Leicester Fencing Club originated from a merger between Huncote FC and Granby Halls FC in June 1989. The club was then known as the Granby Hall FC until it was no longer possible to continue fencing at the venue. Both Steve Wright and Jim Amberton had gone to Alderman Newton school at what is now Leicester Grammar School, Peacock Lane. They approached the headmaster to see whether to have fencing again on the site. Allowing his pupils free coaching, the club moved venue to the school premises. As the Club grew in size it was decided that we would have to find a larger venue. The City of Leicester School in Evington (formally Leicester City Grammar School for Boys) already had a history of fencing there, so the club moved again in 1992 and due to the change of venue a new name was required. CLUB ‘X’ was suggested but was thrown out for being too silly and finally the Leicester Fencing Club emerged from the ashes. The Deputy Head Master of the School (Alan Rudge) supported the move and growth of the Club at the School. We continued fencing there for five years but again had to move this time due to security reasons. Another venue was sought and we approached Aylestone Leisure Centre. They accepted us with open arms and the rest has been, as they say, history. The club not only looks after Foil, the club’s main weapon, but now Sabre and Epee are coached. The club provides beginner groups for youth and adults which are structured to the British Fencing Association’s Achievement Awards Scheme, all provided by a well-trained and qualified coaching team. We also support our more experienced members with weekly sessions available for further education towards higher grades or simply a safe environment to have a bit of fun. Our sessions run on Tuesdays for Foil (and Epee where in demand) and Fridays for Sabre Cadets (under 18s). Both groups meet from 7pm until 9pm during term times and occasionally run during the half term breaks and summer holiday, dependent on availability of coaches. So how can we define what the Traditional arts are? For me they must be developed in China this might seem obvious but I remember some years back a guy in the UK telling me that his style is tradition and it was developed by an English guy 25 years ago so its now traditional! For me this is nonsense firstly and foremost it should have been developed in China pre 1900 not in the UK, USA or anywhere else in the world. If you do Traditional Chinese Martial Arts you also have a linage that can be trace back though many generations to the founder, a clear family tree which represents the history of the style

We have also been awarded chartered status by the Chartered Institution for Further Education, the only organisation in the UK with royal assent to provide chartered status to FE providers. In the last three years, the College has opened two new world class campuses. The College-led MIRA Technology Institute (MTI) is located on the HORIBA MIRA Technology Park and is a learning partnership with HORIBA MIRA, Coventry, Leicester, and Loughborough Universities. Students and apprentices at this campus are building skills to support the disruptive technologies such as electrification and cyber security in the automotive industry. The College’s new Digital Skills Academy located on the Coventry University Technology Park represents part of our response to the fast-growing demand for digital skills in all industry sectors. Over the next year, we will be opening our Centre for Logistics Education and Research (CLEAR) at Magna Park, in partnership with Aston University and industry partner Wincanton. We will also be progressing our plans with Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council to move our award-winning restaurant and a new Digital Innovation Centre into Nuneaton town centre, and we will continue with the redevelopment of our Nuneaton campus into a 21st century digitally enable centre of teaching excellence.

We promote fine art and traditional photographic processes, through the provision of specialist knowledge and facilities, education and exhibitions. We started in 2011 with no place to call a home, but we managed to hold workshops and events at any place that would have us, and let us convert toilets and cupboards into darkrooms. Since then moved into accommodation and build a community darkroom, At the Manor House off Narborough Road. In April 2017, we were forced to vacated the Manor House and started to look for a new darkroom space. In December of the same year we opened our new darkroom at 376A Western Road – we spent a happy 2 years at Western Road, but time came to move on. We are now, as of the end of 2019, building a new darkroom space in the basement of the Methodist Church on Bishop Street. Look out for announcements on here and on Facebook and twitter of when we will be reopening. We’re a very social group and our evening sessions and workshops are very relaxed and informal, and a great place to come and learn new skills and techniques you might have never heard of.
