Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School was founded in 1701 in accordance with the last will and testament of Sir Joseph Williamson, who bequeathed five thousand pounds “towards the building and carrying on and perpetual maintaining of a free school at Rochester for the instructing and educating of such youth there who were or should be the sons of freemen these towards the Mathematics and all other things which fit and encourage them for the sea service and arts and callings leading and relating thereto”. Sir Joseph Williamson served as a leading politician and diplomat during the reign of King Charles II. He was first elected as MP for Rochester in 1690 and held various offices (including Secretary of State aged 41) until his retirement in 1699 when he settled to live at Cobham Hall. At one time he was President of the Royal Society, Keeper of the King’s Library at Whitehall and Editor of the Oxford Gazette. He receives mention in the diaries of Samuel Pepys. Williamson’s life and work is not without controversy. He was an investor and administrator in the Royal African Company, a trading company set up in 1660 and led by the Duke of York (future King James II). This company held the monopoly of the English slave trade from Africa to the West Indies. Professor William Pettigrew from Lancaster University, in his book ‘Freedom’s Debt: The Royal African Company and the Politics of the Atlantic Slave Trade, 1672-1752’ (2016) writes that the Company ‘shipped more enslaved African women, men and children to the Americas than any other single institution during the entire period of the transatlantic slave trade’.

In their daily work, Colin, David, Emilia and Stuart had witnessed the power of sport first hand, be it in the incredible stories of women who fought against all odds just to get the chance to play the beautiful game, or in the children kicking a makeshift ball in a slum where the game seemed to wipe off their worries and create the brightest of smiles on their faces. Dream Fields was born out of the hope to spread this joy and grow it into sustainability livelihoods for communities where everyone has the right to play. The Dream Fields concept was born from this search for not merely ‘sport for good’ but ‘sport for sustainable and prosperous communities’. In 2021, co-founder Stuart decided to embark on a journey to better understand the real issues around sport and sustainability. As part of a course with the Cambridge Institute of Sustainability Leadership, he presented a general concept of how a sports facility could become the focal point of driving a local economy with a heavy focus on environmental sustainability, ultimately hoping to reach the level of interdependence seen in various symbiosis projects globally. After completing the programme, Stuart shared the concept with former colleagues Colin, David and Emilia. As the concept grew wings, Samy joined the team to bring in his operations and engineering expertise. - Dream Fields was born.

Carole originally trained in Therapeutic Massage and Clinical Aromatherapy with the Association of Natural Medicine in 1993. She has worked with local GP surgeries and in the local hospital offering complementary services to pregnant women and baby massage classes. In 1997 she trained in Neuroskeletal Re-Alignment Therapy in Australia. She gained her teacher training qualification in 1996 and has been teaching since, including 10 years at at Adult College in London. She has trained in various other therapies over the years and kept her knowledge updated constantly. She has written many national qualifications at HE and FE level. She is a Founding Member of Complementary Health Professionals, a Fellow of the Association of Natural Medicine and an Honorary Member of the International Federation of Aromatherapists. Carole also sits on the General Massage Therapy Council for CHP. About Dan Stephens FCHP, FFHT, MAoR, CNHC Registered Dan started his training in 2007 with VTCT in complementary therapies and then completed his reiki training in 2010. He has since further enhanced his knowledge, studying advanced aromatherapy and advanced massage as well as qualifying in Neuroskeletal Re-alignment Therapy and Crystal Healing Therapy. In 2018, Dan graduated to teach complementary therapies and has been working with Carole. Dan is also the Reiki Officer for Complementary Health Professionals and sits on the UK Reiki Council. Dan wrote the first UK accredited course on CBD for therapists. He is a Fellow of Complementary Health Professionals, a Fellow of the Federation for Holistic Therapists, a member of the Association of Reflexologists and is registered with the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council for aromatherapy, massage, reflexology and reiki.

I am a 500hr qualified yoga and meditation instructor, with a passion for spirituality and related practices. I have worked in various settings that inform how I work. My work with the charity S.A.N.E on a mental health helpline and W.I.S.H (women in secure hospitals) gave me a deep understanding of lived experiences of mental health. My time in various community settings both in youth and adult services offering support and wellbeing services, has developed my awareness of the factors from our childhood and youth as well as socio-economic and environmental factors that inform the adults we become. In recent year my interest has been in working with individuals and groups to get deeper into the work of creating transformation in their hearts and lives. My practice is informed by my own journey through mental health challenges and addiction recovery. Its my lived experience that gives me a genuine compassion, directness and approachability. Alongside my wellbeing work I work as a Specialist Autism Support Worker with the National Autistic Society. I am passionate about working with the unique strengths and challenges of neuro-diversity, having pursued a late diagnosis of ASD myself in 2017.
