The syllabus, along with the training provided, has been commended by industry professionals and has led students to progress to many leading performing arts establishments in London, France, Germany and Italy, and the Juilliard School in New York. UKTheatreSchool is an independent performing arts academy that bridges the gap between drama clubs and further education performing arts establishments. Founder, Lizanne Thomson, noticed a clear gap in the education system to provide the proper training for young people looking to advance in performing arts. UKTheatreSchool opened as an independent drama and musical theatre school within the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD), now known as The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS). Due to increasing popularity and growth, the school expanded into its own specially designed premises and established itself as a charity to ensure performing arts could be fully inclusive. UKTheatreSchool is ideally situated at 4 West Regent Street within the most beautiful listed building in the centre of vibrant Glasgow and is a two-minute walk from Glasgow Central and Glasgow Queen Street train stations. UKTheatreSchool students enjoy special elements exclusive to this particular academy. Students have continued success in the theatre, film, radio and TV industries due to working with qualified, experienced tutors from the performing arts industry and the network of people connected with UKTheatreSchool. These difficulties often do not reflect an individual’s cognitive abilities and may not be typical of performance in other areas. Dyslexia is independent of intellectual ability. The impact of dyslexia as a barrier to learning varies in degree according to the learning and teaching environment, as there are often associated difficulties in the areas of: Auditory and /or visual processing of language-based information Phonological awareness Oral language skills and reading fluency Short-term and working memory Sequencing and directionality Number skills Organisational ability Dyslexia exists in all cultures and across the range of abilities and socio-economic backgrounds. It is a hereditary, life-long, neurodevelopmental condition. It affects up to 10% of the UK population at some level and can affect anyone of any age and background. Learners with dyslexia will benefit from early identification, appropriate intervention and targeted, effective teaching, enabling them to become successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens. From its origins in 1992, when the local housing association at that time allocated a tenement house to a group of residents who were keen to participate in the arts, Drumchapel Arts Workshop, (DRAW) has continued to hold a valued and valuable place in the local and wider community. Since those early days many developments and positive partnerships have evolved, and from our milestone achievement of obtaining charitable status in 2010, our recently established venue on the ground floor of a block of high rise flats offers an informal workplace in which those from the local community and beyond can express their creative potential. Originally DRAW was encouraged to seek funding through Urban Aid, and we are currently funded through GCC from an Integrated Grant Fund. Over the years a dedicated committee has worked to ensure a wide variety of interesting and successful programmes and projects are available to participants. The many statutory organisations and agencies with whom we have worked, including the NHS, occupational therapists, Momentum, Right Track and Careers Scotland continue to help us to open access to the arts and to widen the horizons of those who participate in the project. The sense of wellbeing, confidence and social integration which evolves from appreciating and sharing our cultural wealth is frequently acknowledged by our participants and we welcome and enjoy a diverse clientele.
