Carrie has over 30 years’ experience in education - now Director of Curriculum for the Brooke Weston Trust and a visiting fellow for Ambition Institute delivering NPQ training, Carrie was at that time the Principal of Peckover Primary School in Wisbech; a school with 54% of pupils, originating from many parts of Europe, having English as an additional language. This was a challenge that she tackled with great enthusiasm and creativity! Our first step was to re-write the curriculum completely, ensuring children were exposed to high quality texts and a wide range of vocabulary. Our classroom environments immersed children in their learning and our mantra was ‘talk, talk and more talk’. We planned structured oral opportunities into all our lessons, using the excellent ‘Tower Hamlets, ‘progression in Language structures; we had continuous provision from Nursery through to year 2 centred on language rich environments and opportunities. However, we discovered that once our pupils had acquired enough English to let them read, write and converse fluently, the progress of some began to plateau. These could be pupils who weren’t speaking their first language much at home, or reading books in it. In some cases, pupils were starting to lose their first language altogether, making it harder to build and develop their English. We sent a set of BeeLingual UK dual-language books home with every EAL child, so they could read stories in their first language and in English with their parents We used our bilingual Teaching Assistants to lead daily first language discussion groups to develop a rich and challenging vocabulary We used colourful discussion mats to pre-teach pupils in first language and English, deploying them alongside stems based on Progression in Language Structures Our pastoral team used first language emotion cards to help pupils describe and explain their feelings We introduced a ‘no hands up’ policy to promote lively class discussion We taught the whole schools songs in first languages and English Using the resources we were developing at BeeLingual UK, we introduced a whole raft of strategies to cultivate a rich vocabulary in first language and subsequently in English.

With over 25 years of experience in the fields of training and leadership development in both the retail and education sectors I know my stuff. My leadership career began when I worked for a bookshop chain in central London, working my way up to the role of store manager at branches in Baker Street, Earls Court and Holborn at the age of 20. This was followed by a period working as a training manager for Tesco at their first central London store on Oxford Street. My success in this role led to me being seconded to support the opening of Tesco’s flagship store in Kensington, where I helped to lead the recruitment and training of all new staff in preparation for the store’s launch. In 1999 I entered the education sector. I started as a volunteer in a pre-school, then secured a job as a Learning Support Assistant and eventually retrained as a class teacher. In my second year of teaching I took on a curriculum leadership role, which at the time was an unusual move for a new teacher. I’ve spent the last 19 years developing my career and I’m currently the headteacher of a primary school in south London. In 2014 I set up my own publishing company 9:10 Publishing. This was born out of an observation that there were very few books for young black people which were written from a black British perspective. Rather than rely on traditional publishing houses to take up my ideas, I looked into what was required to do it myself. As a result Letters to a Young Generation was born. The first book was aimed at boys and in 2016 I published another edition for girls. Visit the 9:10 Publishing website to find out more. I have a Post Graduate Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring Practice from Oxford Brookes University, where I am also a member of their Coaching and Mentoring Society. We are part of Portsmouth City Councils Employment, Learning and Skills service. We are fully externally funded with the main source of funding being the contribution which comes through our contract with the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) which we seek to supplement though other sources, such as The Good Things Foundations UK Online Centres. This means that we are able to provide certain courses free of charge, others at heavily subsidised rates and offer reduced fees for those on means tested benefits – see our Curriculum Strategy and Fees Policy for more information. We operate from our purpose built centre; The Learning Place, 6 Derby Road, North End, in Nelson ward and you are welcome to drop-in and see us to find out more. The centre core opening times are 9.00 – 16.30 Monday to Thursday, and to 15.45 Fridays. Our aim is to provide high quality learning experiences for adults living and working in and around Portsmouth. All teaching staff are trained to teach adults, with appropriate additional subject specialism qualifications and are required to complete annual training / professional development. We understand that for some, learning supports leisure and for others it builds capacity and skills, enabling them to get back to work, take a greater role in their community or better support their childrens learning. We therefore try to provide a responsive programme which maximises access to community learning for adults, bringing new opportunities and improving lives, whatever people’s circumstances, such as: Qualification based courses supporting readiness to work / employability including: Functional Skills English, maths and ICT from entry levels up to level 2 Food Safety in Catering Apprenticeships for those aged 16+ New accredited courses are being run regularly. We only have a limited budget but we do look to prioritise its use to meet identified demand, so tell us what you would like to learn and why! Many of our programmes can also be delivered in a range of venues, so if you represent a community or organisation and are interested in hosting some courses, let us know that too! In addition to the courses we deliver, a small proportion of our funding is allocated to enable quality contracted providers to be engaged, through a robust procurement process, resulting in a broader community reach. In 2021/22 our current key areas for development are: Work readiness, pre-employment skills including increased business / employer links internally and externally, to particularly support the ongoing development of Apprenticeship programmes. Baginton Fields School, Coventry admits secondary aged students with severe and complex SEND. The school commissioned Links Therapy Company to provide specific advice, support and expertise to further develop a newly implemented curriculum for students with ASD. Links Therapy provided a bespoke support programme including student observations and assessments, staff tutorials and feedback sessions that focused on personalising best practice for individual students within the context of the emerging curriculum. Staff expertise was enhanced considerably as a result of mutual professional respect and aspiration to provide optimum opportunity for student progression. I was particularly impressed by the extensive expertise demonstrated by Links Therapy colleagues who were flexible and professional throughout their time at Baginton Fields. Simon Grant - Headteacher, Baginton Fields School, Coventry We were very pleased with the work carried out with one of our students. There was a variety of OT packages to choose from. We decided on an initial consultation and a follow up of 6 "hands on" sessions. These were carried out weekly on a 1:1 basis. The practitioners were very professional and liaised with school staff throughout. We were provided with a detailed report after the intervention and will continue to implement the detailed guidance. I would definitely recommend Links Therapy and would use them again in future. Being a small charity our therapists are at a greater risk of becoming isolated from their profession. Links Therapy company have provided a link for our therapists to discuss any professional queries they may have. Their role has developed to the point where they are now helping us to develop and take our service forward. Their input has been essential to us now having an Occupational therapy team in place. There friendly and professional approach to their work has impressed us greatly and look forward to continuing our relationship with them. All our pupils have special educational needs, some of these can be quite complex. Becky has worked closely with our teachers and school leadership to develop individualised programmes for our pupils as well as advising on the purchase of specialist equipment plus delivering in-services training.
