The Broken Spoke is a not-for-profit social enterprise started by people who are really passionate about cycling, and we provide open workshop support, mechanics courses, cycle training, women’s and transgender people only mechanics sessions, and a hub of information for people who cycle (or really want to). We partner with local community organisations, school groups, and individuals with the goal of making people more proficient and confident in cycle maintenance and riding. Since February 2018, Broken Spoke has been registered as a Community Benefit Society with charitable objectives and we are registered with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) under number 31918R as Broken Spoke Bicycles Limited. Some history Broke Spoke was founded in June 2012. From the beginning the founders have been working closely with the Cooperative Enterprise Hub for advice and training. Thanks to their assistance and support, Broken Spoke became a fully fledged not-for-profit Industrial and Provident Society Multistakeholder Co-operative in December 2012. (Phew, that’s a mouthful…) On 10 October 2016, we updated our registration in line with the current legislation and were then called a ‘registered society under the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014’. (…not sure if that made it easier?) In 2017 we decided that the Community Benefit Society model is actually a better fit with the purpose and objectives of Broken Spoke. On 12 February 2018 we registered the amendment of our rules and thereby transitioned to being a Community Benefit Society, still registered under the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014. We are also still dedicated to adhering to the co-operative principles and are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity.

The length of any training course will depend on what type of machine is used, the environment it is used in & the experience of the candidates on the training course. 1-day refresher courses for experienced operators that haven’t had any training for at least a 3-5-year period (this is the time period recommended by the HSE to employers whereby staff need to be refresher trained, on all site equipment). 3-5-day courses: for novices who have not received any formal training and have no experience. All courses begin with theory sessions where candidates learn the theoretical background knowledge of the respective machine they are being trained on. This will include any relevant aspects of current UK statutory legislation, there will be a mandatory theory assessment at some point in the training. Practical training begins with an explanation as to the operation of the relevant piece of MHE equipment. Practical elements cover daily machine checks and safe operating techniques – candidates will then practice the operation of the machine until you become proficient, whereby a practical assessment will take place.

The Pen Green Centre was set up as part of a substantive under-fives initiative and is housed in a 1930s former comprehensive school. At the Centre we offer high quality education and care for children and their families. We also offer information and support services for parents through home visiting, group work, health interventions, adult education and training as well as the professional development, training and dissemination of good practice though the Research, Development and Training Base, and the Teaching School. The principle functions of the Centre have remained constant over the last 37 years although we have significantly developed the accommodation. We have maintained our principles of operation; withstood radical changes in local and national government; responded creatively to new legislation and to major demographic changes, and influenced national government policy in early years.

COVID-19 - Delivery Model With social distancing measures likely to be in place for the foreseeable future, we shall be offering our services through applications such as Zoom and MS Teams, e-portfolios, auto marked online courses via the website. All this will be part of the training. We are also able to offer one-one and group coaching through this medium. We are looking at one-day workshops divided into three two-hour sessions maximum of 6 per session delivered over consecutive days or alternate days in any one week. This is open to discussion with individual customer needs. One benefit of the new format is to encourage people to have the opportunity of learning new skills with digital learning techniques. This will reflect in the Schemes of work and will be identified in the Initial Assessment.
