As a child protection lawyer, and latterly a trainer, I work to empower professionals so you spend less time worrying about that Child Protection Conference or Strategy Meeting. Over the last 15 years working in the family justice sector, I have seen how amazing senior leads come under intense scrutiny when they are working alongside children’s social care. As a child protection lawyer, and latterly a trainer, I work to empower professionals so you spend less time worrying about that Child Protection Conference or Strategy Meeting. I founded the Safeguarding Association after working with so many professionals who were amazing at what they did but felt unsure about their role within the various child protection procedures and court processes. Their lack of knowledge was impacting their confidence when giving their opinions in meetings or at court. After working with lots of senior safeguarding leads like you, I realised that what they all needed was the same thing – understanding how to navigate the maze which is the child protection process and court system. The maze of processes is talked about in all safeguarding training. But knowing about it and working effectively within it are very different issues. I love sharing my experience and knowledge and there’s nothing more satisfying than knowing I have been able to remove some of that mystery so as to allow you to feel confident and empowered to fully protect those young people you work with. You should feel confident in your internal safeguarding processes, and how the systems works so you can be secure in your handling of complex child protection cases. We all need some downtime, when I’m not working, I spend mine with my husband and our golden retriever, Sam.

The Autism Training Network was established following an identified need for quality support and training for a range of settings across the UK. Our clients range from health and social care settings, to charity and voluntary organisations through to businesses and public service companies. Over the last decade there has been an increase in the research and development of our understanding of neurodivergence conditions such as Autism, Tourettes and ADHD (to name but a few!) and with this increase, there are more and more individuals who are self-identifying or who are being diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This left a massive shortfall in the knowledge and understanding of how to support someone or even just be comfortable around neurodivergent people. We believe that everyday is an opportunity to learn and our team are consistently undertaking further learning and training to enhance their knowledge and experiences to better facilitate training and learning opportunities. Our team has worked with some incredible people in the UK and the feedback that we have received has been testament in itself that we are supporting to make a change to how neurodivergence is seen. The Institute of Family Therapy (IFT) is an independent charitable body established in 1977 for the purpose of promoting and developing systemic practice in the UK. As such we have led the field for over 40 years and have pioneered much of the practice and research development in family therapy. In addition to our solid foundation training, we are unique in the country in having the only Child Focused Systemic Practice course which focuses specifically on the meaningful engagement of children in family work.

Abi’s background is in youth work and she has collaborated with a number of organisations to develop participatory approaches to working with vulnerable adolescents. She has worked with The International Centre: Researching Child Sexual Exploitation, Violence and Trafficking at the University of Bedfordshire, supporting specialist social care teams in Wigan and Rochdale to implement strengths and participatory approaches to Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE). Abi co-wrote training for these teams with Dr Camille Warrington on behalf of Research in Practice. At the University of Bedfordshire, Abi also worked on the LEAP project (2015-17) with Dr Kate D'Arcy. Abi wrote training tools for young people and professionals across Europe, in order to respond to young people's experiences of sexual violence and to support efforts to prevent sexual violence. The three-day youth facilitator training programme is called “Life-skills, leadership and limitless potential" (LLLP). All these programmes provide knowledge and tools to apply participatory approaches to practice with young people.
