We are honored to announce a NIS 50 million gift from the Kadas Family Charitable Fund to support the creation of an International Faculty Initiative of Global Climate Change, with an initial emphasis on marine and coastal ecology research. The largest one-time donation in the University’s history, the gift will be used to create a virtual community of scholars, spanning universities and research centers across the globe. I discovered that pollutants from everyday household rubbish can easily (and quickly) end up in our drinking water, and many of these pollutants are readily bought off the shelf in our local supermarkets. It made me really start thinking about what and how much I was throwing away. Then I became a mother! After the birth of my son, I became even more interested in how our environment, and the products that we use, could affect our health. I discovered that we are surrounded by an increasing range of toxins, carcinogens, and irritants in common use around the home, garden and workplace. Products we eat, breathed or put on our skin every day! I was horrified and decided that something had to change. So I started looking for solutions and GreenLifeOrganics began. I believe that our health and our environment are interlinked in ways that we will never fully understand, but if we strive to improve our environment, then there is a good chance that our health will benefit. And if we all make small changes towards leading a healthier and more sustainable life, then there is a good chance that our environment will benefit.

Just Space is an informal alliance of around 80 community groups, campaigns and concerned independent organisations which was formed to act as a voice for Londoners at grass-roots level during the formulation of London’s major planning strategy, particularly the London Plan. Everyone is affected by planning but the planning process is technical and often daunting for the majority of people, even though the issues themselves are readily understood: housing, green space, jobs, transport, pollution, and so on. The aim of Just Space is to improve public participation in planning, to ensure that policy is fairer towards communities – in a system dominated by the interests of developers. The Just Space Network brings together a wide range of groups, some with a London-wide remit (such as the London Tenants Federation, the London Forum of Civic and Amenity Societies, Friends of the Earth), others locally based community groups (such as Latin Elephant and Ward’s Corner Community Coalition). The Network also has links with some of the Universities in London (e.g. UCL, CASS and LSE) whose staff and students provide research that the network presents alongside their own grass roots evidence at London Plan hearings or in other contexts. We work by supporting our member groups and spreading information further afield. Groups collaborate and coordinate in making representations to planning authorities, share learning, research and experience through workshops and publications. As a result of this engagement people have come to understand how political these planning documents are and how much they influence many of the key issues that groups are focused on such as health inequalities, targets for relevant housing, progress on environmental issues and pitches for gypsies and travellers. Members of Just Space continue to monitor and expose contradictions in the London Plan, and other planning policy. Workers at ABP’s Port of Ipswich are plugging in to an e-bike trial scheme with Suffolk County Council. The council’s Way To Go Suffolk team, which helps people to travel sustainably, has launched a scheme for businesses where employees are encouraged to ditch the car and try out an electric bike free of charge. Employees can choose to trial commuting for a week at a time with some of the bikes, whilst others are used as pool bikes allowing staff to pop out at lunchtime for a break and some exercise. The Port of Ipswich is the first organisation to get involved with the scheme, having taken delivery of eight e-bikes for a trial period of three months. The bikes are supplied by e-bike rental provider Hurrecane. They have a range of around 50 miles and, other than punctures, are covered with a call-out service for any breakdowns and repairs. They are different to conventional bikes as they are powered by a battery to assist the rider, increasing the distance that someone can cycle. The council is initially looking to work with organisations that have at least 50 employees and are based in a large town environment. Established in 1997, The Mersey School of Anaesthesia (MSA) is principally concerned with preparing Trainee Anaesthetists facing their Primary & Final FRCA Examinations. Originally held within a Charitable Trust Accounts at Liverpool Heart & Chest and Aintree Hospitals, it was advised by the Trust Account Managers that it should be moved and run as an independent Charitable Company. In 2012 the MSA registered with the Charity Commission (Reg. No. 1149165). Income is invested back into the Courses that the MSA run and at the end of each Financial Year, any surplus income is donated to Research, Education and Patient Care charities, these mostly of an anaesthetic texture in the UK or used to support Volunteer Anaesthetists in various Charitable Ventures Abroad. Overall, by the end of March 2021, the MSA has donated a total of over £900,000 to such concerns, all of it by reason of candidates’ subscriptions to our courses and classes allied to the full support of those Anaesthetists, who contribute as Faculties to those Courses without expectation of recompense.
