To lead change by nurturing the skills needed to create, restore, maintain and improve places for wildlife. To influence behaviour through our motivational outdoor experiences of the natural world and wildlife. To change lives by connecting people to nature and thereby improving their health and wellbeing. Working together We lead change by working with others to form collectives that plan, resource and deliver sustainable community-based projects that benefit people and wildlife. We influence behaviour by planning and delivering courses and workshops about ecology, conservation, countryside skills and rural crafts that are of community interest. We change lives by creating, restoring, maintaining and improving habitats for wildlife and conserving natural green places and historic landscapes for people. Growing wild Wilding is a concept of making space for nature and encouraging wildlife back to the landscape. It is restoring natural processes to our countryside, reviving degraded habitats, reintroducing depleted or missing species and allowing our ecosystems to become naturally self-regulating again. Nature is an intricate web of interactions that enrich our lives, help nourish the natural environment and give our planet a greater capacity to cope with human impact. We encourage our learners to connect with nature by growing wild plants and making space for wildlife in their gardens and green spaces. Learning outdoors We promote outdoor learning as a way to discover, engage with and learn about the natural world and wildlife. Our learning experiences will nurture your skills and help you change behaviours through direct engagement with the natural world. We help communities, groups, families and individuals reflect about themselves, learn about each other and connect with nature. The motivating experiences you have with us will be a catalyst for your learning, personal development, health and well-being. Our promise is... " To strive to be global citizens by being aware of and understanding nature, the wider world and our place in it. As individuals and teams we will be active in our local communities, and work together and with others to make peoples lives smarter, healthier, safer, fairer and greener."

Reading

The Museum of English Rural Life is owned and managed by the University of Reading. We use our diverse and surprising collection to explore how the skills and experiences of farmers and craftspeople, past and present, can help shape our lives now and into the future. We work alongside rural people, local communities and specialist researchers to create displays and activities that engage with important debates about the future of food and the ongoing relevance of the countryside to all our lives. We were established by academics in the Department of Agriculture in 1951 to capture and record the rapidly changing countryside following World War II. The Museum is based on Redlands Road in a building originally designed by Sir Alfred Waterhouse in 1880 for local businessman Alfred Palmer, of the Huntley & Palmer biscuit company. The house then became St Andrews Hall of Residence in 1911, and in 2005 a modern extension was built onto the house for the Museum. The Museum was awarded £1.8million from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) in 2014 for the redevelopment of the galleries, reopening in October 2016. The redevelopment strengthens and renews our links with agriculture as well as enhancing our position in supporting engagement opportunities for students and academics across a wide variety of disciplines, nationally and internationally. The MERL and Reading Museum are currently in a strategic partnership as part of the Arts Council England National Portfolio 2018-2022. As Museums Partnership Reading we work together to provide cultural opportunities for Reading’s young people and diverse communities, through schools, volunteering, digital engagement and exhibitions. Introduction to Botanical Ink

By Airtily

Join artist Julie Galante for an afternoon of homemade botanical inks made from foraged plants and kitchen scraps. In 2023 Julie dove into ink-making, producing more than 300 inks from over 100 different botanical sources. In this three-hour workshop, Julie will share what she’s learned from all these inky experiments, giving you the skills and knowledge to create your own library of botanical colours. She'll share her core learnings, including the best ways to extract colours, the best plants to use, and how to preserve and store your inks. We'll also cover different ways of finishing your inks depending on how you'd like to use them. Please note this workshop will take place in Julie's Stockbridge studio, which is accessible via three flights of stairs. We will also spend part of the workshop foraging outside, weather permitting, so please dress accordingly. Tea and coffee will be provided.
