Hi Im Jess a ceramics artist from West Sussex, I live very close to the Sussex downs and to the sea ; I use aerial images of the downs and the surrounding landscapes looking at the changing seasons, this inform the my work at I make . I love corroded of surfaces, the contrast of rough and smooth line, patterns and texture that are found on stones, wood, glass and metal that has been weathered and broken down from natural erosion. I like to see how the landscape changes from month to month and the effects that farming have on the land , from a aerial view you can see the patterns made by man or nature in the ground and this is how i make up my patterns on the surface of the clay. My work take the form of decorative sculptural vessels for the home, wall hangings and bowls, my work is slab build out of a stoneware clay, I use underglazes and oxide on the surface of my work and fired to around 1260. I also offer teaching at me small pottery studio at Field Place Pottery in Worthing I run group workshop and one to one session,please get in contect if you would like to learn more. I started learning British Sign Language (BSL) at the age of 13, when my cousin Max was diagnosed as profoundly Deaf. The moment I started signing and became involved in the Deaf community; going to deaf clubs and volunteering at various charity events, I immediately felt a part of the community. Max is always at the heart of what we do at terptree. The daily barriers that he faces accessing the world acts as a deep-rooted motivation for me and our team. We truly care about about creating a world in which deaf people can exist equally to hearing people. My strong connection with the deaf community brings a real understanding of the issues that are faced. Firstly, our programmes are completely personalised to each candidate; no two people have the same experience because we only train between 20 and 30 trainees each year. Unlike the big university models where you would be one of 200 trainee teachers, we tailor the year to maximise your skills and you will therefore be better prepared to teach. We have our own supportive SCITT community, our own wellbeing programme and our own life coach. Secondly, because our trainees don’t have to attend University lectures, we have time to give them a bespoke enhancement programme running alongside the mainstream school placements. Our secondary trainees have the opportunity to teach in primary schools, pupil referral units, Special Educational Needs settings, work with CAHMS and teach in Sixth Forms. They also spend time at our local private schools to teach children with English as an additional language. Again, trainee curriculum design is tailored to maximise preparation. Thirdly, our programmes are competitively priced because we know graduates are already carrying huge university debts. We charge £7705 for QTS, as opposed to £9000, but we also give a free qualification for secondary trainees in addition to QTS so they leave as qualified Teachers of the PSHE Association [Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education].
