This is a space for poetry, short stories and nature photography. You’ll also find articles about matters close to my heart such as green living, feminism and how to grow as a writer. My Creative Work… My creative work is often lyrical, inspired by the natural world, the darkness and beauty of the everyday and in search of women’s liberation. I’m currently working on my debut poetry pamphlet The Isolation Hospital (© LA@Mantimoon). This delves into themes such as isolation, feminine identity and exploration of our inner world. On occasion I’ll be posting from this upcoming pamphlet to give you sneak peeks of what I’ve been up to. Regular Features… I’ll be sharing features such as my ‘Haiku of the week’ and ‘Photo of the week’. Both are designed to inspire your own writing, aid quiet reflection and capture the joy of the present moment. You can also find my creative responses to weekly, creative challenges set and sent to my inbox by social enterprise 64 million artists: #TheWeeklyChallenge. Other features will include documenting my eco journey as I strive to go green and embrace green living. I’ll share top eco tips and eco field trips I’ve been on which help me reconnect with the natural world. In addition, I’ll be posting eco poems and letting you know about personally tried and tested eco friendly product alternatives. Feminism, Writing & Short Stories… You can also read articles on how to grow as a writer and the vital, evolving feminist movement. This will include thoughts about key feminist writers, feminist poetry and life posts about the development of my feminism. I’ll write about writing as therapy, how to find writing inspiration and share my thoughts about the work of exceptional writers. Watch this space for flash fiction and excerpts of short stories delving into the world of magical realism. Driven by complex characters, each story provides a delicate balance between the darkness and beauty of the everyday.

Emma Decent is based in the north west of England and has been writing and performing for over 15 years. Emma’s latest project is I Don’t Know What I’m Supposed To Be Doing, a new autobiographical show about herself and her mother. Her first solo show was Beyond Dreams of Aberystwyth was developed in 2013 with support from the Arts Council of England. The Show toured since 2013 and the story also unfolds as an Online Book which you can read in full as 20 Chapters on this website. Emma’s Poetry & Spoken Word includes raw, funny and vibrant performance poetry and prose. She has appeared at open mics all over the country and been guest poet at events in Manchester, Preston, Wakefield and beyond. She was chuffed to have her first ever slam win at the famous Uptown Poetry Slam at the Green Mill, Chicago in 2010. In Spring 2014 Emma qualified in Preparing to Teach in the Life-Long Learning Sector. She delivers workshops in performance and creative life-writing to accompany her shows where she encourages others to tell their stories. Emma also writes freelance journalism from time to time, and writes a Blog here, where she (occasionally) documents her on-going creative journey. Previous work includes Magic Words, a popular spoken word night Emma ran and hosted in Todmorden in 2012. In the 1990’s Emma was a lively participant on Manchester’s queer theatre and cabaret scene, and was co-writer and producer of Manchester’s fondly remembered queer pantos Snow White and the 7 Dubious Stereotypes and Little Red 30-Something and Her Queer Adventures in Wonderland at the Green Room in 2002 & 2004. Hosted by Gabby Logan and Sanchez Payne, we’re putting on an epic showcase of live performance featuring Corinne Bailey Rae, Simon Armitage and LYR, The Orchestra and Chorus of Opera North, Graft, Inder Goldfinger, Testament, Jamie Jones-Buchanan, Denmarc Creary and many more still to be announced. Everyone is invited. You just need to get creative to get your ticket. Because for our Year of Culture we’re waking the artist in all of us.

Tell us a story in black ink or charcoal. Tell us story with your whole body or just your index finger. Tell us a story with puppets made from leaves or tin cans or your dad’s old socks. Tell us a story with juggling balls and wear the gold mask you made or paint your face blue. If you’re a dancer or a photographer or a nurse or a plumber, we’d love to share a cake and make stories with you. We’re mostly playwrights who run creative arts workshops for everyone in Birmingham. As well as writing plays, we write poetry, make masks and puppets, and teach some circus skills as well. We established Windswept Workshops because we want to tap into the creativity that thrums at the heart of Brum’s community to make performing arts a part of everyone’s everyday lives.

Bison Arts Collective is a community of artists who come together to make and share original work with audiences and to create opportunities for artists to practise & perform. Theatre is at the heart of Bison but, as well as staging short plays & new writing shows at fringe theatres, we also put on evenings of music, poetry & comedy, and we’ve produced the pilot episodes of indie film projects & audio dramas. We are currently running a monthly play reading group too, "Shakespeare Sessions” at the Theatre Deli bar & café at Leadenhall Street.

Working with inspiring people and organisations, we run regular live events and artist development programmes across the country. Through our Book a Poet scheme, we can help you find the best visiting artists for your workshops and events. We produce work in collaboration with other charities and organisations, including libraries, prisons, and housing associations. We believe that working collaboratively helps ensure that unheard voices become heard. Tessa’s PhD explores the social relations of property, community rights and assets of community value, through an evaluation of the Community Right to Bid. Her research came from the bedrocks of property rights and the commons. Unearthing the literature of the commons, she was fascinated to discover the work of John Clare (see his poetry on the enclosures). Having spent the first two years of her life in Helpston, sharing a place of origin with Clare, Tessa felt it confirmed her destiny to rediscover our commons and uncover modern day enclosures.

Learning Through the Arts (LTTA), is a social enterprise which works within the community to promote learning, creativity and skills development through the Arts. Learning Through the Arts promotes a culture of life long learning. We seek to develop, nurture creative talents by providing training, organising workshops using all forms of creative arts as medium of instruction. Our workshops cater for adults and young people, and are run in a small friendly group which allows participants to learn at their own pace, but most of all allows them to explore the arts whilst making new friends and developing social skills. Most of our work is project based and therefore allows for flexibility in participation and meeting individual needs.

We work with groups of young people teaching them how to write and deliver performance poetry, building their communication skills, confidence and resilience to exploitation. We focus and help identify the positive aspects of their lives, writing about what they love, what they're grateful for and what their dream life looks like. We use various different writing techniques and templates to get them active and involved. We also write as a group or as individuals depending on the size of the workshop and the group's preferences. Our workshops build confidence, aspirations, public speaking and creative writing skills. The stronger our communication the stronger our communities.

Founded in 2008 as a Summer course, Yourstage Drama has grown and now additionally offers Easter courses and term-time Wednesday classes. Yourstage offers its bespoke courses and classes to children and young people from 3 to 16 years, inspiring them to grow in confidence through creative drama and performance. We have a highly talented team of staff at Yourstage from varied backgrounds, bringing with them a wealth of experience and boundless enthusiasm! Yourstage Drama offers fantastic Wednesday and school holiday drama classes for 3 to 18 year olds. Each course ends with a lively show packed with drama scenes, poetry, song and dance, where every child is encouraged to shine in the area they want to. ‘My son has loved every second.’ C.
