisburn Sports Club of the year in 2011. In addition to our satellite clubs in the local primary schools, we have excellent links with many schools in NI with 25 schools regularly taking part in gymnastics classes at Salto throughout each week of the school year. In addition we work with local education providers (FE and HE) in the provision of training, coach mentoring, employment and work experience for their students.

The School is one of the oldest in the country. The exact date of foundation is not known, but we know that in 1326 a Chantry School was already established at the old castle of Hanley. At the time of the Reformation, Hanley re-emerged as a Grammar School, and we have a charter from 1544 in the reign of Henry VIII. In 1633 a new body of Trustees was appointed and in 1733 the school was re-built; these buildings (much modified) are still in use today. The 1991 building programme considerably improved the facilities at the school and as a consequence of becoming a Specialist School for Languages we secured funding for a £2 million eight-classroom language and computing block which was opened in September 2008. Our magnificent new sixth form centre was opened in September 2016. Various additional building projects have expanded and enhanced facilities for performing arts, science, PE, humanities and maths departments. We have recently improved and enlarged dining facilities and student toilets. College (House) System The origins of our school can be traced back with some certainty to 1486, when it was given its own buildings and income. However, there is a suggestion that from as early as 1326 the chantry priest may have taught the children of the parish on or near our current school site. The parish of Hanley (later to become Hanley Castle) has an ancient and fascinating history. Although there is evidence of a Roman fort by the river, and of a Roman temple on the site of the church, the first direct references to Hanlee have been found in two charters dated 962 and 972 A.D. At the time of the Norman Conquest (1066-1088) the area was over-run with trees and like all forests belonged to the King of England, who enjoyed exclusive hunting rights. However, within 50 years areas of the forest had been cleared and Hanley had grown into a thriving community. The name Hanley comes from the old English han leah, meaning ‘high clearing’. We have named our new colleges after three major settlements within the forest, reflecting the ancient history of our unique community.
