On behalf of the students, staff and governors we wish to welcome you to the website of The Trinity Catholic School. The history of the school can be traced as far back as 1844 when the Sisters of Mercy came to Nottingham and opened St Mary’s Elementary School and St Catherine’s Day and Boarding School on this site. Since then as the demands for the Catholic education grew within Nottingham so has the school, to the special place it is today educating over eleven hundred young people. The school is an active member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Multi-Academy Trust, along with the other twenty Catholic schools within Nottinghamshire. We are a Catholic school with the aim of developing our young people spiritually, socially and academically with Christ at the centre of our work. Our school motto, ‘Ad de Gloriam’ meaning what we do we offer to the glory of God, underpins the ethos of the school. This is developed further within our school mission statement: “To the Glory of God, we build our school on faith, love and respect” Academically we are consistently one of the highest performing schools within Nottingham City both at GCSE and A-Level. We ensure that all our students secure an appropriate next pathway in their education upon leaving Trinity, whether that be an apprenticeship, studying in our thriving sixth form or, following A-Levels, securing a place at a top university. Beyond the curriculum, we offer unrivalled opportunities in music, where all students take up an instrument, play in an orchestra and learn to read music. In sport, we are extremely proud of our offer and achievements particularly in football, netball, rugby and handball. We run a highly successful Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and have a rich programme of extra-curricular activities for everyone.

We, Ruth’s family, are left devastated by the sudden loss of a lovely mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, sister-in-law and friend. She leaves a huge, aching gap in all our lives and, we know, in the lives of so many others who were lucky enough to know her. We are grateful to all our friends for their thoughts and support now and in the difficult years ahead. Ruth will be remembered as the kind, funny, confident, vivacious, caring person she was and for all that she achieved in life. We also ask those who did not know Ruth please to respect our privacy, as we come to terms with our unfathomable grief, and to consider carefully how their words and actions might impact on others. As the many tributes to her from the broader school and Caversham community attest, Ruth cared deeply not just about academic results, but also about the general well-being and happiness of the pupils and staff whom she taught and led. Caversham Primary was a very happy school under Ruth’s leadership and, despite the many challenges that always go with the role of Head, she was happy there too. Ruth was a dedicated headteacher and an excellent teacher. She loved the pupils and the staff of Caversham Primary School and was very proud to have been its Head Teacher for 12 years and previously Deputy Head Teacher for four years. Ruth was a force for good in her life, and we want her to be a force for positive change after her death too. We would urge anyone who has been affected by her death to talk about their feelings and know that help is available. Karin Schamroth is a Specialist Speech & Language Therapist in Deafness, and creator of smiLE Therapy. She worked in the National Health Service in the UK for 30 years. For 20 years, with deaf babies, pre-schoolers, primary and secondary aged students for Whittington Health NHS (North London). She graduated with a BSc from Manchester University in 1984, and taught English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) for 4 years. She qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist in 1990 from City University. She has worked with Deaf children & young people, in a range of setting – units in mainstream schools (both Total Communication and Oral) and Deaf Schools (Frank Barnes School for Deaf Children, and Blanche Nevile School for Deaf Pupils). Her background in TEFL teaching, with its structured test-teach-test communicative approach, was invaluable in the development of smiLE. In addition, she was trained by Jenny Mosley in Quality Circle Time. This has had a significant influence on the group respect principles used in delivering smiLE Therapy. She was advisor for three MSc projects at City University on the effectiveness of the smiLE approach – Alton (2008), Lawlor (2009), Curtin (2018) and supported G. Medone with her MEd project at Birmingham University, School of Education, on Assessing smiLE Therapy’s relevance to young people with autism, unpublished (2015). She is currently clinical supervisor for a Clinical Doctorate Research Fellow (NIHR). Karin now works Independently, developing smiLE Therapy modules with adolescents and young adults and runs the company that trains professionals in smiLE Therapy. Karin has trained Speech and Language Therapists, Teachers of the Deaf, Special Needs Teachers, Mainstream Teachers, SENCOs, Occupational Therapists, Communication Support Workers and Special Needs Assistants, to use smiLE Therapy since 2008. Karin, together with Emma Lawlor, wrote the first smiLE Therapy book, published in October 2015 by Routledge Publishing
