The Engineering Biology Interdisciplinary Research Centre provides a hub for anyone interested in Engineering Biology at the University of Cambridge, including researchers, commercial partners and external collaborators. Engineering Biology is an emerging field which applies engineering principles to the design and modification of living systems. The University of Cambridge has been an important and early contributor in this area. The Engineering Biology Interdisciplinary Research Centre was established in 2013 with the support of the Schools of Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences and Technology to bring together related activities across the university and within the community. Academic leadership of the IRC is provided by the Steering Committee, and supported by the IRC Coordinator who works with researchers and external partners to implement IRC activities. The major aims of the IRC are to: Provide a hub of interdisciplinary exchange for all those interested in Synthetic and Engineering Biology at the University of Cambridge, from researchers and students to industrial partners and policy makers. Promote interdisciplinary collaborations across the University through regular events and seed funding competitions. Facilitate funding applications in the field of Synthetic and Engineering Biology Initiate academic-industrial partnerships across the IRC Research Themes. Explore open technologies for innovation, widening participation in novel IP practices and business models for tools related to Synthetic and Engineering Biology. Explore the wider social context of GM technologies at the local and global level, particularly responsible innovation for sustainability and conservation.

The Ethical Education Enterprise CIC was established to provide high quality and meaningful training to people in the local communities of the Greater Manchester area. Here at Ethical Education, we pride ourselves on creating a learning environment that offers each student an individual pathway. Working with local organisations, we support staff to develop their skills through accredited qualifications and bespoke training which, in turn, enhances local sustainability. We are currently working with young people aged 14yrs + to provide additional support alongside school, focusing on their individual attributes and interests. We also work with adults who are looking to progress in work or with barriers to work. Experience has shown us that, in reality, most people simply want meaningful work in their lives and equally meaningful social relations that come as part of being included in the wider working world. We believe that an intrinsic, if not critical part of helping people to achieve their aims is to develop productive relationships with all like-minded organisations such as third sector partners, education providers, support organisations, social housing providers and employers. We therefore can develop positive transitional pathways to ensure our learners are trained to a level which enables them to confidently progress or enter into productive, meaningful and sustainable employment. Taking a person-centred approach, we aspire to produce positive outcomes for all individuals we work with, but also for employers and society, as we believe each are mutually complimentary and achievable given the right approach.

From our workshop in Inverness, Scotland, we hand make custom and bespoke lamp shades, soft furnishings and interior decor items. We have customers across the world as well as around the corner. We use a range of different fabrics and materials to make our lampshades, cushions, and other interior soft furnishings including Harris Tweed, 100% wool fabrics, cotton, velvet and silk. We can customise our lampshades and soft furnishings in both size and colour to suit our clients’ requirements and to compliment their interior decor. Lucy Wagtail light shades are available in a variety of shapes such as the round drum, tall and round cylinder, oval, square, empire and French drum. All lampshades are available in sizes from 15cm up to huge, oversize lamp shades of up to 1m in diameter. We have now also introduced recyclable lampshade board as an eco-friendly option. Sustainability is important to us and we encourage the re-use and upcycling of lampshade frames, some of which are quite irreplaceable and lovely! We often refurbish lampshade frames that we have sourced ourselves and offer lamp shade refurbishment as a service. Woodwork and design have been lifelong interests of mine. My introduction to woodwork was with my father in his workshop at home. I studied woodwork, together with metalwork with Ted Mills in Maidstone and had regular lessons from Chris Hoad our local village carpenter in Marden, Kent. Woodwork runs in the family, I inherited my great grandfather’s tools and the workbench – a number of which which I use. I draw inspiration from many sources: the Design Museum is a particular favourite, but skilled work is all around. Recently I took part in a ‘Build a Tiny House’ course at the Centre for Alternative Technology. Their commitment to sustainable living is particularly important for me.I attend courses, exhibitions and trade shows regularly to keep up with the latest trends and developments. I established WoodWorks in September 2016. Our approach is practical, and we put our clients’ priorities first – be they design, practicalilty, affordability, aesthetic or sustainability. Wood is a wonderful material, flexible, strong and incredibly versatile. Most things are possible. If you’ve got a project in mind and want to find out whether and how it will work, I’d be happy to talk it over with you. In September 2020 I established Woodworks Learn, the teaching arm of the business. This was long an ambition of mine, using my background in teaching, coaching and informal community learning. I find immense pleasure helping people to develop their skills and to complete projects.
