For twenty minutes, Keith was trapped in the vehicle and nobody stopped to offer comfort or help until an off duty nurse and fireman came upon the accident, provided first aid and alerted the EMS.

Camp Crusoe is the quintessentially British summer camp experience where campers feel connected, valued, challenged, and supported. We take having fun incredibly seriously and believe that as modern childhood is all too short we must help our kids make the most of every moment of it. While school work is a vital part of our children’s development, so too is holiday time: Camp Crusoe is very much a fun and adventurous camp and not a summer school! We are the perfect size. There are plenty of opportunities to make new friends with no more than 80 campers per session. We know every camper by name, what interests them, if they need extra support or just an open stage to shine. Over the course of camp, community bonds are forged that last well after campers return home, sometimes a lifetime. Having seen first hand how our American cousins get it so right when it comes to summer camps, we feel it is essential that every child has the opportunity to get away from home each year and enjoy a new environment, testing themselves, trying new things and making new friends, all while having fun in the great outdoors. Too much time seems to be spent cooped up with electronic gadgetry of one sort or another when there is so much fun to be had outdoors, playing with other kids in a safe and controlled setting. Our extensive program of activities from water-sports to drama, archery to photography, appeal to every type of child, offering the opportunity for each camper to grow in confidence, improve their decision making skills and maybe discover a new lifelong hobby. We don’t try to cram too much in and allow just the right amount of time for campers to hangout, make new friends and play together. We are a small, independent camp run by a close-knit team of friends and family who are committed to enriching children’s lives. The core group have many years experience working with children both on summer camps and in the classroom, and are supported by a highly trained and motivated team of camp counsellors, many of whom have worked at camp before and are planning a career working with children. Camp Crusoe is about allowing children the time and space to be exactly that - children. Fun and personal development is our ultimate aim, but we also know from experience how much children learn at camp, both about themselves and about being part of something larger than them. Our company was started by a group of instructors who wanted to do something different: focus on smaller, more responsive classes, and provide important, but less popular and underserved courses. As well, one of our key goals was to provide a training environment for students to learn at their own pace. Things have evolved over time. We have taught courses that are near and dear to the hearts of our instructors, and have allowed instructors to develop and perfect their courses and teaching skills. Along the way we tried not to reinvent the wheel. We’ve become certified Canadian Red Cross training partners and work with the Canadian Safety Council to train our defensive driving, babysitting and home alone courses. We maintain high standards by having actual teachers help do the training. Our director of training has 2 Masters of Education degrees. Early on we realized that there was a need for people to be able to acquire their certifications or licensing in many fields. This led us to becoming a partner with Prometric, a world leader in technology-enabled testing and assessment solutions. We have thus created a computer lab to allow for a secure proctored environment. We went one step further and started another lab for others.

Located in West Sussex, I work in London, Brighton and surrounding areas. My days are spent nourishing, advising, educating and supporting clients on obtaining healthier and happier lifestyles. Annually, I take clients abroad to ‘cleanse’ body and soul. One of my cleanse locations is Gozo, a rustic island off Malta. This is the perfect location for taking time out in a supported and empowering environment. In 2022, I worked with the Wild View Retreat team in Portugal on a juice fast week of health rejuvenation. It was wonderful. I am thrilled to be joining them again for 4 weeks of cleansing in 2023.

The research arm of The Griffin Institute is working on two areas of potential benefit to people living with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) by creating a replacement bowel tissue for transplantation and by developing an in vitro platform for evaluating candidate drugs for the treatment of those patients who are not suitable for surgery. Our tissue engineering approach could also be used to treat other bowel diseases including reconstructive surgery after cancer removal. Approximately 50% of patients with Crohn’s disease and 20% with Ulcerative Colitis (UC) will require life-changing surgery that involves removal of part of the bowel resulting in complications with stool frequency, malnutrition and infections. As a proof of concept, we will grow stem cells on a biological inert scaffold in the laboratory to optimise the conditions for seeding the patient’s own stem cells for eventual transplantation. Use of the patients own stem cells avoids immune rejection. This proof of concept will lay the foundation for translational studies and eventual clinical trials for the management of UC and other bowel conditions in humans. We also hope that this work will lead to the development of a 3D model where the model tissue populated with healthy cells will be used to better understand the natural progression of UC for the purposes of testing interventions for early stage disease.
