About Sumita Sumita is qualified as a Yoga Therapist with Yoga Biomedical Trust and as a Yoga Teacher with the British Wheel of Yoga. She is also a Reiki Master and Bioenergy Therapist. “For me yoga is not a destination… it is a journey” --- Sumita Sumita has been teaching yoga since 2002 and has been practising for even longer. She first became drawn to yoga when fighting her own long-term battle with back pain: she found that modern medicine could only do so much to help her and so, at the suggestion of her GP, she turned to yoga as an alternative therapy. So inspired was she by the simplicity of yoga and the way in which it helped to heal her back, she went on to study and qualify for the Teaching Diploma with the British Wheel of Yoga. Initially her objective was simply to gain more detailed knowledge to help her better manage her own health. However, it was only inevitable that this would lead to her actually teaching yoga for the benefit of others.

I was first drawn to the healing power of movement in 2008 during my undergraduate degree in Contemporary Dance. I studied therapeutic movement and its effect on emotion. I was lucky to have been invited to visit Kaagvere in Estonia, to volunteer at an institution described as a boarding reformatory school for girls. Many of the young people I encountered here had been exposed to past traumatic events in some cases severe life changing experiences and as a result many faced mental health challenges. It was very humbling to be witness to this short part of their healing journey during my stay in Estonia. I worked alongside a dance and movement therapist to lead daily movement, dance and breathwork as a way for these young people to express emotion, to forge safety amongst their peers and to ground themselves when triggered. I continued my professional training as a dancer for some years after graduating, but this experience stayed with me and very much influenced my journey to becoming a Yoga Teacher and later Yoga Therapist

I have extensive experience of working with children from 2-16 years with a range of speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). I studied to become a Speech and Language Therapist at Newcastle University and developed my enthusiasm for supporting children’s communication throughout the course. Since being qualified (2011) I have worked in the NHS in the North East and in Yorkshire, supporting children in the community, early years and school settings. I have also worked directly for schools supporting the individual needs of the children as well as leading on staff training and development in specific areas of Speech and Language. I believe that communication is a vital skill in order to participate in a range of activities of daily living. Everyone deserves the support required to enable them to communicate effectively. I have worked with children with a range of SLCN and have particular interests in supporting children’s early language, speech sound development and selective mutism.
