We have always been passionate about helping others and, during the pandemic, we saw the anxieties of parents trying to keep up with, and understand, their child’s learning. We could see what parents really wanted was support and guidance and we started to think how we could offer this through ‘Tutor Your Child’. We decided to put together a programme which will help and guide families through each school year for maths and English, nurture confidence and mental health as well as try and support any additional needs. ‘Tutor Your Child’ is an online subscription service for parents of children Reception to Year 6, to help with maths and/or English. Each week, parents receive a short video showing them what to teach and how to teach it, with supporting activities. By the end of the academic year, parents will have covered the skills within the curriculum with their child in small, manageable steps and been part of their child’s learning journey. There will be assessment opportunities along the way so they can keep track of their child’s progress. We are passionate about children’s mental health so ‘Tutor Your Child’ includes helpful advice through regular blog articles and access to our ‘Wellbeing Zone’; offering guidance for supporting children’s self-esteem and developing a positive attitude to themselves and others. We have been friends for many years with Maryanne having considerable expertise as a SENCO and Deputy Head and Sue spending many years working as a private tutor and teacher, and hope eventually we can grow ‘Tutor Your Child’ to help many families nationally. We are an independent, non-denominational charity providing holistic values-related education programmes for teachers and schools. With over 25 years of experience, we share our knowledge and experience so as to promote better outcomes for young citizens, both academically and as empowered, happy, healthy individuals who feel capable of fulfilling their true potential, whatever their starting points in life. Not only have we been supplying practical, personal development and wellbeing programmes for a generation of learners aged from 4 to 14 but we also provide training in Values Education, an element in the school curriculum that is becoming increasingly significant as the topic of values becomes ever more mainstream and as the understanding of how values affect and impact people’s thinking, decision-making, actions and wellbeing grows. The intense focus on academic outcomes during the past two decades has been at the expense of many children’s mental health and wellbeing, and this has brought into focus the urgent need for a shift in education practices towards rounded, whole-child development. This approach has always been central to our work. There are few opportunities for teachers during their initial teacher training and continuing professional development to learn about the role of values in our day-to-day lives and to appreciate how they can be proactively used to nurture and empower individuals to progressively gain character strengths, social and emotional skills and personal qualities that are essential for their happiness, health and capacity to maximise their talents and abilities. This is the gap we fill.
