GeeLearn’s Social Mission GeeLearn’s social mission is centered around the delivery of science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM), and in particular science education, to children in developing OECD countries. Leveraging our strengths as an innovator in online learning design, development, delivering, and funding, we volunteer our skills and energy and partner with organizations to deliver STEAM education to children in these developing nations, starting with Colombia. In 2020, after an intense 5-year review, Colombia was welcomed as the newest OECD member. In 2021, GeeLearn Ltd. Partnered with the Children’s University at the University of EAFIT (Universidad de Los Ninos de Universidad Escuela de Administración, Finanzas Instituto Tecnológico) in order to volunteer its skills, knowledge, and talents to expanding the reach of Children’s University via digital learning throughout not only Colombia but the whole of Latin America. Background of GeeLearn Ltd. and its Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative: Online Science Education for Children: Colombia to Latin America 2020 – 2023 GeeLearn Ltd. is a social enterprise headquartered in The Melting Pot, “Scotland’s Leading Centre for Innovation”. This volunteer effort for EAFIT Universidad de Los Ninos on behalf of GeeLearn Ltd. represents a social good and comprises a major part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative over a period of three years. The CSR initiative was approved by the company’s board of directors in the Autumn of 2020. The goal of the company was to engage with an educational initiative to help serve children in a developing country that is a member of the OECD. Colombia became an official member of the OECD in 2020, the 37thcountry to do so in the organization’s 60-year history. The directors of GeeLearn Ltd. have identified 6 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that its volunteer cooperation with EAFIT’s Universidad de Los Ninos touches upon and will help Colombia achieve. Creating Awareness Plastic in our oceans is a huge environmental and health problem. Reducing plastic from our everyday lives will help reduce the need for and cost of recycling. This is important because recycling streams are not correctly managed, and many are dysfunctional. We also need to correctly dispose of our plastic and other unwanted items, choosing to reuse, repurpose or give it away. Keeping plastic out of our oceans (and our food chain) is a big issue which is why I organise beach and underwater clean ups wherever and whenever I can. I also enjoy visiting schools to give presentations that include short videos about marine life, and coral reefs. Plus, we discuss the different types of plastic, how it is affecting the environment and how we can all try to ‘Say No To Plastic’. The main objectives of the Cooperation Programme are to: promote an integrated system of research, education and training, information and documentation in the domain of the science and engineering of complex systems, contribute to the aims of global development by taking into account its social, economic and cultural dimensions and to this end, make the science and engineering of complex systems accessible to all, in order to get the relations between science, engineering, politics and ethics to evolve towards a sustainable development, contribute to a research and education of the highest quality in the domain of the science of complex systems, promote the development of integrated knowledge and integrated models of complex systens in order to bridge the gap between science and engineering, promote a lifelong personalised education for all in the science of complex systems as well as in integrative and predictive sciences — including the integrative and predictive science of personalised education for all — at all levels, contribute to an education and training in citizen cyber-science, open to all, independently of previously achieved academic levels, respectful of the diversity of social and cultural environments, genders, religions or ways of life. In 2021 we grew and harvested 1 acre of flax, in 2022 we will grow 2 acres of flax. Our aim is to establish a commercial flax growing social enterprise that is environmentally responsible. Eventually we aim to develop an integrated ‘grow, process, spin, weave and sell’ social enterprise involving local small farmers and creative enterprises in Plymouth and Cornwall linking the city to the surrounding countryside and vice versa and providing sustainable and long term employment and training opportunities in the these areas. The ultimate aim is to reintroduce commercial flax and high quality linen production to South West UK, find innovative solutions to the problem of pollution and environmental damage and provide jobs for the local economy, linking rural areas with towns in Cornwall and the city of Plymouth.
