Our Annual Exhibition is a showcase not only for its members but also for aspiring artists: with a history going back more than a hundred years, it is an opportunity for work to be seen alongside some of the best artists painting today, held at Mall Galleries in London. We also offer support and encouragement to emerging artists through our Education Programme with classes & workshops run by New English members. And we award two Scholarships each year. Historically, the New English Art Club was founded by a group of artists dissatisfied with the entrenched attitudes of the Royal Academy. They mounted their first show in 1886 including paintings by Clausen, Sickert and Stanhope Forbes. The club increasingly attracted younger artists, bringing with them the influence of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Many diverse styles of art have developed since its founding, adding richness and variety.

Hampshire Art Studio offers a range of exciting Art courses throughout the year. The idyllic position of this purpose built, fully equipped studio are hard to over state. The wooden framed, glass fronted building looks out over the chalk stream, River Dever, which in turn runs into the famous River Test. In addition to courses in the Studio, there are regular courses online, so you can benefit from expert tuition on the banks of a river, or without leaving home. Courses are run termly, for a few weeks, or as one-off workshops, and masterclasses. All these are led by encouraging and supportive tutors who are highly experienced, and eminent in their particular field.During the Summer months there are fortnights of themed workshops that run for one, two or three days. These offer an opportunity to explore something new, or as part of an exciting staycation.

My name is Denise Thompson/Coutu. I’ve been teaching art classes and giving parties for over 10 years. I love working with kids. I’m a mom, and have also had my own daycare. I also come from a family of teachers. I get great satisfaction from seeing my students grow, both in their skill level and their understanding of the arts. I grew up in Hudson, NH and studied mainly in Boston. My educational experience includes a Bachelors of Fine Arts from Tufts University; a Fine Arts Diploma from the Museum School in Boston (5 yrs), and Certificates in Graphic Design and Web Design from schools in Manchester, NH. I have been a graphic design professional for over 18 years. I worked in the art department in MA working with digital files and preparing them for press. I have also worked in the theatre industry in Boston, which was fun and exciting. My other professional skills include scenic painting, oil painting and drawing, sign making, jewelry making, clay work, mosaic making, sewing and cake decorating. I would love to teach anyone who is interested in learning the skills to make beautiful works of art. I’m now offering After School Care Program, Summer Classes, art classes and private birthdays or other party options. Please contact me to discuss dates you’d like to plan an event. Our first meeting of 2023 occurred Wednesday, Jan 11! Our guest artist demonstrating was Roxsane Tiernan. Roxsane Tiernan was born and raised in the Greater Vancouver area. She became an international educator teaching high school and marketing for the district in Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan and Mexico. She is a Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists showing in over 70 juried shows. She studied Applied Arts at Capilano College in the mid-seventies and started painting seriously in 2000 when she joined the FCA and Burnaby Artists Guild. She really likes the challenges of interpreting local nature using chigiri-e—Japanese torn paper collage. She gives workshops and lesson in this technique even in Finland or Manitoba. Roxsane joined the North West Collage Society which is centered in Seattle. Her work was featured on their posters and invitations. She has won several awards locally and internationally mostly for mixed media or chigiri-e pieces. My name is Barbara and I'm a graphic designer, art lover but foremost a mum of three wonderful children. We all love to draw and paint together, and try out new techniques and let our creativity flow. I've been drawing, crafting and painting with kids of different ages for many years and occasions, and I would love to see your little and older artist in one of my classes. Fostering creativity won't just increase a child's chances of becoming the next Picasso. It will also help to develop mentally, socially, and emotionally. Creating art may boost young children's ability to analyze and problem-solve in many ways. As kids manipulate a paintbrush, their fine motor skills improve. By counting pieces and colors, they learn the basics of math. When children experiment with materials, they dabble in science. Most important perhaps, when kids feel good while they are creating, art helps boost self-confidence. And children who feel able to experiment and to make mistakes feel free to invent new ways of thinking, which extends well beyond the craft room.
