Hi everyone, I am Debbie and I created and run the Elsa Support website. My motto is ‘Together we can make a difference’. One of the things I noticed very quickly when I was working in school was that there was a real lack of ELSA resources. I am a bit of a Google queen but even so it was difficult, without spending a huge amount of money on things, to find anything really suitable. I ended up writing my own planning and coming up with ideas and thought why not share them, that was the start of Elsa Support…… It is all about the BEES I love my bees and you might wonder why? Bees are: Busy, they work incredibly hard Work as a team always Social creatures and do communicate with each other Co-operate with each other for the same aim All have very different roles and divide their ultimate job between them all Create honey that feeds them, and us, they even store it for lean times Adaptable and do so when environmental factors change Bees work together for a common goal or aim, we can learn so much from them. They are the reason my very first ‘nurturing’ group was called ‘Busy Bees’. Well that and the fact I managed to buy some fabulous ‘bee cushions’! My vision for that first group was a group of children who belonged. We all know belonging boosts self-esteem. Feeling part of a community can have such an impact on children. Creating a group where children worked together as a team, who supported each other and socialised with each other. In fact, after the very first group I ran I overheard one of the very quiet and shy children organising for them all to meet up at playtime the next day. A major part of my role was helping children with social and emotional issues. It became a huge interest to me to try and break down barriers to learning. I am a big fan of group work and have written many interventions over the years which you can find on the website. I try to keep the cost of resources as low as I can because to me it is important that you do use them, but it is important to me that you can have some free resources to work with children, I know how difficult it is with school budgets. Every Friday I create something for free and share with you all. The website has grown from strength to strength and I have had many emails and messages to tell me how useful it has been to people setting out on the ELSA journey but also helpful to teachers, teaching assistants, learning mentors, counsellors and many other professionals. Back to the Bees and community My vision of my very first ‘nurturing group’ was based on Bees and my vision includes that for ELSA’s and other professionals working with children on social and emotional issues. Mental health awareness, quite rightly, is becoming a huge thing due to so many factors. I really wanted to create community amongst all those people working for the same aims. This is to support you in your role supporting children. Some ELSA’s/adults do work alone in school and just need a bit of support, a listening ear, reassurance and some kind words. Our main group on Facebook has nearly 3000 members, who are all so supportive of each other. It is a wonderful community of like minded people. We have a mentoring section where you can be paired up with another person if you feel you need that extra bit of support. I listen to you, I get involved in discussion, I suggest resources, I suggest ideas and I create resources for you. You tell me what you want, and I try my best to create it for you. Do join us, together we can make a difference! What is ELSA? An ELSA in a school is an Emotional Literacy Support Assistant. There is a recognised ELSA training course aimed specifically at Teaching Assistants in schools. Examples of things covered on the course are social skills, emotions, bereavement, social stories and therapeutic stories, anger management, self-esteem, counselling skills such as solution focus and friendship. To find out more about this course, contact the Educational Psychologists in your LEA and ask them if they are running one, if not ask them if it is possible for the future. Also check out neighbouring LEAs, they will sometimes take people out of their area to make up numbers. She taught her first Yoga class in 2008 and has 1000s of hours of teaching and training experience since then. She passionately specialises in Yoga & Massage for Women's Health - Womb Health, Fertility, Pregnancy, Postnatal &, peri/menopause years. She regularly teaches Yin & Hatha Yoga, Yoga in the Workplace, Children's Yoga and Yoga for Mental Wellbeing. I taught my first Yoga class Yoga in 2008 and founded Yogababe in 2010. I initially trained for 3 years (500 hours) with the British Wheel of Yoga whilst I was pregnant and caring for young children. Naturally I adapted my Yoga style to suit Conception, Pregnancy, Birth and the Postnatal period. I decided to train with with Uma Dinsmore Tuli in Well Woman Yoga Therapy to help me maintain equilibrium both in my personal journey and helping other women. I have now completed many hours of extra study and training since so I can share Yoga practices with you and help you on your journey.. "My Yoga is totally adaptable and changes to suit whatever life brings me - it has helped me through transformative times . I bring adaptability into my teaching - there is always a Yoga practice to be had, whatever life stage you are at - whether physical posture, meditation, pranayama, song..... I was introduced to Yoga as a child, as my mother was also a Yoga teacher. But it wasn't until my early twenties that I rocked up at a random class in London, on my office job lunch break. I began to feel truly at peace and at home in myself on the mat. "I always said, I would train to be a Yoga teacher if I was still unhappy in my office job at 30. In fact, it happened way before that. I spent time in ashrams in India whilst travelling - Auroville, Tamil Nadu and the Sivananda Ashram, Kerala - they both taught me how Yoga can be 'lived' and it became an intrinsic part of my life. After travelling, I started my teacher training course with Elaine Fletcher and i haven't looked back. Having children transformed my practice and helped me find solace and interest in the subtler Yoga practices. Stronger postures often felt 'not quite right' especially when my body felt like it was giving up, suffering from pelvic & back issues, fatigue & postnatal depression. I learnt a lot at that time and now I am passionate in adapting Yoga practices to suit every body and mind. I actively promote mental health and wellbeing as well as developing self-awareness. Over the years I have taught classes in numerous gyms, and Schools, and collaborated with organisations such as MIND, MS Society, CoastNet, NE Essex Primary Care Trust and Barnardos.... Define Fine has been created by a small but committed team of parents and professionals who have lived experience of school attendance difficulties. As DEFINE FINE: Parent Peer Support for School Attendance Difficulties we support our members who are struggling with school attendance difficulties and parent carers from our wider SEND and mental health networks. We provide peer support using our tried and tested resources and to help parents advocate for the support their children and young people need to be able to learn and achieve. We hope to build up our growing network of peer supporters, who we can train to use our guides for their own family and ultimately to then help other families experiencing attendance difficulties. Our resources and training are also available for professionals in Education, Health and Social Care. Empowering parents to be able to effectively work with professionals, should encourage not only earlier intervention, with much better outcomes, but also reduce the risk and impact of unhelpful, and unnecessary attendance prosecutions and social services interventions. It is vital that children, young people and their families receive appropriate support, and especially in cases where professionals insist children are “fine in school, “ all are clear as to how fine is actually defined. For us “fine in school” would mean that children are safe, healthy, happy and their needs are acknowledged and supported to be able to access suitable education and learn.

Communicators Training Associates Limited is an independent training provider based in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham with training facilities on site. We also deliver at outreach centres in Spennymoor, Crook and Darlington. In addition to the programmes we support, we provide ‘drop in’ sessions and host ‘information days’ at all our locations and more recently have launched our ‘virtual learning platform’ to enable everyone to learn from home. We have built an excellent reputation for giving a quality support offer to those who come to our sessions using a mix of classroom based activities on both a one-to-one and group-based setting, coupled with high quality online learning to help learners gain qualifications improving their life chances through gaining personal skills, moving to further learning, taking up volunteering opportunities and securing employment. Our employed learners tell us that the skills they learn during their time with us helps them progress in their job role. With flexibility in mind Communicators hosts a virtual learning platform providing e-learning to those individuals who want to study from home or their workplace. The Company was set up by our Managing Director Isobel Currie in 1999, and the following year we secured a contract for supported online learning with Ufi/learndirect. Initially set up to accommodate ICT training needs for companies across the North East, we rapidly widened the scope and range of our programmes to include NVQs in Management, Advice and Guidance, Administration, Customer Service, and Cleaning,; at the same time we introduced accredited programmes in Maths, English, Work Skills, Personal and Social Skills and Customer Service. Over the last 18 months we have further expanded the offer to include CSCS (for construction) and a suite of Community Learning Programmes called ‘My Future Matters’ which have been devised to support those who are furthest away from employment to find appropriate and sustainable work. Isobel maintained a continuous relationship with learndirect up until July 2017, becoming one of the longest serving members of the then network and securing several major, national quality and performance achievement awards on a regular basis including ‘Learner Support Staff’; Working with Employers’, Moving Learners into Work’ and overall ‘Best Delivery Centre. An enduring theme throughout this time has been the support given to the local community, DWP and Job Centres, various local charities, many, many employers and Her Majesty’s Prison Service in Durham. Since the closure of learndirect, Communicators has gone on to secure new contracts to support the continuation of the service with System Group, Durham County Council and most recently was awarded a Prime Contract with Tees Valley Combined Authority. Isobel believes that the success of Communicators is based on the dedicated team of Tutors and Administrators who are trained to a high standard to support our learning provision. A high proportion started their journey with Communicators as volunteers, some are former learners and all have gone on to become very valued members of a thriving team. Everyone in the Team put our learners at the heart of the operation with the genuine and embedded aim to help every learner achieve their full potential - whether they are employed or unemployed. We believe that by living and breathing our Values, each and everyone of us look to make our Vision a reality. We have successfully retained the Matrix accreditation validating the quality of our Information, Advice and Guidance services since inception. During our recent re-assessment, learners interviewed commented on the willingness of staff to provide encouragement and support tailored to them as individuals. This support was felt to be delivered by approachable, non-judgmental staff who are committed to ensuring learners achieve their goals. The weekly Assessment Days and IAG provided throughout a stay with Communicators ensures they are very clear about their learning pathway and options. There were also numerous examples provided about the difference the support had made to them, particularly helping to overcome mental health problems and lack of confidence and self-esteem. Learners interviewed were very clear about what they could expect from Communicators, and were very complimentary about our company. Many of them shared their own stories of how we had made an impact on their lives, with some saying: ‘I don’t think I would still be around if I hadn’t come to Communicators.’ ‘They really do sit and listen to you’. ‘They spend lots of time getting to know you, it’s a relaxed atmosphere and I don’t want to go home at the end’. ‘You spend a lot of time talking about your goals and aspirations, they are always positive’ ‘They make you aware of the choices and guide you, I was adamant I wanted to do IT but when we sat and talked about Maths and English, I realised it would be easier if I got those qualifications first.’ ‘I can’t believe how far I’ve come in a short period of time.’ ‘I’ve got dyslexia and they have helped me understand what it is and how it affects me, I’m getting lots of support.’ ‘Lots of encouragement, you are accepted for who you are, made to feel straight away part of the group.’ ‘Whenever I’ve not understood or struggled, the tutors have been there to guide me through, without them I wouldn’t have progressed as well.’

Living in Dublin at the time, a work-hard play-hard culture had driven my body and mind to the brink and I regularly experienced panic attacks, depression and became quite unwell with an over-active thyroid – my body had had enough. Deep down even then I knew there was another way but felt stuck in my chosen career at the time. A chance conversation one evening in a pub with a friend opened my eyes to the world of holistic therapies like homeopathy, massage and yoga and a different way of being. I began to consider the prospect of honouring my heartfelt desire to help others. However it wasn’t until I fell pregnant with my first child that I found the courage to try a pregnancy massage and join a yoga class, persuaded by the chance that others would be beginning too. Healing myself came first and is an ongoing journey. Returning to Edinburgh that year I continued pregnancy yoga and massage and I have no doubt that both allowed me to sail through the 9 months inspiring me to go on and train as a bodyworker and leave my career in finance behind. I then spent many years working and learning about bodywork and building a successful niche massage practice supporting expectant and post-natal mums and their families. Some say that the average work-span of a massage therapist is 8 years and that certainly was the case for me. Whilst I was and still am hugely passionate about the benefits of positive touch, my body knew otherwise and it was time for a break from treating bodies in such a hands-on way. This realisation coincided with an opportunity to step back into employment for a while and I spent 3 fantastic years working for Secret Garden Outdoor Nursery founded by Cathy Bache. The chance to step into such a fabulous social enterprise was a true gift and allowed my deep love of Nature, which had been lost along the way, to resurface. I had the privilege to take part in a deep nature connection program called Art of Mentoring in 2014 and went on to train as a Forest Schools Practitioner and support young children in their free explorations of natural world. At that time, along with Nature, yoga was the biggest source of support in my life, emotionally, mentally and physically. I returned time and time again to the refuge of my mat to ease the physical and emotional stresses of parenting and life. In 2013, I had the privilege of doing my Foundation Yoga Training with Marc Woolford of Acquaviva Yoga. This year of training based around Marc’s interpretation of the teachings of Vanda Scaravelli really laid the foundations of my daily yoga practice and greatly influenced the style of my teaching today which is gentle yet deep, somatic and very mindful. In 2015 the conditions finally felt right for me to progress onto a full Teacher Training Diploma with Yoga Scotland, one of the most thorough and diverse qualifications in the UK. The loss of a dear friend that year and the deep grieving that unleashed became a transformational stage for me and gave me the push that I needed to step up and allow the Yoga teachings that had supported me so much over the years to be passed on to others. I completed the 2 year (500 hour) course in June 2017 and I'm now living and breathing Yoga and bringing my blend of the teachings out into my local community.
