Introduction to Design Thinking

Come and have some fun with clay in the peaceful setting of my studio located in the cottage garden of our home on the Cambridgeshire/Norfolk border.This 1-day (approximately 6 hours with an hour&#39;s break in the middle for lunch) one to one workshop is a comprehensive session aimed at those who wish to have a more in-depth experience, creating pieces which will be made using all the fundamental ceramics disciplines of pinching, coiling, slab building &amp; throwing. The workshops are structured to be fun and creative, and students can let their imaginations run wild during their private tuition. There will be no other students in the studio.The sessions are hands-on, and the student will be able to use all the studio facilities (clay, various tools and print-making equipment, extruders, the pottery wheel, etc.). At the end of the 1-day workshop, the student can choose up to 6 pieces that they wish to have glazed and fired. Once they have dried sufficiently, I will then biscuit fire, glaze and glaze fire the pieces. These can then be either collected by the student (if they live locally) or I can post them (I have to charge postage &amp; packaging). Each student will also be provided with a certificate of completion.&nbsp;Please understand that it takes a few weeks for pieces to dry thoroughly and for me to then biscuit fire, glaze, and subsequently glaze fire them.I also offer a 1/2-day one-to-one workshop for 1 person, and both of the 1/2-day and 1-day workshops can be attended by two people or pairs if preferred (please refer to the "Beginners 1-day one to one pottery/ceramics workshop for 2 people").&nbsp;This makes a great Valentine&#39;s, anniversary, or birthday gift - and also opens up the workshop to parents with children.&nbsp;Contact us for more information or to discuss requirements.&nbsp;About a week before your workshop date, we&#39;ll e-mail you again with more details about parking etc.We also offer accommodation in the form of our Crafter&#39;s Retreat cabin (www.craftersretreat.co.uk) or we can advise of other local B&amp;Bs. All tools and materials are included. We have a selection of old shirts available, but the student may wish to bring their own smock/shirt/apron. It&rsquo;s important that the student wears comfortable shoes and clothing.&nbsp;2. Rings and bracelets will need to be removed during the workshop (they mark the clay, and you don&rsquo;t want the clay ruining your jewellery either) &ndash; I can provide a pot to put them in if required.&nbsp;3. Refreshments (tea/coffee/soft drinks) are provided for all workshops, and a light, rustic farmhouse-style lunch will be provided for the full-day workshops - we cater to all dietary requirements.4. The studio is equipped with a wedging table, extruder, large table for hand building, two Shimpo pottery wheels and a large top-loader kiln.6. The private session is either for one or a maximum of two people; this ensures that the student gets the maximum benefit from the day with no distractions.7. The age limit is 16+ or younger if accompanied by an adult.8. I am insured (IWW/5102205).9. The student will be provided with a certificate of completion.10. A fun creative workshop in Worcester (a private class as a 1-1 or for a small group of up to 3 people) to create your own enamelled copper jewellery to take home with you at the end of the session. This is a fun beginner&#39;s taster class using powdered enamels on copper shapes. Your booking is private for you/your group only.&nbsp;You will select and prepare your copper shapes and then add layers of sifted coloured glass powders, firing each layer of each piece directly in a 800C kiln for a few minutes (safety equipment available but a steady hand is useful!). I will show you various options for adding some details eg: sgraffito, stencils, inclusions like glitter etc. and you can choose what colour combinations and finishes you&#39;d like to try. At the end you can add a jump ring and can take your pieces home with you. &nbsp;&nbsp;You will each be able to make 3 items of jewellery (either 3 pendants or 2 pendants and 1 pair of earrings). She will also demonstrate the plastic entrapment method she will be using for her workshop on Wednesday 6th November and show some finished examples. This will entail some layering of fabric, soldering and free machine embroidery and some ideas regarding ways of displaying the finished piece. 

Nikki taught art for 30 years to secondary school children, and having left full time work in 2016 , has been providing talks, demonstrations, summer schools, workshops to schools, groups and societies. She is a member of various art and textile groups.
She exhibits her work widely and has written a number of articles for both magazines and online sites. She is based in Cheshire and specialises in mixed media textile pieces, taking inspiration from a variety of sources and particularly interested in the way societies created a series of visual symbols to represent the things which were important to them. She investigates myths, legends, stories and beliefs. She is also inspired by art, architecture and artefacts.

In this course we will be combining my passions of Qigong and Breathwork to help bring us into balance so we can move though Autumn into winter full of peace and vitality.
Why Qigong and Breathwork?
Qigong is breathwork (Qi is Breath), it is an amazing way of opening and clearing the body, of making space for our healthy energy to flow. It allows us to stay relaxed and receptive without forcing or pushing. It is easy to learn and naturally attuned to your individual body and how it wants to expand, release and recharge.
Breathwork is simply bringing our conscious attention to our breath and is one of the most powerful ways we have to change our state at any given moment. In the course i will introduce you to eight different breath techniques to help you to breathe better. Commit to just 10mins a day and you’ll be amazed at the results you can achieve.
