UHI Outer Hebrides is a centre for learning and research with local, regional, national and international reach. The College was established in 1953 within Lews Castle, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis and was originally titled Lews Castle College to reflect this. It began as a provider of technical training in seamanship but since then has diversified to provide a varied curriculum at its main campus and a number of learning centres throughout the Outer Hebrides. In 2011 it became part of The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) which saw a huge opportunity to extend the reach of the college and the courses and teaching it was able to offer. The College is of great importance to the local community across the Outer Hebrides offering local access to informal and formal education and training, contributing to making the islands attractive as a play to stay, live and work – both for those wishing to stay on the islands and those wishing to come to the islands. The College plays a role in working in partnership with stakeholders to support our local economy and communities.

The Story Kitchen is a research-informed writing programme for primary schools. Designed to improve writing motivation, skill and attainment, the programme contains a strong direct teaching and deliberate practice element, with a focus on how to write, craft and expand sentences and texts. The course explores a research model of writing and how this can be aligned to Curriculum for Excellence, as well as a consideration of Cognitive Load Theory and its implications for writing in the classroom.

Shinrin-yoku (or forest bathing) means ‘bathing’ all the senses, whilst walking slowly in the forest. When taking in the forest atmosphere like this, the brain naturally switches off from the ‘sustained directed attention’ of life’s daily pressures. Shinrin-yoku is restorative, both mentally and physically, like a bath. Walking in the forest in this way is not like hiking in the woods, nor indeed does it involve collecting or recording information and images like a naturalist or for social media. Where does Shinrin-yoku come from? Shinrin-yoku (森林浴) originated in Japan. The term was coined by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in 1982. Japan’s Forest Agency invested $4 million to study forest bathing and set up the ‘International Society of Nature and Forest Medicine’.

Apprenticeships and Training for the Care SectorCLC began offering education services as a training provider in 2001. During this time CLC has gained a reputation as a successful, flexible and supportive provider of traineeships and apprenticeships. Funded by the Education and Skills Funding Agency, and rated as ‘GOOD’ by Ofsted in May 2016. CLC actively promote partnerships with employers, schools, academies, colleges, local authorities and Job Centre Plus to offer high quality industry based apprenticeships. CLC are passionate about building great relationships and pride ourselves on being adaptable to employers needs. We continue to build and invest in our services, products and apprenticeships, to ensure employers have well trained staff, delivering an excellent service which provides social and economic benefits to both individuals and the wider society.

Glamorgan Voluntary Services (GVS) is an independent charity and has a flourishing membership of voluntary and community organisations active in the Vale of Glamorgan. We help to improve the quality of life of people and communities by supporting volunteers, volunteering opportunities and voluntary groups. GVS delivers an array of quality services to meet the needs of voluntary groups. We are a one stop shop for the voluntary sector. We champion best practice throughout voluntary organisations so that they excel in delivering their aims and objectives. GVS empowers voluntary groups, providing many channels of engagement and quality services to enable them to excel at serving their communities. Our role is to provide information, advice and guidance on all aspects of volunteering for both volunteers and recruiting organisations. Our expert services help to provide a platform for a vibrant and robust voluntary sector.

Dance & Movement Specialist Over 25 years as dance, movement and therapy specialist. Originally trained in dance in the U.S going on to manage one of the top New York dance studios. As a 10 dance finalist (Ballroom & Latin) 3 years running, gained top teacher award for training students with disabilities to competition level. However in 2003 I was told I would be wheelchair bound within five years due to a serious back problem. It was then that I discovered the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® along with my knowledge and previous training was able to have complete recovery. With both this profound practical and emotional experience, I feel I am perhaps uniquely placed to help others looking for pain relief or rehabilitation. Using massage, movement and the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® as my building blocks I draw on a wide range of techniques from Orthopaedic massage to Somatic movement, Myofascial Release to Structural Integration as a means to bring balance and equilibrium into under-pressure physiques. My keenest guiding principle is to assist clients to tap into their bodies own intelligence and ultimately help themselves. With an academic background that also embraces Business and Personal Coaching, I enable individuals, businesses and organizations to overcome the real and imagined blocks to the realisation of full potential by preventing and treating stress and physical problems, modifying personal and collective perceptions and removing limiting beliefs.
