We are an amazing special school and 6th Form with up to 150 students aged between 11 to 19 years old. Students are taught in classes of up to 12 individuals, supported by a teacher and normally at least 1 teaching assistant. Most new students join us in September in either Year 7 or Year 12 but we do admit young people into other year groups throughout the year where vacancies exist. Our students all have complex learning & additional needs (LAN) and all are supported by an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP) which is reviewed annually. The majority of students join us are operating at least 3 to 4 years below chronological expectations. Our students’ additional needs include global developmental delay, autism, ADHD / ODD/ADD, anxiety, OCD, sleep apnoea, cerebral palsy, visual or hearing impairment, dyspraxia/coordination difficulties, hydrocephalus, epilepsy, chromosomal abnormalities including Down syndrome, speech, language & communication difficulties. It is our explicit aim to facilitate every opportunity to help address our students wider ‘therapeutic’ needs. Whilst some of our students have some mobility difficulties, due to the split-level nature of our site we are unable to cater for young people in wheelchairs. We describe our young people as not disabled but differently abled. We have a highly dedicated, experienced and specially trained staff team committed to achieving the best possible outcomes for every young person. We believe in building a real and lasting sense of community and belonging – we are proud of being an especially welcoming school. Feeling safe and developing positive and trusting relationships are key to our students’ success. Securing our students’ wellbeing and positive mental health is central to our provision. We employ a multi-disciplinary approach in meeting the needs of our students and each individual is following their own personalised programme. We place special emphasis on partnership working (with parents, other professionals, Local Authorities, business / industry and the local community). Everything we do is designed to ensure positive & successful adult life chances for our students (not just ‘next steps’). The school is located in 21 acres of peaceful and beautiful woodland and we are proud of the high quality and well maintained learning environment we have created, including many specialist resources and teaching areas. Who we are and what we do Established in 1999, Surrey Lifelong Learning Partnership (SLLP) is a registered Charity. Each year we help between 600 and 800 people return to learn to gain new skills, qualifications and employment. We rely on a mix of income streams, including generating funds through our Bike Project social enterprise and securing grant funding for projects. Our vision: All within Surrey have the opportunity to re-engage in learning throughout their lives. Our mission: To work with partners to ensure that those, in Surrey and beyond, who have missed out on learning in the past, have opportunities to learn and to reach their full potential. We hold many different events, where members and potential members can get to know each other, and become involved in all sorts of interesting activities. As a charity that focuses on education and opportunities for women, we are a group of over 8,000 women in Surrey that work together for our common goals. Each WI in Surrey is a member of the Federation and they meet at least monthly to engage in a wide range of interesting activities, including clubs, groups and events. At monthly meetings members enjoy practical workshops and lectures. However, it is important that we also have the opportunity to engage outside of our individual WIs. So as a Federation, we aim to put on events in different parts of the county so that all members have the opportunity to attend. We have a presence at agricultural shows, hold workshops and have two countywide meetings each year in Dorking. Our wide variety of events ranges from literary lunches, a day out in London either for Christmas shopping or for a walking tour with a blue badge guide, fiendish quizzes, cream teas, fashion shows, down to learning new crafts such as portrait painting or willow weaving. Everything is possible and the members are encouraged to send in their ideas for the committees to consider for future events.

We were so proud when we opened the first pilates equipment studio, not only in Chorlton, but the only Pilates Studio in Manchester back in 2009. Although Pilates started to really take off in the UK around 15 years ago, the traditional Pilates studio complete with its unique Pilates equipment has taken much longer to make an impact in the North of England. But matwork is only scratching the surface of the full Pilates experience, to really get the full system as Joseph intended you need to come and visit us in our small Chorlton studio where we work (and play!) on the full system. Joseph Pilates designed the equipment himself and his exercises for the mat have evolved from the reformer and the other big pieces of equipment such as the cadillac, chair and barrel. Once you experience the studio equipment for yourself you begin to understand more fully how to get the most out of each exercise and you can then apply that to your mat work. For example in a mat class I often say “imagine that you have spring attached to your arms” – on the reformer and the cadillac you are holding onto those springs! By using the springs for resistance throughout the session you will feel the whole of your body working and really challenge yourself. The use of springs doesn’t just act to make exercises harder, it also can support you and is especially beneficial when trying to master rolling work.
